  • Looking to Bolster Regional Racing, Stronach to Close
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2017 LOOKING TO BOLSTER WHAT THE TAX CHANGE MEANS TO A HORSEPLAYER by Joe Bianca REGIONAL RACING, Last week, the NTRA announced that a decade-long effort to modernize tax regulations for horseplayers was set to become STRONACH TO CLOSE FARM law. Its CEO Alex Waldrop recounted Tuesday in the TDN the lobbying efforts, stalled bills and fighting through bureaucracy that brought the industry to this unmitigated victory. The crucial turning point occurred after the NTRA, acting on suggestions from prominent horseplayers like Steve Crist and Andy Beyer, as well as its key lobbyist on the Hill, decided to stop trying to go through the morass of Congress and instead petition the Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service directly to make the change. That proved to be what pushed the effort across the finish line, thanks in large part to two comment periods, one in early 2015 and one at the end of 2016, where thousands of horseplayers wrote in and explained why the current tax law was unfair, ridiculously out of date and a drain on them as well as the industry at large. $400,000 Pat Day Mile Presented by LG&E and KU (Grade III) 95th Running – Saturday, May 4, 2019 (Kentucky Derby Day) 3-Year-Olds at One Mile on Dirt at Churchill Downs Stakes Record – 1:34.18, Competitive Edge (2015) Track Record – 1:33.26, Fruit Ludt (2014) Name Origin: Formerly known as the Derby Trial, the one-mile race for 3-year-olds was moved from Opening Night to Kentucky Derby Day and renamed the Pat Day Mile in 2015 to honor Churchill Downs’ all-time leading jockey Pat Day. Day, enshrined in the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame in 2005, won a record 2,482 races at Churchill Downs, including 156 stakes, from 1980-2005. None was more memorable than his triumph aboard W.C. Partee’s Lil E. Tee in the 1992 Kentucky Derby. He rode in a record 21 consecutive renewals of the Kentucky Derby, a streak that ended when hip surgery forced him to miss the 2005 “Run for the Roses.” Day’s Triple Crown résumé also included five wins in the Preakness Stakes – one short of Eddie Arcaro’s record – and three victories in the Belmont Stakes. His 8,803 career wins rank fourth all-time and his mounts that earned $297,914,839 rank second. During his career Day lead the nation in wins six times (1982-84, ’86, and ’90-91). His most prolific single day came on Sept. 13, 1989, when Day set a North American record by winning eight races from nine mounts at Arlington Park.

  • Bill Oppenheim, Dec
Bill Oppenheim, Dec. 16, 2009–Roll The Dice FROM THE DESK OF... Bill Oppenheim ROLL THE DICE Predictability. Well, who wouldn=t like a crystal ball? Mine might be slightly less clouded than others, but anybody who tells you they can predict which sires are going to be successful, and which aren=t, is deluding somebody. There=s a long history of can=t-miss stallion prospects who ended up on foreign shores, and equally a distinguished roll-call of relative nobodies (Distorted Humor, Pivotal) who=ve become household names in the breeding world. Write it down a 100 times: what they do on the racetrack isn=t necessarily what they=re going to do as a sire. In recent years, stallions that were unproven when the horses were bred have sired more than their share of good horses in their first or second crops. It wasn=t just a sales ploy, though for a while there you had a better chance of making money by using first-year sires regardless of whether they ended up good, bad, or indifferent. Rather the opposite is the case during recessionary times--breeders tend to fall back on the proven commodities, and the unproven sire becomes a more difficult sell. You can particularly see this when, as now, the prices on proven sires have fallen so much. Thus, I have knocked out from consideration as When you have legitimately good stallions standing for >value= unproven sires five horses who stand for more $7,500 and $10,000, the unproven horse at that and than $40,000: F2008 Bernardini ($60,000 first all higher prices has to offer something really special to two-year-olds 2010); F2009 Street Sense ($50,000); attract those breeders who were fighting over them and F2010 Curlin ($60,000) and Big Brown ($55,000)-- two years ago.
