The effect is the inside looks like a cheap paperback, with very bad reproduction of the photos, making them grainy with no detail, and no 'oomph'. The photos are great, and some standouts have been reproduced better elsewhere. But this is the source book, so you just want to see them presented better on glossy paper, with a much finer sharper dot screen reproduction. Surviving an episode that presages the horrors of WWII, Halsman transforms him- self from a victim of rampant anti-Semitism into a purveyor of the marvelous. The story begins in September 1928, when Halsman and his father were hiking in the Tyrolean Alps. While Halsman went ahead on the trail, his father was attacked and murdered. The Jewish 22 year old from Latvia found himself alone in hostile territory; Nazism was on the rise and Innsbruck’s foremost forensic pathologist, Karl Meixner, saw to it that Halsman would be tried for killing his father. It was a miscarriage of justice that foreshadowed the many horrors to come in Austria, and though the events are now lost in the shadow of the Holocaust, they were then known across Europe as ‘The Austrian Dreyfus Affair.’ Many intellectuals, including Albert Einstein, came to Halsman’s aid in a public battle that pitted reason against irrational prejudice. The Persistence of Memory tapestry is the largest sized authentic edition of Dali’s most famous work of art, measuring 55” x 65”. It is an eye-catching statement piece for any large room. Produced in 1973 under Dali’s direction in a limited edition of 500, it was made in France. To preserve the detail and fidelity of the original painting, the woven cotton facing of the tapestry was imprinted with the image, then backed with a lining and fitted with a numbered and signatured swatch, attesting its authenticity.     Salvador Dalí: BIOGRAPHY Introduction At the age of 37, in 1941, Salvador Dalí finished writing his autobiography The Secret Life of Salvador Dalí. The book, published the following year, revealed a web of factual and fictionalized events from the artist’s life. Dalí was by this time an international celebrity, a status he enjoyed as much for his art as for his eccentric public image. In the years since, countless biographies have been written, unraveling the mystery Dalí created, telling of the man who became the legend: Salvador Dalí. Childhood and Family Salvador Dalí began his life May 11, 1904, the second-born son of Salvador Dalí Cusí and Felipa Domènech Ferrés. Sadly, he never knew his older brother, also named Salvador Dalí, who died in infancy only nine months earlier. In 1908 came the birth of his only sister, Ana María. The family lived in the Catalan town of Figueres, Spain, but spent the summers in the seaside village of Cadaqués. Dalí’s father was a notary, a position of political and social power. As a child Dalí feared his father, who was known for his bad temper, and took refuge in the comfort and kindness of his mother and the household servants who spoiled him. At the age of four, the young Dalí began his formal education at the Escuela Pública (public school) in Figueres. Dalí disliked school, and spent much of his time daydreaming instead of studying. Displeased with Dalí’s progress, his father transferred him to a private school where all of his classes were taught in French.
