The Dazzler 145 Cheshire Women's League Ma THE Sophie Ecclestone impresses on full England debut … Chester’s bowlers to fore as they DAZZLER 145 see off Wistaston remain top of division one … Oxton beat Didsbury for best ever win … Cottam hits 100 as Oakmere cruise … Astley Bridge leave the League … Bredbury book Finals Day spot … Cheshire outgunned at Northampton Sophie Ecclestone, who made her senior county debut for Cheshire in 2014, before switching to Lancashire, made her full England debut in Sunday’s T20 international against Pakistan. The 17 year old left arm spinner took 1-21 in four overs, bowling as many as 12 dot balls, with Pakistan opener Sidra Ameen becoming her first international victim. There are two more matches in the series – on Tuesday at 1400 and Thursday at 1830. All matches are live on Sky Sports 2 and BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra. Video highlights are also available via the BBC Sport website. Sophie made the league’s highest score this season of 133 not out when she played for Chester against Appleton. Her interview with the ECB website can be watched here . CHESHIRE WOMEN’S LEAGUE Division One / Two Cross Divisional Matches – June 26: Didsbury 61 (30.1; Hannah Thornhill 4-9, Hannah Bratt 4-21) (3pts) Wis taston Village 62-4 (19.3; Kara Townsend 25, Alison Smith 21, Laura Smith 3-11) (25pts) For the second successive week, rain arrived in Cheshire during mid-afternoon, albeit a bit later than last week. Wistaston thus go down as one of the big winners, as by bowling out Didsbury cheaply they managed to complete victory before the worst of the weather set in. Oakmere 182-5 (40; Phoebe Cottam 84*, Shami Ahmed 27, Sarah Worsdale 23, Ellie Grisedale 2-29) (15pts) Oxton dnb (11pts) Oakmere had posted an imposing total before rain intervened to deprive them of the chance to complete the victory Stockport Trinity 90-4 (30; Carys White 38*, Ellie Barker 24, Anni Rashid 2-14) (12pts) Appleton dnb (10pts) This match was the first to be curtailed, with the first innings not completed Chester Boughton Hall (25pts) w/o Astley Bridge (minus 10pts) Ashton -on-Mersey (25pts) w/o Hawarden Park (minus 10pts) July 3: Didsbury 83 (32.3; Maria Holmes 23, Meghana Bhide 20, A Harrison 4-13, Mollie Price 2-3) (5pts) Oxton 85-5 (23.2; Jess Pickavance 29, Megan Cureton 25, Bhide 3-11) (25pts) Surely Oxton’s best ever result as the second placed team in the league went down to defeat here. Division two could still be a three horse race. Chester Boughton Hall 108-8 (40; Beth Nicholson 37*, Maddie Goodman 3-21, Hannah Bratt 2-26) (25pts) Wistaston Village 83 (36.5; Hannah Bratt 29, Annette Axon 4 -10, Charlotte Thompson 4-15) (7pts) Without the protection of a large total, Chester’s bowling attack came up trumps to maintain their 100% record. Appleton, who Chester play next, are perhaps the only team who can now realistically stop the title going to Boughton Hall. Oakmere 246-1 (40; Phoebe Cottam 100*, Shami Ahmed 71*, Helen Smith 36) (25pts) Hawarden Park 41 (27; Jenny Broughall 16, Cottam 3-4, Sarah Worsdale 3-10) (1pt) Oakmere recorded their first league win since the opening day as they recorded the highest team score to date this season. Phoebe Cottam batted through the innings for her maiden senior century, and was still able to take three cheap wickets in the Hawarden reply. Cottam and Shami Ahmed added an unbroken 168 for the second wicket. Matches that can still be re-arranged in Division Three. Clubs please advise of any new dates. Any club that has a scheduled division one/two match against that club should note that those fixtures will not now take place. The Astley Bridge squad are free to join any other league club should they wish. The revised master fixture programme has been mailed to all club main representatives. The biggest change caused by the removal of Astley Bridge’s results from the official records is that Wistaston Village now lead division two, although Stockport Trinity could regain top spot by winning their games in hand. Dual player registrations: Georgia Heath and Lucy Tarry (Appleton junior members) played T20 for Lymm Oughtrington Park. They remain available for league cricket, but not T20 cricket, for Appleton for the remainder of the season. Roshini Prince-Navaratnam plays regularly for Saxton in the Yorkshire League (Northern League) Premier Division and is thus unable to play in our league competition due to ECB restrictions. However, she has registered to play for Didsbury in our T20 competitions. Facebook site – Cheshire Cricket News & Banter which clubs might want to make use of. T20 DIVISIONAL COMPETITION Western Division – June 27: Hawarden Park 64-6 (20: Laura Wilson 16, Emily MacKenzie 3-17, Abbie Adams 2-9) Wistaston Swans 65-7 (11.2; Hannah Bratt 25ret, Rachel Warrenger 3-12, Emma Birks 3-18) 2014 and 2015 T20 champions Wistaston finally recorded their first win in this competition, and not without Hawarden giving then a fright. The win though comes too late for the Crewe-based side’s hopes of retaining their title Matches that can still be re-arranged in the Western Division. Clubs please advise of any new dates. The order of the three matches will be determined once all competing teams are known. CHESHIRE SENIORS NatWest Women’s County T20 Division Three – June 26: Cheshire 56 (17.1; Kate Coppack 21, Kari Anderson 4-1, Samantha Haggo 2-12) Scotland 57-6 (13.2; Lauren O’Reilly 3-9, Laura MacLeod 2-11) A valiant effort to defend the small total Cheshire had posted ultimately ended in defeat in the first T20 match of the year. Laura MacLeod made her return to the county fold after seven years. Cheshire v Oxfordshire – Match cancelled Cheshire: Sarah McCann (captain), Laura MacLeod, Charlotte Williams, Ellie Mason, Sami Fowler, Sammi Short, Lauren O’Reilly, Morganne Prince, Natalie Lyons, Kate Coppack, Zehmarad Afzal. Scorer: Katy Thomason-Stewart July 3: Devon 139-5 (20; Cait O’Keeffe 43*, Amara Carr 40, Jodie Dibble 26, Kate Coppack 3-23) Cheshire 77-7 (20; Laura MacLeod 33, Sophie Mackenzie 2-16, Dibble 2-17) A powerful display of hitting in the first six over powerplay from a full international in Jodie Dibble and an England Academy player in Amara Carr, set Devon on the way to a total that Cheshire could not match. Today’s two matches were played on Northampton’s Wantage Road County Ground Cheshire 67-8 (20; Lauren O’Reilly 18, Meera Patel 2-8) Northamptonshire 68-3 (16.5) Game two also saw Cheshire fail to post enough runs to challenge for the match.

  • The Dazzler Extra – on This Week – May 31
THE DAZZLER EXTRA – ON THIS WEEK – MAY 31 May 29 2007 Laura MacLeod announced her international retirement after playing 13 Tests, 73 ODIs and three IT20s over the previous eight years. June 3 2010 Hyde beat Bowdon in the T20 Eastern Division with a successful chase of 111-1 in only 13 overs. Jo Hurlston, Lucy Makinson and Rebecca Griffin were the batsmen reaching 25 very rapidly. Leesa Mellon also took 3-22 in this match. May 31 2011 Was this the warning shot? Possibly the biggest upset in the history of the League’s competitions was Hyde’s Knockout Cup elimination of Chester Boughton Hall in 2012, but in the previous year’s quarter-final, Chester survived a scare from the same opposition to win by just seven runs. June 2 2013 Six years on from the international retirement announcement, Laura made her debut for League newcomers Wistaston and took three wickets for seven runs in their victory over Oxton. June 1 2014 This was a day where there were three incredibly close finishes in the division one/two cross- divisional matches, with all three eventually going in favour of the second division club. First division pacesetters Oakmere lost their 100% record, with Astley Bridge taking the final wicket with the first ball of the 40th over to win by one run. Chester missed their opportunity to make up ground on Oakmere here, going down to Wistaston on the last ball after Laura MacLeod scored 75% of her side’s runs (91 in a score of 123-9) to lead the Crewe side to victory.

Madi Hudson was the hero, leading the way with 71 at almost a run a ball, being joined by Charlotte Neal for a century partnership. Leyland lost regular wickets in reply as they struggled with their imposing target. A trip to Yorkshire to play Sessay – the club that defeated Didsbury at the same stage in 2018 and 2019 – now awaits the Vipers. June 10: JG Meakin 132-4 (20; Davina Perrin 60*, Stephanie Butler 34, Rosemary Cockle 23, Evelyn Jones 2- 18) Porthill Park 98 (18.1; Becky Cripwell 42, Butler 4-14, Hannah Beasley 2-13) • Porthill's involvement in the competition ended after defeat in this tough assignment against JG Meakin, who can still call on a large number of Staffordshire's senior squad. This is the first time a League side has been beaten by a club from another league in this year's competition.

Ma THE Chester complete T20 double on Finals Day, seeing off Didsbury 1sts and Trinity … DAZZLER 164 Didsbury 2nds win development KO … Chester stay in contention for League title, but Appleton’s challenge ends … Wistaston wrap up division two … League Dinner tickets now on sale … Lancashire Thunder lose all three of their opening Super League games FINALS DAY Ch ester Boughton Hall hosted the triple-header Finals Day this year, and also took home the trophies in both finals that they were contesting. Many of the Chester players produced fine performances, but the star of the show was surely acting captain Kate Coppack, who reached the retirement score in both matches, and took a combined 5-15 in the eight overs she bowled during the day. Match 1 – Development Knockout Cup Final: Stockport Georgians 77-9 (20; Liv Bell 22, Zara Matthews 2-6, Ellen Gallimore 2-13, Tasneem Akram 2-17) Didsbury 2nd XI 80-3 (15.1; Laura Griffiths 27*) • Georgians may have won division three this year, but Didsbury’s seconds gained some revenge by triumphing in the knockout competition that is exclusively for teams in that division. Tasneem Akram struck twice early on, and Georgians were struggling on 11-3. Liv Bell led a recovery of sorts, but with Zara Matthews and others bowling well, the final total set the Manchester side less than four per over. Beth Garnett produced an excellent spell in the second innings, but Laura Griffiths led the way as the target was reached with almost five overs to spare. Match 2 – Senior Knockout Cup Final: Chester Boughton Hall Deemons 101-8 (20; Kate Coppack 25ret, Nadia Wheeler 21, Leesa Mellon 2-7, Millie Frost 2-8) Didsbury Swordettes 68-9 (20; Hannah Jones 34*, Kate Coppack 4-7, Dawn Prestidge 3-15, Ali Cutler 2-7) • Didsbury’s first team could not make it a double celebration for the club as an impressive display comfortably saw the Deemons to their seventh Knockout win in the 11 years the competition has been played.

  • On This Week – June 28
THE DAZZLER EXTRA – ON THIS WEEK – JUNE 28 June 29 2010 Appleton remained the last unbeaten team across all competitions, having maintained this record by the tiniest of margins at home to Chester Boughton Hall. The result meant Appleton guaranteed top spot in the T20 Western Division and a home semi-final. The Tigers needed to chase down 106 without a significant contribution from Emma Barlow on this occasion, who fell second ball to Lorna Thomas. The crucial contribution came with an unbeaten 23 in 14 deliveries from Jess Lewis, which included four from the final delivery when two were required. It was the fifth occasion in that season when a three-figure total had not been sufficient to win a 20 over match. July 1 2012 Appleton took a major step towards a third successive title as they beat Chester Boughton Hall off the final ball. Emma Barlow made an unbeaten 80 in their successful chase of 153. June 30 2013 Ali Cutler took her league batting average for the season to an incredible 432 after an unbeaten knock of 81 in Chester’s win over Bolton Indians. June 29 2015 Vicki Dean reached 25 in just nine deliveries and hit three of her first four balls for six in Trafford’s Knockout Cup win over Bredbury. July 1 2015 There was an absorbing contest in this Knockout semi-final between Stockport Trinity and Wistaston Village. Fortunes ebbed and flowed, before Laura Newton saw her side home after retiring at 25, as required, and then returning in a last wicket stand with Hannah Thornhill.
