A common thread connecting the string of winners raced by owner/breeder Frank Stronach, including a Canadian champion of 2015, are the early lessons they learned at his Adena Springs South training center in Central Florida. Now in its 20th year of operation, Adena Springs South is guided by a phi- losophy of allowing young horses to develop at their own pace, suitable to their physiology and mental maturity. In charge of implementing this philosophy is trainer Richie Purcell, who has been with Stronach’s Williston, Fla., farm from the start. Purcell began his ca- reer at Coolmore Stud in Ireland, which led to a position at Ashford Stud in Kentucky. He spent several months at Lindsay Park in Adelaide, South Australia, working for Colin Hayes and dabbled in steeplechase riding once back in the States, where he also worked for Brookside Farm near Versailles, Ky. • Looking to Bolster Regional Racing, Stronach to Close
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2017 LOOKING TO BOLSTER WHAT THE TAX CHANGE MEANS TO A HORSEPLAYER by Joe Bianca REGIONAL RACING, Last week, the NTRA announced that a decade-long effort to modernize tax regulations for horseplayers was set to become STRONACH TO CLOSE FARM law. Its CEO Alex Waldrop recounted Tuesday in the TDN the lobbying efforts, stalled bills and fighting through bureaucracy that brought the industry to this unmitigated victory. The crucial turning point occurred after the NTRA, acting on suggestions from prominent horseplayers like Steve Crist and Andy Beyer, as well as its key lobbyist on the Hill, decided to stop trying to go through the morass of Congress and instead petition the Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service directly to make the change. That proved to be what pushed the effort across the finish line, thanks in large part to two comment periods, one in early 2015 and one at the end of 2016, where thousands of horseplayers wrote in and explained why the current tax law was unfair, ridiculously out of date and a drain on them as well as the industry at large.
