Division of Knowledge………………………………………………………………….149 Abstract Dancing in the Shadows of the Outer Limits: An Exploration of Experiences of Female Pornography Performers and Feminist Discourse on Their Experiences By Caroline West This research project will examine the subjective realities experienced by female pornography performers, working in the American mainstream pornography industry. The aim of this research is to situate these lived experiences within the international feminist debate on pornography. This research will use the narratives of the participants, as owners of their experiences, as a tool to assess the opposing feminist perspectives and theories addressing the presence and role of female performers in the work they do. Feminism has long held a debate with pornography, from Andrea Dworkin (1981) to sex- positive third and fourth-wave feminism, featuring theorists such as Gayle Rubin (2011), Laura Kipnis (1999), and Nadine Strossen (2000). As we move further into the 21st century pornography has undergone significant metamorphosis. In conjunction, feminism has also undergone significant changes since the time of Dworkin's campaigns against pornography, and now, with the advent of social media, a greater number of perspectives are being heard. One perspective that is sorely lacking is a coherent collection of the voices of the actresses themselves; a gap that has implications for ethical discourse and research on pornography. Interviews with female performers will be analysed utilising a Foucauldian Discourse Analysis framework. Acknowledging a paucity of studies that focus on performer experiences, this research will build on established work such as James D. Griffin et al., (2012) to construct a more accurate analysis of the experiences of working in pornography. Many assumptions exist about pornography; such as claims that the women are coerced or abused (Levy, 2005).These claims need to be explored with the perspectives of the women included, and this research will explore these alongside experiences of stigma and violence.

Throughout the media saga that followed her outing, Weeks defended her decision to act in pornography, arguing that it was a feminist affirmation of her sexual agency. However, Weeks’s defense of her pornography career is not monolithic, but rather, takes two distinct forms. The first form is characterized by structural or intersectional rhetoric, focused on the contextual factors that implicate the meaning of both pornography and feminism. Contrasting this rhetorical pattern is another that emerged in Weeks’s defense of pornography, characterized by neoliberalism. This rhetoric focused on the affirmation of individualism. Weeks’s neoliberal rhetoric constructed pornography as an openly- accessible option to solve economic shortcomings, regardless of the individual’s social location. Specifically, it explores how performers navigate a field typified by contingent, stigmatized work at the intersection of culture, health, gender, sexuality. Drawing on qualitative interviews with stakeholders in the California adult film industry, as well as an original quantitative dataset detailing the performance histories of adult performers, I develop three substantive chapters exploring different aspects of the adult film industry and how they advance theoretical areas in sociology. Chapter Two of the dissertation uses a unique quantitative dataset I constructed by scraping the performance histories and demographic information of over 140,000 adult film performers and directors and their roles in over ii 180,000 adult films, allowing me to examine differences in career length and trajectory between performers by sexuality and gender.

Smith Introductions: pornography, feminisms, and ongoing debate Though first-wave feminists had engaged in debate and advocacy surrounding sexual knowledge and obscenity since the late-19th century (Horowitz, 2003), American advocates did not begin to address pornography as a feminist concern until the 1970s, ostensibly beginning with the formation of the activist group Women Against Violence in Pornography and Media (WAVPM) in 1978. WAVPM was a reactionary response to the mainstreaming of hardcore pornography in the wake of American sexual liberation, which many second wave feminists claimed “…encouraged rape and other acts of violence, threatening women’s safety and establishing a climate of terror that silenced women and perpetuated their oppression… [thus helping] create and maintain women’s subordinate status” (Bronstein, 2011, pp. 178–179). The resulting “porn wars” (or, more broadly, “sex wars”) of the 1980s and 1990s polarized second- and third-wave feminists into two camps: (1) anti-porn feminists, such as writer Andrea Dworkin (1981) and legal scholar Catharine MacKinnon (1984), who opposed the creation and distribution of pornographic images and videos on moral and political grounds; and (2) pro-porn or sex-positive feminists, such as anthropologist Gayle Rubin and feminist pornographer Candida Royalle, who advocated for freedom of sexual expression and representation.     SEXING THE MUELLER REPORT Ruthann Robson* I. INTRODUCTION Sexual indiscretion, misconduct, and deceit percolate throughout the extensive 2019 Report On The Investigation Into Russian Interference In the 2016 Presidential Election—known as the Mueller Report.1 President Trump’s sexual behaviors are certainly not the focus of the Mueller Report, which resulted from the Acting Attorney General’s appointment of Robert S. Mueller, III as Special Counsel for the United States Department of Justice to investigate “any links and/or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with the campaign of President Donald Trump,” and “any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation.”2 Volume I of the Mueller Report addresses Russian interference with the 2016 election and any Trump campaign links in approximately 200 pages. Volume II of the Mueller Report, which is slightly longer at 241 pages, focuses on the question of whether the president obstructed justice in connection with the Russia-related investigations, including presidential actions related to the Special Counsel’s investigation itself. Caswell, Chair This master’s thesis explores the stability and ramifications of two emergent categories of pornography: namely, feminist pornography and queer pornography. Though these terms— feminist and queer—have histories that connote resistance and disruption, they have been controlled and institutionalized in pornography to create a broader visibility and a deeper impact. These terms are analyzed in relation to two institutions that seek to control their meanings—the Feminist Porn Awards (FPAs) and PinkLabel.tv—and fourteen pornography studios that identify with either or both labels. I collected data from preexisting documents by implementing a content analysis. Two crucial findings suggest that 1) despite the foundational tenets of feminist and queer porn, as outlined by the FPAs and PinkLabel.tv, the studios did not always abide by them, and 2) strategic essentialism is a mode of temporarily fixing these categories to wield power in resistance to the naturalized mainstream power.
