Our Treasurer, Martin Wilkinson, has outlined how subscriptions are allocated and he is to be commended for his efforts to keep these at a minimum. The report on the Annual General Meeting assures members that the financial position is such that subscriptions remain unchanged for the coming year. The fantastic achievement of Dave Phillips, at the age of 78, in completing 500 marathons, as well as raising £125,000 for charity, is amazing and we send him our hearty congratulations. Continued Our last subscription increase was 6 years ago, in 2013. Despite pressures on the funds we have maintained a healthy bank balance often with a small profit at the end of the year. We are probably the least expensive (and the most frugal) masters athletic club in the UK largely as a result of being “virtual”. Many years ago, before I became treasurer, the club was bequeathed a large donation that has allowed us to underpin the risk on a number of high profile events. We make a small loss on smaller events and, depending on numbers or enter, usually make a profit on the larger events. We are keen not to increase competition fees as far as possible and have managed to support more athletes competing in England and MMAC vests. The largest part of your subscription, about a third, goes to our national body, the British Masters Athletic Federation which coordinates the online subscription and competition entries process via their website. The good news is the BMAF has agreed to reduce the members affiliation fee this year. This will allow us to retain membership subscriptions at current levels for even longer. Affiliation to England Athletics and England Athletic Masters Association (EAMA) accounts for another 14% of the subscription. A large portion of the subscription then go to support competitions, medals and awards, officials costs at events, track and field league and subsidizing MMAC members in a number of events. MMAC running costs, including stationary, postage, committee expenses are just 7%. The newsletter costs on average 6% but this will be much less percentage for those who get the online version and much more for those who pay the additional subscription for the postal version. So, in summary your £15 subscription is roughly divided between £7 to BMAF, England Athletics and EAMA. £6 to support events and MMAC members in competition £1 for running MMAC £1 for the online newsletter Bottom line is we remain a healthy club despite our modest subscription costs. Well done to all our members, officials, volunteers and committee members. I’m pleased to report that there is no plan to increase subscriptions for at least another year. She is preparing a team for the inter-area match o 6 July. Thanks for all her excellent work over the years. 4 MMA 261 May/June 2019 Rolinston parkrun report Peter Wright, Tracy Hinxman, Mick Edwards and Sue Kneill-Boxley Martin says I've been framed Midlands Masters started its foray into Parkrun tourism, with the Rosliston parkrun in April just before the AGM. Local MMAC runners Tracey Hinxman and Pete Wright were already the W40 and M55 age record holders and they took first male and female. They had a close battle with Pete finishing 7th and Tracey 8th on the day. Although a new member since then Jason Tilley was 4th on his return to his old stamping ground. In the battle of the committee, Mick Smedley was taking part in his first parkrun ever and his first race since injury several years ago and he showed he still can give the youngsters a run with a fine 19th in 22.13 for a M70 age group record. Meanwhile Graham Lamb and Sue Kneill-Boxley were having a close battle but just as Sue got ahead she suffered an injury and had to drop out Just behind was Martin Wilkinson. Next to finish and not surprisingly taking the V70 age group record was Angela Copson in 23.48, with the 2nd highest age group rating at the event. Great to see Angela coming to the event and staying for the AGM. Adrian Lloyd was next in followed by Anthony Edwards. It was a nice way to prepare for the AGM and if anyone want to visit Rosliston it is a nice course at a forestry centre. As we are putting this news letter together we are about to have the next tourism event at Walsall Parkrun on the 25th May. Then we go to Sandwell on 29th June and to Perry Barr on 13th July. We will see how this is going after Sandwell and see if we will then want other venues. Just a reminder the entries for Jesolo for the European Track and Field Championships close on 31st July. Hoping for a big contingent of MMAC members out there.
