He first addressed members in September 2000, during his benefit year. ADRIAN NIGEL AYMES was born in Southampton on 4 June 1964, and attended Bellemoor School. He came late to first-class cricket. He joined the Hampshire staff when 21 years of age in 1986 but did not gain a regular place until he finally displaced Bob Parks some four years later. He gave notice of what was to follow on his first-class debut against Surrey at The Oval in 1987. With Hampshire in trouble, he battled to 58 not out. Subsequently, no player in the first-class game during the 1990s sold his wicket more dearly. He was undefeated in a high proportion of his innings, which spoke volumes for his technique, temperament and sheer cussedness. With Robin Smith, he became the beating heart and consciousness of the Hampshire batting. If he took root and dug in, Hampshire were generally assured of a competitive total. All of his eight centuries were made in adversity. Of all Hampshire’s wicket-keepers, only his successor, Nic Pothas, has a higher batting average. He was a passionately proud professional, and never gave less than his best. He was fortunate to keep wicket to two of the genuinely great bowlers in the history of the game. A satisfactory turn out of 34 clubs spoke mainly in favour of continuing with the current five division regionalised league structure, although with the rules of selection relaxed in some way to allow young 1st XI players to take part and improve what is perceived to be their alternative discipline. A number of other clubs spoke in favour of forming a friendly structure with up to 12 games per season because they were unable to commit to a full competitive programme, yet wanted Sunday cricket for their players. It was suggested that these fixtures would be set out by the league and structured in a geographical manner as far as possible, without any qualification restrictions. Chairman David Humpage said after the meeting: “We need to find out which format clubs prefer next season. We shall be asking all clubs to respond to a questionnaire as set out below. QUESTION 1: Would you prefer to play in: (a) The current league structure or (b) A friendly structure QUESTION 2: How many teams would your club anticipate fielding in either category. QUESTION 3: If it proves impractical to operate a friendly structure for numerical or geographical reasons, would your club in (b) be willing to take part in a league structure?     Old Blundellian Cricket Club Ted Crowe Room NEWSLETTER MAY 2019 Not a great deal to report this month. We are pleased to see Somerset at the top of the County table after 2 wins against Kent and Nottinghamshire. It was good to see Dom Bess play in the Kent RL one day game and the box was well attended with about 30 attendees. Again another fine victory for SCCC. Warwickshire box Chad Murrin has arranged a cricket exchange with Warwickshire CCC, they have invited OB box members to visit on the 19th and 20th August (1st/2nd days of county match v Somerset) with access to a box facility – we will reciprocate by offering a day at Taunton to Warwickshire CCC.
