Our Treasurer, Martin Wilkinson, has outlined how subscriptions are allocated and he is to be commended for his efforts to keep these at a minimum. The report on the Annual General Meeting assures members that the financial position is such that subscriptions remain unchanged for the coming year. The fantastic achievement of Dave Phillips, at the age of 78, in completing 500 marathons, as well as raising £125,000 for charity, is amazing and we send him our hearty congratulations. The track season is upon us and we look forward to some exceptional performances at our Championships on 9 June and at other events throughout the summer. ======ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

3 MMA 261 May/June 2019 Where do my subs go? Continued Our last subscription increase was 6 years ago, in 2013. Despite pressures on the funds we have maintained a healthy bank balance often with a small profit at the end of the year. We are probably the least expensive (and the most frugal) masters athletic club in the UK largely as a result of being “virtual”.

Many years ago, before I became treasurer, the club was bequeathed a large donation that has allowed us to underpin the risk on a number of high profile events. We make a small loss on smaller events and, depending on numbers or enter, usually make a profit on the larger events. We are keen not to increase competition fees as far as possible and have managed to support more athletes competing in England and MMAC vests.

The largest part of your subscription, about a third, goes to our national body, the British Masters Athletic Federation which coordinates the online subscription and competition entries process via their website. The good news is the BMAF has agreed to reduce the members affiliation fee this year. This will allow us to retain membership subscriptions at current levels for even longer. Affiliation to England Athletics and England Athletic Masters Association (EAMA) accounts for another 14% of the subscription. A large portion of the subscription then go to support competitions, medals and awards, officials costs at events, track and field league and subsidizing MMAC members in a number of events. MMAC running costs, including stationary, postage, committee expenses are just 7%. The newsletter costs on average 6% but this will be much less percentage for those who get the online version and much more for those who pay the additional subscription for the postal version. So, in summary your £15 subscription is roughly divided between  £7 to BMAF, England Athletics and EAMA.  £6 to support events and MMAC members in competition  £1 for running MMAC  £1 for the online newsletter Bottom line is we remain a healthy club despite our modest subscription costs. Well done to all our members, officials, volunteers and committee members. I’m pleased to report that there is no plan to increase subscriptions for at least another year.

Martin Wilkinson MMAC Treasurer ======Elaine Mee has written that she is moving in the autumn to the Isle of Wight and so we will need a team manager to take her place. She is preparing a team for the inter-area match o 6 July. Thanks for all her excellent work over the years.

Rolinston parkrun report

Peter Wright, Tracy Hinxman, Mick Edwards and Sue Kneill-Boxley Martin says I've been framed

Midlands Masters started its foray into Parkrun tourism, with the Rosliston parkrun in April just before the AGM. Local MMAC runners Tracey Hinxman and Pete Wright were already the W40 and M55 age record holders and they took first male and female. They had a close battle with Pete finishing 7th and Tracey 8th on the day. Although a new member since then Jason Tilley was 4th on his return to his old stamping ground. In the battle of the committee, Mick Smedley was taking part in his first parkrun ever and his first race since injury several years ago and he showed he still can give the youngsters a run with a fine 19th in 22.13 for a M70 age group record. Meanwhile Graham Lamb and Sue Kneill-Boxley were having a close battle but just as Sue got ahead she suffered an injury and had to drop out Just behind was Martin Wilkinson. Next to finish and not surprisingly taking the V70 age group record was Angela Copson in 23.48, with the 2nd highest age group rating at the event. Great to see Angela coming to the event and staying for the AGM. Adrian Lloyd was next in followed by Anthony Edwards. It was a nice way to prepare for the AGM and if anyone want to visit Rosliston it is a nice course at a forestry centre. As we are putting this news letter together we are about to have the next tourism event at Walsall Parkrun on the 25th May. Then we go to Sandwell on 29th June and to Perry Barr on 13th July. We will see how this is going after Sandwell and see if we will then want other venues. Just a reminder the entries for Jesolo for the European Track and Field Championships close on 31st July. Hoping for a big contingent of MMAC members out there.

5 MMA 261 May/June 2019 Our programme of road championships is at its peak over the next six weeks and although no-one is expected to do all the events, we do not wish you to miss out on your usual events or any that you are tempted to enter for the first time, because of forgetting the closing dates. Here then is a reminder of the key events during May and June: Sun 30 June: 30 km Trail Champs. Gravesend. Entries close midnight Sun 16 June We hope the numbers for the 1 mile road championships starting on the Mall and finishing in front of Buckingham Palace will be sufficient to hold separate men's and women's races - this is in your hands! The 10 mile and 5 km championships are part of the Dorking 10 and the Horwich Festival of Racing re- spectively, which makes them into a fantastic experience overall, as well as enjoying the races them- selves. Think about forming a team from your club (masters of all ages accepted) - see entry page for details. We have extended our closing date for the 10 mile championships so that you still have time after receiving this message to fit the race into your plans for 02 June..Sun 30 June: 30 km Trail Champs. Gravesend. Entries close midnight Sun 16 June. Walter Hill

MARATHON CHALLENGE……. Midland Master athlete, Dave Phillips, (M75) completed his 500th marathon on 26 April 2019 having taken part in the Stratford Marathon – a total of more than 13,000 miles in 1982 he set himself the challenge to run 500 marathons in aid of the Brain & Spine Foundation after reading a newspaper appeal calling for supporters and he has not stopped since. He usually runs both the London and Stratford marathons, but as they both fall on the same day this year he opted to call time at his home town event – one of his favourites, having missed only two in the marathon’s 38 year history. He even ran it when it was cancelled due to bad weather, saying he came ‘first and last’ on the leaderboard. Stratford this year will mark the end of an era for the chartered accountant – who still continues to work full time at his Kenilworth based company Phillips & Becker. To celebrate the milestone run he will be joined on the course by friends and his 35 year old daughter Anna. “Afterwards we’ll be having a big party especially because we’ll be celebrating reaching £125,000 raised for the Brain & Spine Foundation. I want to support this amazing charity and the work they do for people suffering from neurological and conditions, brain tumours and associated conditions. They are only a small foundation and need all the help possible to carry out their goals.” The charity says his support has made a huge impact on their work. Chief executive, Marc Smith said :David is a phenomenal man – to run 500 marathons is staggering, but to do so and raise £125,000 in order to help people affected by neurological conditions, that is seriously impressive. We are very grateful to have David as part of our charity family. David’s long relationship with running marathons began in 1982 when he made a bet to run the first ever Coventry marathon. Five years later he signed up to the Massey Ferguson running club, which he previously captained and of which he is still a member. Since then running has taken him all over the world, from the pyramids of Egypt to the skyscrapers of New York, but his favourite is nearer home – Snowdon in Wales , which he has run 32 times. His fund raising has led him to be invited to a Queen’s Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. He now plans to call time on his marathons ,He said “This may well be my last marathon as it has been a non-stop effort since my first in Coventry in 1982, it just became a necessity for me. Since then I’ve done more than 300 half-marathons too. Running is great, you meet wonderful people and there’s no competition like in other sports. I would like to carry on doing short runs but the marathons are taking me twice as long now as they used to. You never know, maybe people won’t have heard the last of me yet”

Thanks to Stratford ‘Observer

Presidents Trophy 2018-19 award goes to Dominic Bradley

Dominic Bradley receives this years presidents award, Dominic won the M40 100m in a new championship best time of 11.11 at the Midland Masters track and field championships and also won the 200m P9 MMA 261 May/June 2019 European Mountain Running Championships - 2019 Janske Lazne (Czech Republic) - May 25th This was my second mountain running event, having begun my experiences on home soil 4 years ago at Betwys y Coed, but the 2019 edition in Janske Lazne appealed because it involved running up only, and it fell a bare fortnight after I moved up a category. Entries closed officially three weeks before, and at that stage I was one of only 6 in the over 75 category, and my friend, Steve Herington, from ‘down the road’ at the other end of Herefordshire was one of 13 entries for the over 70 race. By the time we arrived in Janske Lazne to register, there were 9 over 75s and, I believe, about 16 over 70s who had materialized. Still, not a huge field, but for me at least, a lot of unknown quantities (one of whom was myself).

The course started in the town square (at the lower end of the town), quickly entered the broadleaf woodland and climbed up the opposite side of the valley before descending a little to the foot of the cable car run, where it began a relentless climb up to the summit of Cerna Hora (1299m). Steve and I both recce’ed the first part of the course, which though quite demanding in race conditions, didn’t present anything too rigorous. We then caught the cable car up to the summit, to check out the last couple of kilometers. The finish was at the top end of the cable car run, which involved a fast downhill run for the competitors along about 500m of hard track and tarmac, after emerging from the woods beyond. On the day there were two starts, the first at 11am for all the female competitors (Susan Ridley of Scotland the only UK woman running) and the over 60 men. The gun went off promptly at 11, and we thinned out sufficiently not to be too troubled by the narrower tracks in the woods. After 3.5 km we were on a tarmac path leading to the cable car station and the beginning of the steep climb. A bit of a dogleg, then, as the rain began, we started on the 3km long straight, steepish climb, where most of those around me began to walk, as did I! With numbers and age categories on both our backs and fronts, we were all clearly labeled, so I realized that the man who pulled ahead of me after about 4.5km was José Antonio Arias de la Cruz, who I had assessed to be one of the main contenders for the over 75 race. He was also clearly struggling to keep ahead, so when we veered off onto a narrow, stony path and he faltered, I was able to pass him and keep the momentum going as the path changed to a steeper climb over horizontally laid stone slabs, left rather slippery after the rain. By the time the path leveled out a bit we were just 1km from the finish, on the section Steve and I had recce’ed the day before. The path narrowed a bit where snowdrifts hadn’t fully melted, and then we were onto the last climb on the wide stony track that led to the tarmac and the finish straight. Steve had already finished, slightly disappointed to think he’d come 4th in his race, but, to my surprise, he thought I had won the over 75 event. My Spanish rival came in shortly after, and then the German, Gerold Seiffert, who I’d also thought could be a contender, so, yes, it was possible. We took the cable car down to the town, showered and later walked down to the town square where the results had been taped up on the town hall office windows. Steve had in fact finished third over 70 (the runner he’d been locked in ‘combat’ with had obviously been in a different age group) and I had come out on top in the over 75s. So two Midland Masters had brought home two European Mountain Running medals. A long way to go, but a great experience and a pleasing outcome! Guy Whitmarsh
