Let us be thankful for our country, our state and our safe and welcoming community with its hard working citizens. We are grateful for the many new families in Itasca and for the improvements that are continuing to be made in

On behalf of the Trustees and employees of Itasca ISD it is my privilege to wish everyone a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving. I hope that you will take time to reflect on and be thankful for the many blessings in your lives. May the Lord continue to bless and keep us.

Psalm of Thanksgiving God Bless America Psalms 100 Irving Berlin, 1918; revised 1938 Spoken Introduction While the storm clouds gather far across the sea, Let us swear allegiance to a land that’s free, Let us all be grateful for a land so fair, As we raise our voices I a solemn prayer, Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all you lands! Serve the LORD with gladness; God bless America, land that I love Come before His Presence with singing. Stand beside her and guide her Know that the LORD, He is God; Through the night with the light from above It is He who has made us, and not we Ourselves From the mountains to the prairies, We are His people and the sheep of His Pasture.

Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name. The Paw Print Press Wishes

The First Thanksgiving...From the Turkey’s Side By Dr. Gobbler (reprinted from 2002) Dr. Gobbler is a domestic turkey from Hewitt, Texas who is mascot for Dr. Gobbler’s compost. Much has been recorded about the first Thanksgiving near Plymouth Rock. How the Pilgrims partied with roasted corn, deer meat, and assorted nuts (some weird neighbors sneaked in). Much is true. Some is fabricated. So I will tell you what my feathered ancestors told me and make up the rest. 1. A hunk of history: 1620 brought a wretched winter. Brutal cold, icy roads, bad TV (mostly reruns, including the ghastly sitcom “Mayflower Momma”). 1621 fared much better. Corn grew high as an elephant’s eye. (Somebody wrote a song about it.) Sadly, it in- jured the elephant, who quit plowing, went south, and joined a circus act. On December 13 Governor William Bradford said a day should be set aside to feast. So men gathered fish and vegetables. Women cooked corn bread and prepared succotash. (What’s succotash? It’s tash you suck through a straw.) Then a colonist said, “How about Wild Turkey?” Another said, “Yeah, I could drink a whole bottle.” And the first colonist said, “No, silly Pilgrim. I mean the bird.” So they dispatched several hunters armed with bows and arrows, slingshots, and a single primitive machine gun. Facts about great-grandpa The settlers knew my ancestors as formidable opponents, a source of colorful clothing, and tasty treats around the campfire. Wild turkeys boasted beautiful plumage, weighed about 20 pounds, and could cleverly evade their stalkers. Page 9 November 13, 2015 Paw Print Press

1st Thanksgiving

Continued from page 8 Know why? Because turkeys see much better than people, and sig- naled each other when danger approached. Also, these birds could run fast, and fly up to 55mph. In fact, that’s how settlers caught them. The tricky settlers sneaked out to forest trails, posted 30 mph speed limit signs, and then hid to wait for birds. When turkeys flew by, hunters turned on a siren, and waved them over to issue “speeding tickets.” The law-abiding birds stopped mid-flight, which made no aerody- namic sense, then fell straight down into the Pilgrims’ trap. (A few es- caped, and scrawled the bird-witnessed account you’re reading now.) Finally: Soon many turkeys roasted over the settlers’ spit...which was a gross way to moisten turkey, but they didn’t have margarine. Many generations of gobblers have flown through history since that first celebration. Today, you humans eat domestic turkeys who live a pampered life, then put protein on your table. But Dr. G will never forget his wild ancestors, and the role they played in nourishing our forefathers and our foremothers too. Each year, we honor the turkey with a Thanksgiving Day parade. One day, you might even see Dr. Gobbler himself atop a float. But that’s in the future. The Thanksgiving that counts most is not the first one, or some future one, but this one. It’s all about family, about sharing food, and football, and friendship. I hope you have a great day. But if you see me before the big event, don’t tell anybody. I keep a low profile until December.
