Shoemaker: The Virgin Mary's Hidden Past THE Vm.GIN MAR.v's HIDDEN PAST From Ancient Marian Apocrypha to the Medieval Vitae Virginis Stephen J Shoemaker, PhD* In light of the enormous significance that the Virgin Mary would come to assume in later Christian piety, the rather leisurely pace with which the early Christians developed mem ories of her life is perhaps somewhat surprising. As is well known, the canonical gospels offer only very meager details of Mary's life, and despite the considerable narrative and theo logical importance of her infrequent appearances, these bio graphies of Jesus reveal frustratingly little about his mother. 1 Paul, for his part, seems to know very little about the mother of the Lord, and other writers of the first and early second cen turies seem similarly unconcerned with the events of her life. -

1 The Annunciation: symbolic functions of space in Renaissance depictions of the Annunciation In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, ‘Greetings, favoured one! The Lord is with you.’ But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus’ (Luke 1.26-31). The Annunciation is, together with the Crucifixion and the Resurrection, the most commonly depicted Biblical event of the Renaissance. Of these three events the Annunciation is interesting in terms of the space it depicts. The fundamental message of Christianity is the meeting of the divine and the human in the figure of Christ, the God-man. This meeting is prefigured by the Annunciation, where the divine (Gabriel) and the human (Mary) come together in a shared space. The Annunciation contains the Christian message within it like a seed, as indeed it is. To be born of flesh entails that Christ must suffer and eventually die; therefore this moment contains within it all that Christ means in terms of man’s redemption. The Annunciation provides the opportunity for the religious artist to investigate these ideas through the structural workings of the confinements of Mary’s dwelling. -

I had learnt the night prayer to Jesus, Mary and Joseph for assistance ‘in my last agony’ when at school aged eight. In later life I had developed the habit of asking St Joseph’s help with practical matters such as problems with the car or computer. It was a reference to St Joseph during an Advent retreat in December 2016 that prompted me to explore his life and mission in more detail. The retreat master mentioned two things about St Joseph which intrigued me: within the Holy Family Joseph held ‘a primacy of authority’ while Mary held ‘a primacy of love’1 and secondly that a recent mystic had experienced inner locutions from St Joseph indicating that he had been sanctified in the womb. A search of the Internet on Sister Ephrem Neuzil confirmed that St Joseph had reportedly said to her that he had been freed from original sin soon after his conception. -

BATES, JAMES M., D.M.A. Music in Honor of the Virgin Mary during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. (2010) Directed by Dr. Welborn Young. 50 pp. Veneration of the Virgin Mary was one of the most important aspects of Christianity during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and sacred music of the time incorporated many Marian concepts. The Virgin Mary was considered the greatest intercessor with God and Christ at a time when fear of Purgatory was strong. Prayers and devotions seeking her aid were among the most significant aspects of spiritual life, and texts of this kind were set to music for devotional use. Beyond her identity as intercessor, there were many additional conceptions of her, and these also found musical expression. The purpose of this study was, first, to explore the basic elements of Marian devotion, and, second, to examine how veneration of Mary was expressed musically. Seven musical compositions from c. 1200-1600 are examined as representative examples. The ―Marian aspects‖ of some compositions may be as straightforward as the use of texts that address Mary, or they may be found in musical and textual symbolism. Of special interest is a particular genre of motet used in private devotions. Precise and detailed information about how sacred music was used in the Middle Ages and Renaissance is scarce, but evidence related to this particular kind of devotional motet helps bring together a number of elements related to Marian meditative practices and the kind of physical settings in which these took place, allowing a greater understanding of the overall performance context of such music. -

I explain the image’s origins and introduce its various versions, focusing on three major frequently commissioned subtypes: the Sponsorship of the Virgin, plague commissions, and the Mercedarian’s Virgin of Mercy. -

Then as subjective expression gradually replaced objective imitation, El Greco was rediscovered as the forefather of modern painting. With so many paternal ancestors already claimed, let us not fall into the error of putting still another father of modern art in the roots of the family tree. *This lecture was illustrated by lantern slides. The Easter Verses of the Three Marys A medieval short play for Eastertide This short drama is one of the oldest and most important pieces of drama in Europe. The written version dates from the 12th Century and is recorded in a manuscript kept at Vic in Spain. The drama is an enhanced version of the encounter between Mary and the Angel at the tomb on Easter morning recorded in the gospels. This play has been performed at Eastertime for centuries and is still has great power today. By tradition, the three Marys who buy ointment and go to the tomb to anoint the body of Jesus: Mary Magdalene, Mary Jacobe (the mother of James) and Mary Salome. In this version, I imagine Mary Jacobe as the motherly, practical type; Mary Salome as younger, elegant, wanting the best; and Mary Magdalene as overwhelmed by grief and finding it almost impossible to go to the tomb but impelled to do so. In Spanish versions of the drama, Mary Magdalene carries a jar of expensive ointment, Mary Jacobe carries a broom, and Mary Salome carried an incense burner (small thurible). The merchant is an East End barrowboy, probably minding the stall while his master is away, wheeling and dealing to get a good price but also sensitive to the women’s grief. The angel is strong, straightforward, unshowy, his declaration that Christ is risen convinces and draws us in. The repeated refrain ‘How great is our grief’ needs to be carefully handled so it doesn’t become melodramatic. It needs to be heartfelt and spoken differently each time it occurs. -

Clarke, PhD The beauty of the Virgin-Mother gives spiritual life to her children. In that regard, this article will explore the writings of some of the Church Fathers, the Marian psalter attributed to St. Bonaventure, and the theology-of-the-body audiences of Pope St. John Paul II to show how Mary is mother of the spiritual life and the exemplar of the life of the elect.
