(See our budget message on page 9). EDITORIAL INTERN Now, however, we have substantial and quantifiable information on the pathetic lack Gina Bramucci of money and time allotted to – and within – newsrooms for training and the widespread concern among journalists about the situation. An extensive survey of the news industry has just reported that U.S. journalists cite a lack IRE of training as their No. 1 source of dissatisfaction – more than pay and benefits. IRE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR The survey by the Council of Presidents of National Journalism Organizations, of which Brant Houston IRE is a member, found that news executives acknowledge they should provide more training for their employees, but say time and insufficient budgets are the main reasons they don’t.     BRUSHES WITH HISTORY IMAGINATION AND INNOVATION IN ART EDUCATION HISTORY DATES: NOV 19–22, 2015 RECEPTION: NOV 19, 6-8PM v v v WELCOME TO BRUSHES WITH HISTORY: IMAGINATION AND INNOVATION IN ART EDUCATION HISTORY (BWH) at Teachers College (TC). Our goal is to provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of ideas, issues, information, and research approaches utilized in the historical investigation of art education within local and global contexts. We will offer opportunities to engage with the rich resources in art education history at TC and beyond, explore more sophisticated approaches and methods of historical research, encourage interest in historical research, and extend the conversation on how meaning is produced in historical research trends and representations. This conference comes two decades after the last academic conference on the history of art education held at The Pennsylvania State University in 1995. TC’s legacy of “firsts” begins with the College itself and focuses on renewing this legacy through TC’s Campaign. This is the first history of art education conference taking place in the 127-year history of the College as well as that of the Program in Art & Art Education. The conference title highlights Imagination and Innovation in Art Education History. On the face of it, acts of imagination and innovation have not always been thought synonymous with our perceptions of history. Enshrined in former documents, statutes, and pronouncements of trained experts, the historical records of TC and art education history, cathedral-like, have seemed carved in stone for all time. Yet the carved gargoyles of personal histories excavated from a widening global context and told in vernaculars as old and varied as history itself challenge us with a new and more complex story that is yet in the making, providing a platform to sustain a vibrant culture of innovation and groundbreaking scholarship at TC.

The irregular hours. The phone threats. The fear of libel suits. The indifferent and sometimes timid editors. After more than a dozen years of exposing organized crime and corruption in Phoenix for the Arizona Republic, Bolles was relieved to be finally leaving the beat, moving on to cover the state legislature. That was the anguishing irony of it, his friends and fellow reporters would lament, that someone had murdered him when he was no longer a threat. Some said the 47-year-old journalist should have ignored the news tip that led to his assassination. But even as he sought to distance himself from his craft, Don Bolles and investigative reporting were inseparable. And so, when a man called whom he’d never met, claiming to have incriminating information about an Arizona congressman in bed with the mob, Bolles did what he always did with potential sources. He suggested they get together face-to- face. The caller said his name was John Adamson. The two men made plans to meet in the lobby of the upscale Hotel Clarendon (now the Clarendon Hotel and Spa) in downtown Phoenix. Adamson, however, never showed. After waiting 15 minutes, Bolles returned to his white Datsun 710 compact. As the father of four backed out of his parking space, six sticks of dynamite taped to the car’s frame under his seat 2 detonated.

This is the time of year when this column dedicates space to reminding readers of the silliest, most ignorant and dishonest utterances of the self-anointed glitterati, illuminati and cognoscenti who lecture us, rule us and tell us what we're supposed to know, what we're supposed to believe and how we're expected to live. And this crowd has had an exceptionally bad year. And I'm not even counting the backlash against the Gaystapo who have tried to destroy Phil Robertson of the "Duck Dynasty" television show. In a one week period this fall, the New York Times, The Washington Post and Politico magazine all arrived at the identical conclusion that Obamacare's design was never intended to improve the delivery of health care, as its proponents claimed. What they all discovered was that, after millions of Americans had their insurance policies cancelled and millions more had seen their premiums soar, Obamacare was actually just another Democrat wealth redistribution scheme. They've had five years to figure this out. But they were all so devoted to promoting the man whom Barbara Walters declared "Messiah," that they averted their eyes from the obvious. Rather than report, they competed with each other for the honor of bearing his sedan chair on their shoulders. Those who dared to be correct from the beginning were denounced by the same geniuses who now claim to have uncovered the Obamacare fraud.
