Andrew Brown discovered his passion for running through a family tragedy. His son, Jake, was set for a career as a professional rugby player when he suffered a severe back injury in 2008. Jack Bretherick, Joe Durkin and Peter Hill. Andrew, 42, an assistant manager at Travis Perkins builders‟ merchants in Batley, said: "He had to give it up completely. It was terrible. That inspired me to run for charity and I became addicted to it." Andrew, of Thornhill Edge, Dewsbury, ran the London Marathon last year in aid of Back Care. This year he hopes to beat his record and come in at under three-and-a-half hours. Now he runs 10K races regularly, with his time hovering just over the 40-minute mark. He said: "I completed the Dewsbury 10K in 40 minutes 21 seconds, which is one minute six off my last time. I'm trying to break the 40-minute barrier, which is why I've joined Dewsbury Road Runners." Andrea Woodside in the Liversedge ½ Andrew and family were raising money for the deaf and blind charity Sense at the event on Sunday, wearing distinctive orange wigs. Andrew added: "It was a good event and was well attended. We raised £80 on the day and money is still coming in." To help raise the £1,400 needed for the marathon, Andrew has drummed up some enticing offers. Head coach at Dewsbury Rams, Warren Jowitt, has agreed to donate a signed shirt and season ticket. They will be fundraising at the Dewsbury Rams and Leigh Centurions game in Dewsbury on February 21. Page | 1 LIBERAL/LIBERAL DEMOCRAT CANDIDATES IN THE YORKSHIRE AND HUMBERSIDE REGION 1945-2015 Constituencies in the county of Yorkshire (excluding Cleveland and Teesside) INCLUDING SDP CANDIDATES in the GENERAL ELECTIONS of 1983 and 1987 PREFACE A number of difficulties have been encountered in compiling this Index which have not been resolved in an entirely satisfactory manner. Local government boundary changes in the early 1970s led to the creation of the Cleveland and HuMberside Counties. Cleveland and adjacent constituencies have been included in the Index for the North East Region. HuMberside constituencies coMMencing with the General Election of February 1974 are included in the Yorkshire Region. The region has been home to an impressive gallery of party personalities, several of whoM receive extended entries. The spirited independence with respect to LPO HQ in London which the Yorkshire Regional Party has often shown, and the relatively strong direction it has exerted over its constituency associations, would account for the formidable challenge maintained in the Region at successive general elections, even in the direst years of party fortunes. Yorkshire appears to have been rather less willing in 1950 to heed to the dictates of the Martell Plan (see article below) than other regions. Even so, until the 1970s there were several Labour-held Mining and industrial constituencies where the Party declined to fight. InforMation on Many candidates reMains sparse. SDP candidates particularly, over 1983-87, seem to have been an anonyMous battalion indeed, few if any of them leaving a Mark on any field of huMan endeavour. 1 Page | 2 THE MARTELL PLAN The Martell Plan, mentioned in passing throughout the regional directories was the electoral strategy adopted by the Liberal Party for the General Election of 1950.
