(Percy Cerutty Classic Revivals): 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Thank goodness it's back! Now ordinary mortals can afford this book again.By BoydI'm delighted to see this book back in print, as I've been unable for years to find an affordable copy. Though it is intended for the mature man, it inspired me considerably when I was a teen, and I have found it encouraging to read again now that I'm past fifty and still keeping the fitness faith. Some of it is out of date, and Cerutty (like the rest of us) is not always right, but let's not insist on perfection. On the whole he is way ahead of his time, and this is a valuable book. One caveat: Cerutty sometimes is less knowledgeable about punctuation and capitalization than he is about physical training, and it can be a little jarring. He has a tendency, when seeking a bit of extra emphasis, to use punctuation that actually interrupts the flow. There were a good many sentences I had to read more than once because of awkward expression. There were also a good number of printer's errors for a while, especially on one particular chapter. Maybe the publisher has fixed that since I bought my copy in early 2015.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Classic is BackBy R.CavalliBe Fit! Or Be Damned is the perfect choice as the second book by Percy Cerutty to be rereleased. While the first one, Athletics: How To Become A Champion was for those who desired athletic excellence, Be Fit or Be Damned could be best described as a lifestyle book. But don't get me wrong when I use the word lifestyle, this book is not necessarily a kinder, gentler way to fitness and longevity. In customary blunt Cerutty form, he tells readers the whys and how-to's to living a long, healthy, vigorous life. Cerutty declares what very few people in the health, fitness industry do today and that is: being at the top of your game physically can put you in control of your life and able to meet all challenges that come your way. Throw in the fact that he correctly acknowledges that fitter people are happier people. Percy Cerutty is the real deal when it comes to showing the way to fitness and health. His books are as relevant today as when they were written close to 50 years ago.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Lots of good informationBy KooganFirst, this book will never be confused as something written by Hemingway or Dickens. There are many typos and a lot of unusual punctuation. But that's not very important.Next, the book is dated (1967) and there are more than a few statements and conclusions that many doctors and nutritionists might disagree with.But basically it's full of good advice: don't eat junk, get off the couch, and get your ass active. If you abuse your body with poor diet, bad habits, and inactivity, you're going to pay for it. Mostly common sense, but Cerutty pounds that message into you page after page. It's a nice, easy read. This is the long-awaited reprint of the highly-acclaimed book ‘Be Fit! Or Be Damned!’ by Percy Cerutty, world renowned coach to Australia’s greatest athlete, Herb Elliott, whom he trained to win the gold medal in the 1500 metres at the Rome Olympics in 1960 by a margin that has never been equalled. First published in 1967, this book encapsulates Percy Cerutty’s philosophies of living healthily to a ripe old age, being vital and fit and enjoying every minute of being alive. Cerutty outlines his practical ideas for achieving and enjoying a long healthy life. Nicknamed Il Topolino (The Little Mouse) by the Italian press, Thompson’s victory was proclaimed heroic and ‘plucky’ in a quintessentially British way. His preparation had been unconventional to say the least. Thompson, who was an insurance clerk, had collapsed in the heat at the Melbourne Games in 1956 and in order to prepare himself for the humidity of Rome he created a steam-room effect in his bathroom using kettles and heaters, and walking up and down continuously on the bathmat. 1 His feat though was set against the growing rivalry in international sport between America and the USSR where greater resources in terms of coaching and sports science were being dedicated to the preparation of their athletes for the Olympic arena. By contrast, Thompson’s preparation refl ected British sport’s amateur tradition. This chapter charts the evolution of athletes’ training methods since the early nineteenth century.

Elliott's coach was the eccentric, irascible PERCY CERUTTY, and over the six years that Cerutty trained Elliott, from 1956 to 1962, Elliott was the undefeated champion of both the 1500 metres and the mile running events. Postal worker turned athletics guru, Cerutty revolutionised running training in Australia - most famously by making his athletes run up and down sand dunes. Cerutty was also a health-food nut, he developed a philosophy he called "stotanism", and he was notoriously outspoken. Cerutty's most famous protege, Herb Elliott, remembers his controversial, charismatic coach. Amanda Smith: The coach behind Herb Elliott's athletic success, Percy Cerutty, was born in 1895. He died in August 1975, almost 25 years ago. In his day, Cerutty revolutionised running training in Australia, most famously by making his athletes run up and down the sand dunes at Portsea, on the Victorian coast. Cerutty was also a health food nut; he developed a philosophy around running which he called 'Stotanism', and he was notoriously outspoken. But for all his idiosyncrasies, Percy Cerutty was a very successful coach, and Herb Elliott his great protégé.   • Percy Cerutty Biography
    Percy Wells Cerutty (1895-1975), athletics coach, was born on 10 January 1895 at Prahran, Melbourne, seventh child of Harry Richard Cerutty, accountant, and his wife Emily, née Neilson, both Victorian born. When Percy was 4, Emily left her alcoholic husband and struggled alone to bring up her six surviving children. Percy left state school at the age of 12 to take a job in a hardware store. In 1910 he joined the Postmaster-General's Department as a messenger, later becoming an assistant, a mechanic and finally a technician. A frail youth who was declared unfit for military service, Cerutty competed for Malvern Harriers until 1918, but had an undistinguished athletic career: he suffered migraines and was often violently ill after races. On 7 November 1921 he married Dorothy Clara Barwell at the East Malvern Baptist Church. In 1939 Cerutty suffered a nervous breakdown which obliged him to take six months leave from the P.M.G. It became a period of self-examination, during which he walked, read philosophy, psychology and poetry, wrote the first of some two hundred poems, joined a weightlifting club and resolved to resume running. Contemptuous of doctors, he decided to take charge of his own health, and applied himself to alternative medicine and natural diets, boasting that he had 'completely rebuilt' his body. Weightlifting added ten lb. (4.5 kg) to a wiry, eight-stone (51 kg) physique. From 1942, in his second athletic career, Cerutty applied himself to the problems of conditioning the body for intensive running. Competing once more for Malvern Harriers, he had over one hundred races.

    Vale Don Keane: 1930-2016 1952 Olympic Games Helsinki 10,000m 10th 47.37 1956 Olympic Games Melbourne 20 km 6th 93.52 Don Keane was born on November 12, 1930, in Perth, W.A. His love of sport began in 1944 as a 13 year old at St Patrick’s in Geralton. His first coach noted that he had a talent for middle distance running and encouraged him to pursue the sport. In 1947, he decided that walking was his preferred sport after watching the National Track and Field titles in Perth. He had no idea that racewalking had rules and he was disqualified in his first two starts. Within a year, he was able to match it with the best walkers in the land. He opened the 1948 season with a half mile walk win in B grade in Perth. His time of 3:33 was 40 secs faster than the winning A grade time that day. At his next start, he was clocked over the mile at 7:32 – a State Junior record. Then he took the State Open record with 7:22.8. Then a few days later, he set a new Australian Junior record of 6:49.2, bettering Queenslander Tom Daintry’s record by 12.3 secs. He was a great all round athlete as a junior, not only winning the walks but regularly featuring in the sprints, middle distance, field events and hurdles. He also won the State Junior 5 miles cross-country title. It is fair to say that if he had chosen another athletic discipline other than racewalking, he would probably have made it to the top anyway.

For coaches, learning from experience is vital in a role that is a complex, dynamic and multifaceted process of balancing fun and winning where one cannot be sure if results will go according to plan. At the Olympic level, due to commercialization more money is being spent than ever before on developing more professional and effective training systems to maximize athletic performances. Medals won determine how a coach is evaluated and with more nations competition at a higher level, success is becoming even more competitive. More qualified and adaptable coaches are required to cope with the demands of international competition. The literature has been extensively examined based on the research question: to what extent is coaching success predicted by a coaches’ ability to self-reflect on past experiences? The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that if coaches who are highly self- reflective and have successful athletic and coaching experiences would be more likely to have future coaching success than those who either were not self-reflective or had less success in the past.
