THE STATS ISSUE

Before we get into the 2020 season statistics, some important news items:

The Annual General Meeting of the Cheshire Women’s League will be held on Wednesday November 18 at 1930. Due the current health situation, this meeting will, for the first time, be conducted remotely via the Zoom platform. Please ensure your club is represented at the meeting, especially as there will be no need to travel to a meeting venue this year. The business of the meeting will include: • Reports from League Officers • Elections involving candidates wishing to stand for League Officer positions for the next 12 months. Please get in touch if you are interested in standing for: Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, Press Officer, Web & Results Administrator, Fixtures Secretary, Senior Competitions Secretary, Rules & Disciplinary Secretary, Umpires & Scorers Representative, Welfare Officer • Assessment of applications from clubs wishing to join the League’s senior competitions for the first time in 2021. If you are aware of any interested clubs, please encourage them to get in contact to enquire as to the application process as soon as possible – ideally their applications would be received at least one week prior to the meeting.

I am pleased to announce that League President Di Totty has been appointed as an independent non-executive director of the Cheshire Cricket Board for a period of two years, with a specific responsibility for the development of the women’s and girls’ game in Cheshire.

THE LAST RESULT - Summer Series Development Division – September 20:

Wistaston Village 73-7 (20; Toyin Higgins 13, Zoe Davies 13, Natalie Stevens 2-3, Jill Tildsley 2-15) (25pts) Langley 56-9 (20; Abbey Lamidey 16, Anna Bourne 3-4, Phoebe Howle 2-9)

• A series of early for Anna Bourne checked Langley’s reply early on and ensured it would be Wistaston, rather than their opponents, who finished the season with two wins from four.

5 Oxton 8 1 0 6 1 12 17 -1.97 44

Porthill were convincing winners with a 100 per cent record and an 83-point lead in the final standings. After winning their early matches by large margins, Porthill didn’t always have things their own way in the department in the later stages of the season, but no team was able to truly get to grips with their varied attack.

Nantwich and Upton staged an exciting battle for the runners up spot as these two clubs maintained the excellent progress they have made in a short space of time.

THE BEST BATSMEN – WESTERN DIVISION

Total Runs – Batting Award

Evelyn Jones (Porthill Park) 343 Ali Cutler (Chester Boughton Hall) 191 Becky Cripwell (Porthill Park) 170 Beth Hughes (Nantwich) 151 Madi Hudson (Nantwich) 150

Average

Evelyn Jones 114.33 Becky Cripwell 28.33 Seren Smale (Chester Boughton Hall) 28.25 Madi Hudson 25.00 Ali Cutler 23.88

Evelyn Jones was well ahead of the other batsmen in the division, and the season would end with her illustrating her class by making big runs at a higher level in the Rachael Heyhoe-Flint Trophy. Although the league season was curtailed to just eight matches this year, and Jones herself played just five before departing to play in the Trophy, her runs aggregate of 343 is still amongst the top 20 totals in a CWCL season.

(To make the lists below for best , economy rate and strike rate, there was a requirement to have bowled at least 20 overs in the Western and Eastern Divisions and eight overs in the Development Division)

THE BEST BOWLERS – WESTERN DIVISION

Total Wickets – Bowling Award

Bethan Robinson (Nantwich) 14 Ellie-Mae Davies (Porthill Park) 13 Freya Davies (Oxton), Hannah McGowan (Upton), Philippa Dagger (Upton) 11 (With 10 wickets for Chester Boughton Hall 1st XI plus five more for the 2nd XI in the Development Division, Gemma Rose was the league’s leading taker of 2020)

Bethan Robinson was undoubtedly one of the major young breakthrough players of 2020, and she finished with 14 wickets even though she only took wickets in four different matches – in addition to the 4-1 and 4-10 performances mentioned above, she also contributed spells of 3-9 and 3-10.

Average

Ellie-Mae Davies 3.38 Bethan Robinson 3.86 Becky Cripwell 4.11 Hannah Bratt (Nantwich) 6.43 Phillippa Dagger 7.55

Ellie-Mae Davies finished with the best average across all of the league divisions, and also finished in second spot in the Western Division for total wickets, economy rate and strike rate.

Economy Rate

Emily Stones (Porthill Park) 1.65 Ellie-Mae Davies 1.69 Becky Cripwell 1.80 Ali Cutler (Chester Boughton Hall) 1.98 Philippa Dagger 2.02

Emily Stones’ miserly contributions were rewarded with just two wickets, compared to the 13 taken by her team-mate Ellie-Mae Davies.

The records of the players ranked third to fifth here are certainly impressive enough, but the consistent performances of Hannah Jones and Emma Royle truly stand out. Jones went on to demonstrate, via her Rachael Heyhoe-Flint Trophy performances, that even the country’s best women’s batsmen don’t find her easy to score off.

DIVISIONAL TEAMS OF THE YEAR – selected according to a formula

The player ranked top for batting average scored one point and the second ranked batter scored two, and so on, with a similar system used for total runs. These points scores were then added and the batsmen with the lowest total points scores across both total runs and averages were selected for the team. For example, Evelyn Jones scored two points as the highest ranked batsman in the Western Division on both measures.

Four different bowling criteria were used: total wickets, average, economy rate and strike rate. In the Eastern Division, Emma Royle was ranked top for total wickets and average and second for economy and strike rate, so she scored a total of six points.

The selected wicketkeeper is the player with the most dismissals in this area.

Players shown as all-rounders are those who qualified for these divisional teams as both batsmen and bowlers. While many of the selected batsmen in the Eastern Division team also made good contributions with the ball in individual matches, none bowled the minimum qualifying 20 over quota across the full season.

SENIOR REPRESENTATIVE CRICKET

Rachael Heyhoe-Flint Trophy - Selected Results – September 19:

Lightning 303-5 (50; Sarah Bryce 136*, Teresa Graves 65, Abi Freeborn 40, Bethan Ellis 25, Anisha Patel 2-46) Central Sparks 248-8 (50; Evelyn Jones 115*, Gwenan Davies 48, 37, Ellis 3-25, Kathryn Bryce 3-25)

• Evelyn Jones ended what has been a very successful tournament for her in spectacular fashion, even if her team ended up on the losing side in this run spree and saw their remote hopes of topping the group disappear. • When you exclude the various England players who only appeared in two matches during the tournament, Evelyn Jones’ batting average of 66.80 was the fourth best across all eight teams. Hannah Jones’ bowling economy rate of 3.17 was the second best by the same measure.
