Porthill Wrap up Western Division with Two Matches to Spare Despite Being
Porthill wrap up Western Division with two matches to spare despite being given another scare by Upton … Didsbury edge the first of the two top of the table clashes in the Eastern Division, but Trinity remain in the hunt … September is ECB’s Women’s Cricket Big Month CHESHIRE WOMEN’S LEAGUE Summer Series Western Division – August 30: Porthill Park 60-9 (30; Becky Cripwell 29, Philippa Dagger 3-5, Madi Arthur 2-9, Hannah McGowan 2- 10, Sophie Morris 2-11) (25pts) Upton 51-9 (30; Charlie Scudder 12, Amy Scerri 3-12, Cripwell 2-2, Lucy Shenton 2-4, Grace Potts 2- 5) (5pts) • Porthill Park are the winners of the Western Division for 2020, sealing the honours with two matches to spare. The Potteries-based club have undoubtedly been the best team, but once again didn’t have everything their own way as they wrapped up the title. However, despite posting a target of just two runs per over, Porthill’s bowlers took early wickets and never relinquished their grip. Amongst some impressive bowling figures Philippa Dagger’s outstanding season for Upton continued; and Becky Cripwell conceded just two runs in her six overs, having also held the Porthill innings together earlier, and she is a strong contender for the league’s best all-rounder of the season. Chester Boughton Hall 79-7 (20; Ali Cutler 45, Molly Price 3-8, Alexa Harrison 3-14) (25pts) Oxton 32 (18.3; Freya Davies 12, Gemma Rose 3-4, Tilly Buss 2-0, Nandu Valliyil 2-7) (4pts) • Ali Cutler’s innings stood out on a day when no other batsman passed 12. -

Matters arising: a. Following the suggestion raised at the previous meeting that the Club nominated worthy individuals to the National Honours System, consultation with various Club contacts took place. On review, the decision was taken not to support the request. b. Mike Williams formally welcomed Stuart Cain to the Club as Chief EXecutive. 6. Feedback from the Board Meeting. a. Mike Williams reported that the Board meeting held on the 19th September had been finance focused. He updated that the year-end position would not be far off the original budget, primarily due to the furlough job retention scheme, insurance of Major Match Day ticket sales and donations from the Membership. b. He noted that 2021 would be financially challenging without a Test match and the eXpected ongoing impact of Covid-19. Uncertainty around the funding of the Plaza development due to begin work in Autumn was noted. It was reported however that the FY21 cricket budget had not been adversely affected. It was reported that assurances about the going concern of EEL had been provided, despite the difficult trading position. c. It was confirmed that the Board had granted Honourary Life Memberships to Tim Ambrose and Jeetan Patel, and that Ian Bell had already received one prior to his retirement. -

Curiously, their only reverse came in a cross-divisional fixture against second division Stockport Trinity – Oakmere were victorious in all matches against teams in their own division. Appleton maintained a strong challenge for a long time and hit the top spot as late as early August, but crucially they then lost to Oakmere for the second time. Ultimately though it was Oakmere who prevailed thanks to their wealth of bowling options and their ever-reliable key batters. Many of Oakmere’s wins were by large margins, and their second win over Chester Boughton Hall in early September was perhaps their most eye-catching performance, however Oakmere also had to rely on their winning knack in other closer fixtures, such as their first games against both Chester and runners-up Appleton. Stockport Trinity were convincing winners of the second division and will be back in the top flight in 2019. -
