This thesis situates the iconography of painted panels within their historical and cultural context in Spain from the late medieval period to the Age of Exploration. I explain the image’s origins and introduce its various versions, focusing on three major frequently commissioned subtypes: the Sponsorship of the Virgin, plague commissions, and the Mercedarian’s Virgin of Mercy. I present a case study of one famous version of the type, the Virgin of the Navigators, and focus on the Spaniards and Amerindians beneath the cloak, situating them in relation to the historic debate that called into question the very humanity of the peoples of the Americas. Detail of The Virgin of the Navigators .................................................................. 66 ix CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION The Virgin of Mercy is a Marian devotional image type immediately recognizable by its portrayal of Mary protecting the faithful with her cloak.1 To its late medieval viewing audience, any given image was a reassuring picture of protection. For contemporary viewers, these same images visually reference the broad cultural issues feared by the original devotees of her cult. Spanish examples of the Virgin of Mercy are no different. Moreover, by understanding the iconographical references in panel paintings of the type from Spain, the viewer can almost envision the cultural pulse of Spain from the late medieval period to the Age of Exploration. The image has enjoyed a long history of patronage and a diverse range of sheltering figures. While its first appearance was as an ancient sheltering cloak type featuring pagan deities, it was transformed in the late Middle Ages as one of many versions of the Virgin. It was commissioned in the hope of preventing the Black Death, and has been one of the first paintings in European history to reference the exploration of the New World. Beneath the miraculous, healing cloak, groups of mortals have been depicted as varied as royal and ecclesiastical authorities, monks, nuns, townsfolk, children, naked people, the family of the Catholic Monarchs, New World explorers and conquistadores, and natives of the Americas. While the topic of the Virgin of Mercy has been explored in the body of extant scholarship concerning the type, Spanish examples, that is, images commissioned and produced by Spaniards and destined for devotional use within the Iberian Peninsula have 1 This image type is known by several different but related titles that have been used to refer to this and other Marian types: The Virgin of Mercy, The Madonna of Mercy, Our Lady of Mercy, The Virgin of Misericordia, The Madonna of Misericordia, etc. These versions have also been translated into the different European languages. As is well known, the canonical gospels offer only very meager details of Mary's life, and despite the considerable narrative and theo­ logical importance of her infrequent appearances, these bio­ graphies of Jesus reveal frustratingly little about his mother. 1 Paul, for his part, seems to know very little about the mother of the Lord, and other writers of the first and early second cen­ turies seem similarly unconcerned with the events of her life.

    Emma Chookaszian The Image of the Virgin of Mercy in the Armenian Art of 13th century in Comparison with the Western Icons The Origins of This Iconography The western influence on the culture and art was getting stronger in Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia in the 13th c., which had a large sea-shore, oriented towards Europe and was playing an important role in the Mediterranean trade. The influence was strengthening also in the Armenian Church and the Armenian kings were becoming more and more oriented towards Roman Church. The majority of the Armenian manuscript books from the end of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th c. reveal a specific so-called “Italo-Byzantine” style. This text comments on two full-page miniatures from these manuscripts representing the Virgin of Mercy with the members of the royal families kneeling in front of her. One depicts Marshal Oshin, his two elder sons, Constatin and Hethoum, kneeling before Madonna, and a bishop. Madonna is holding her cloak over the royal family’s members as a sign of patronage and protection. Great Armenian scholar Sirarpie Der Nersessian drew attention to the intriguing similarities between this Armenian miniature and a small painting by Duccio di Boninsegna. Duccio’s work, Madonna of the Franciscans is datee in 1280 while the Armenian miniature dates in 1274. Der Nersessian believed that the Franciscans introduced to a Cilician artist the compositional type (Madonna della Misericordia/ Virgin of Mercy) which later enjoyed great success in the West. Another miniature from the same period (ca. 1270) also represents Virgin of Mercy and belongs to the Prince Vasak Gospel which is now kept in Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem.

A review of critical works revealed the use of an architectural setting and metaphor in classical Greek literature that continued in Roman and medieval literature. Related examples were the Palace of Venus, the House of Fortune, and the temple or castle of the Virgin. The study then explained the devotion to the Virgin Mother in the middle ages and renaissance. The study showed that two doctrines, the Immaculate Conception and the Assumption of Mary, were illustrated in art, literature, and drama, show­ ing Mary as an active interceding figure. In civic pageantry from 1377 to 1556, the study found that the architectural metaphor and setting was symbolic of a heaven or structure which housed virgins personifying virtues, symbolically protective of royal genealogy. Pro­ tection of the royal line was associated with Mary, because she was a link in the royal line from David and Solomon to Jesus. As architecture was symbolic in civic pageantry of a protective place for the royal line, so architecture in religious drama was symbolic of, or associated with the Virgin Mother.

It explores the complex manner in which these central Italian cities both emulated and rejected the political and cultural hegemony of Rome through the ideological and performative reinvention of its cult icons. In the twelfth century the powerful urban center of Tivoli adopted Rome’s grandest annual public event, the nocturnal Assumption procession of August 14-15, and transformed it into a potent civic expression that incorporated all sectors of the social fabric. Tivoli’s cult of the Trittico del Salvatore and the Inchinata procession in which the icon of the enthroned Christ was carried at the feast of the Assumption and made to perform in symbolic liturgical ceremonies were both modeled on Roman, papal exemplars.

I had learnt the night prayer to Jesus, Mary and Joseph for assistance ‘in my last agony’ when at school aged eight. In later life I had developed the habit of asking St Joseph’s help with practical matters such as problems with the car or computer. It was a reference to St Joseph during an Advent retreat in December 2016 that prompted me to explore his life and mission in more detail. The retreat master mentioned two things about St Joseph which intrigued me: within the Holy Family Joseph held ‘a primacy of authority’ while Mary held ‘a primacy of love’1 and secondly that a recent mystic had experienced inner locutions from St Joseph indicating that he had been sanctified in the womb. A search of the Internet on Sister Ephrem Neuzil confirmed that St Joseph had reportedly said to her that he had been freed from original sin soon after his conception.

    BATES, JAMES M., D.M.A. Music in Honor of the Virgin Mary during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. (2010) Directed by Dr. Welborn Young. 50 pp. Veneration of the Virgin Mary was one of the most important aspects of Christianity during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and sacred music of the time incorporated many Marian concepts. The Virgin Mary was considered the greatest intercessor with God and Christ at a time when fear of Purgatory was strong. Prayers and devotions seeking her aid were among the most significant aspects of spiritual life, and texts of this kind were set to music for devotional use. Beyond her identity as intercessor, there were many additional conceptions of her, and these also found musical expression. The purpose of this study was, first, to explore the basic elements of Marian devotion, and, second, to examine how veneration of Mary was expressed musically. Seven musical compositions from c. 1200-1600 are examined as representative examples. The ―Marian aspects‖ of some compositions may be as straightforward as the use of texts that address Mary, or they may be found in musical and textual symbolism. Of special interest is a particular genre of motet used in private devotions. Precise and detailed information about how sacred music was used in the Middle Ages and Renaissance is scarce, but evidence related to this particular kind of devotional motet helps bring together a number of elements related to Marian meditative practices and the kind of physical settings in which these took place, allowing a greater understanding of the overall performance context of such music.

This scene of lamentation is an apocryphal story, yet it incorporates signifi- cant details from the biblical accounts of the women who were present at the crucifixion and burial of Jesus. The Gospel of John says that three Marys—Jesus’ mother; his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas; and Mary Magdalene—stood near the cross (John 19:25). The Synoptic Gospels report that many women who followed Jesus from Galilee observed his crucifixion “from a distance” (Matthew 27:55; Mark 15:40-41; and Luke 23:48). Mark adds that “among them were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome” (Mark 15:40b), while Matthew specifically identifies “Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee” as present (Matthew 27:56).

Because of this, the Virgin Mary is usually portrayed in iconography as holding her young Son. The message proclaimed by the icon is that God has come in the flesh, and here is proof: His mother holding her Son. This study seeks to introduce aspects of the life of the Virgin Mary that are not very commonly known from an historical viewpoint. The significance of some of the events in the life of the Virgin Mary including her place among the saints in glory is covered quite well in The Life of the Virgin Mary by the Holy Apostles Convent, which is recommended for further reading. One can divide up the life of the Virgin Mary into four parts, each of which produced major changes in her life.
