This is a significant achievement of which you and your family should be justifiably proud. Just as you now have a solid foundation on which to build a career or broaden your education in graduate school, Metro State has secured a strong heritage of academic excellence that will serve the Colorado community into the future. As a graduate of Metro State, you are now a part of that heritage, which includes more than 65,000 alumni, all of whom through their tenacity, energy and intelligence are having a significant impact on their community. Here are but a few examples of their achievements: • Kevin Vaughan (’86, journalism) has written for Colorado newspapers since 1989. Currently a writer for The Denver Post, he was a finalist for the 2008 Pulitzer Prize. • Tracie Keesee (’77, political science), a 20-year Denver Police Department veteran, was recently promoted to division chief of the department for technology and support. Keesee holds a doctorate from the University of Denver. • Patricia Hurrieta (’93, behavioral science and teacher education licensure) is the principal of Godsman Elementary, a Denver public school. • Malcolm Farley (’81, art) is an internationally acclaimed artist who’s been commissioned to create paintings of major events such as the Olympics, the Oscars, the 2008 Democratic National Convention and the 2009 World Series. • Dave Zur (‘89, marketing and media communications) is senior vice president of operations and engineering at Altitude Sports and Entertainment. Your degree from Metro State symbolizes the knowledge, experiences and skills you have attained that make you ready and qualified to accept the challenge of engaging as a citizen in a culturally diverse society, much as the people highlighted above have done. Jordan Closing Ceremony........................................................................................................Ms. Lynn Kaersvang Recessional Interpreters for the Deaf: Ms. Jean Kelly and Ms. Leora Rosenbaum 4 Commencement Speaker Bernard Franklin, Ph.D. Executive Vice President, National Collegiate Athletic Association President of four colleges before joining the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in 2003, Bernard Franklin now serves as its executive vice president. A voluntary association of more than 1,000 member institutions, the NCAA has a national staff of nearly 400. Franklin oversees the largest administrative area of the NCAA, which includes membership and academic affairs, governance, educational affairs, research, and diversity and inclusion. He also assures the effective functioning of the NCAA governance groups. Franklin previously served as president of Virginia Union University in Richmond; Livingstone College and Hood Theological Seminary in Salisbury, N.C.; and Saint Augustine’s College in Raleigh, N.C. He is a former member of the NCAA Division II Presidents Council and the Executive Committee. Franklin was inducted into the John McLendon Minority Athletics Administrators Hall of Fame in June 2009. Franklin’s experience in higher education is broad and varied. In 1988, he was selected as one of 28 American Council on Education (ACE) Fellows. Through this prestigious national fellowship, he held an executive internship focused on institutional advancement, academic administration and planning, fiscal management and president/board of trustees’ relations. His experience in higher education also includes serving as a full-time faculty member in the Department of Educational Leadership, School of Education at Miami University of Ohio, and serving as assistant vice president for student affairs at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C. Heavily involved in community service, Franklin has served as a member of the board of The College Fund/United Negro College Fund; Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association; Virginia Literacy Foundation; and Simpson College Board of Trustees. Currently, Franklin is a member of the United Negro College Fund Advisory Board for Indiana and chair of its Corporate Giving Committee; member of the Center for Leadership Development Board; chair of the Board of Trustees for Martin University; and member of the National Consortium for Academics and Sports Board. Franklin also served on the Executive Committee of the Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce and the Executive Committee of Richmond Renaissance Incorporated. He has served on the corporate boards of Delhaize America and Centura Bank, and as a member of the board of trustees at the World Affairs Council of Greater Richmond. A graduate of Simpson College (Iowa), Franklin holds a master’s degree in education from Western Maryland College (currently McDaniel College) and a doctorate in education from Columbia University’s Teacher’s College. 5 Metro State: On the Road to Preeminence Established in 1965, Metropolitan State College of Denver enrolls nearly 23,000 students, with more in-state undergraduates than any other institution in Colorado. In 2005, Metro State set the ambitious long-term goal of becoming the preeminent public urban baccalaureate college in the nation, toward which it has made significant progress. Metro State is steadfast in its mission to provide students from
