Popes as “New Saints” in the Age of Eleventh- Century Reform David Franz Hobelleitner* Abstracts Although some popes already enjoyed saint-like veneration, papal sanctity significantly increased during the ecclesiastical reform in the eleventh century. After all, it was Pope Gregory VII (1073-1085) – one of the main protagonists of the reform – who stated in his Dictatus papae that «The Bishop of Rome, if he has been ordained according to canon law, is undoubtedly made a saint through the merits of blessed Peter […]». These ideas draw attention to general strategies of representation, especially regarding the cult of Early Christian popes (such as Clement I). The increasing worship they enjoyed can be noticed not least in contemporary pictorial programmes. Sebbene alcuni papi godessero già di una venerazione simile a quella di un santo, il riconoscimento della “santità papale” aumentò significativamente nel secolo XI, durante i tempi della riforma ecclesiastica. Papa Gregorio VII (1073-1085), protagonista principale della riforma, affermò infatti nel suo Dictatus papae che «Il vescovo di Roma, se è stato ordinato secondo la legge canonica, è senza dubbio di fatto un santo per i meriti del beato Pietro […]». Queste idee innescano strategie generali di rappresentazione, in particolare per quanto riguarda il culto dei papi paleocristiani (come Clemente I). La venerazione crescente di cui essi sono oggetto può essere notata anche nei programmi pittorici del tempo. L’articolo analizza la diffusione del culto dei papi come “nuovi santi”, cercando di identificare anche le forze motrici di questo fenomeno. Analizzando opere d’arte come l’Intronizzazione di Papa Clemente nella chiesa inferiore di San Clemente e la decorazione perduta dell’abside dell’oratorio di San Nicola nel Palazzo Laterano, l’autore si interroga anche sulle intenzioni che stanno alla base di queste specifiche commissioni e quindi sulla “ri-fondazione” dei culti papali a Roma. In 2018, on the occasion of the canonisation of Pope Paul VI and Archbishop Óscar Romero, the L’Osservatore Romano published an essay by Giovanni Maria Vian on the holiness of popes1. Coincidentally or otherwise, the text appeared on the feast day of Pope Gregory VII, 25th May, and emphasised the striking interest of Pope Gregory and his pontificate regarding the sanctity of the Roman pontiffs. Although some popes already enjoyed saint-like veneration, papal sanctity significantly increased at the height of church reform during the papacy of Pope Gregory VII and his successors in the second half of the eleventh century. Analysing monumental art such as the frescoes of the Lower Church of San Clemente as well as the (lost) decoration of the Oratory of St Nicholas in Lateran Palace, this paper will reflect upon the intentions behind these specific commissions and the (re-)establishment of papal cults in Rome. Even though the cult of saintly pontiffs always remained quite limited, especially popes of politically-charged times were considered saints2. 1. Saintly Popes The concept of papal sanctity has been preoccupying canonists and historians for some time3. POPES AS “NEW SAINTS” IN THE AGE OF ELEVENTH-CENTURY REFORM 63 during the Middle Ages, some Roman bishops were nevertheless considered saintly and accordingly enjoyed veneration by the Roman church4. Almost all Early Christian popes suffered martyrdom, whereby their sanctity was beyond any doubts5. Due to the end of persecution at the beginning of the fourth century, martyrdom became less frequent. Thus, a new category of saints – the saintly confessors – emerged6. Confessors gave testimony of their faith but they not die as martyrs, as was the case with almost all popes from this time on. However, only a few of them enjoyed distinctive veneration by their successors due to their deeds for Christianity. This can be observed by choosing them as patron saints for chapels, oratories, and churches: the basilica at the tomb of St Peter – the first Roman bishop, who died around 65/67 – is probably the most famous case. Moreover, Paschalis I (817-824) nudged the cults of the early pontiffs Urban I and Lucius7, while Gregory IV (827-844) dedicated an oratory in Old St Peter to his predecessor Gregory I8. Furthermore, some popes were mentioned in liturgical books and the canon of the mass, as well as in early calendars and martyrologies9, which was essential for the dissemination of their memoria and consequently their veneration and cult. Nevertheless, it is noteworthy that the compilers of the Vitae of the early pontiffs in the Liber Pontificalis rarely made use of terms such as sanctus and beatus to characterise the popes, whereas these epitheta occur more frequently from the sixth century onwards10. Shortly thereafter, even superlative forms as beatissimus or sanctissimus can also be traced11, while the popes of the late eleventh century were addressed as sancti with striking frequency by their successors12. In general, sanctus was used in a broader context than we would assume today and was not exclusively limited to actually recognised saints13. As Barbara Abou-El-Haj stated: «The most dramatic social and artistic expansion of the cult of saints since the fourth century began in the late tenth century and intensified in the eleventh and twelfth»14. Umberto Longo attests a «notable growth in the varied conceptions of papal sanctity and sainthood»17, which he links to expanded criteria regarding the creation of saints: «governmental, doctrinal and disciplinary»18 virtues were considered more often. 2. Gregory VII and the Dictatus papae Inextricably linked to the question of whether popes are sacred in any way is Pope Gregory VII. Hildebrand of Sovana – born around 1015 in Tuscany – moved to Rome as a youth and received his education at Santa Maria all’Aventino19 (fig. 1). Elected pope in 1073, he was one of the main protagonists of the medieval church reform at its peak and is assuredly one of the most discussed popes of the Middle Ages. In a document filed in his register under March 1075, Gregory himself20 arranged a numbered list of short statements of powers, reserved exclusively to the Apostolic See. This paper – due to its beginning today known as Dictatus papae – is a compilation of Gregory’s conception of the enhanced position of the pope in both ecclesiastical and temporal worlds21. Compiled a year prior to the first excommunication of emperor Henry IV, Gregory claims extensive and exclusive rights for the papacy to strengthen the libertas ecclesiae against secular power. As Horst Fuhrmann observed, some of the 27 sentences of the Dictatus papae are «characterised by a breathtaking audacity that is by no means always covered by the contemporary canonistic tradition»22. However, the function and meaning of the document remain a matter of scholarly debate: Especially its intention as well as the dissemination of the Dictatus papae are still not entirely clear23. However, its outstanding singularity and its explicitly articulated claims stand beyond doubt24. In terms of papal sanctity, proposition XXIII of the Dictatus papae states: The Bishop of Rome, if he has been ordained according to canon law, is undoubtedly made a saint through the merits of blessed Peter, according to the testimony of St Ennodius, Bishop of Pavia, to whom many holy fathers agree, as it is handed down in the decrees of blessed Pope Symmachus25.

Through its artistic treasures, we will trace the transformation of the city from the largest and most populous metropolis on earth to a modest community of less than thirty thousand inhabitants, from the political and administrative capital of the Roman Empire to the spiritual epicenter of medieval Europe. "The sculpture and surrounding chapel honors a Roman noble woman who entered the Order of St. Francis following the death of her husband. The day before her own death from fever, Ludovica received the eucharist and then ordered everyone out of her room. When her servants were finally recalled, “they found her face aflame, but so cheerful that she seemed to have returned from Paradise.” (paraphrased from wikipedia) By representing this decisive moment, and like many of his other sculptures, Bernini seems to mingle the idea of physical ecstasy and religious martyrdom. In its day, this sculpture would have scandalized the recently reformed protestant church which considered any representation of a divine figure blasphemous. Bernini finished the sculpture in 1674 when he was seventy one years old.     La basilica di Santa Maria in Cosmedin è un luogo di culto cattolico di Roma, situato in piazza della Bocca della Verità, nel rione Ripa; officiata dalla Chiesa cattolica greco-melchita, ha la dignità di basilica minore e su di essa insiste l'omonima diaconia. La basilica, frutto dell'ampliamento sotto papa Adriano I (772-790) di un precedente luogo di culto cristiano attestato fin dal VI secolo, fu oggetto di un importante rifacimento nel 1123 ed è attualmente uno dei rari esempi di architet- tura sacra del XII secolo a Roma; è nota per la presenza nel nartece della Bocca della Verità. Un po’di storia Il sito su cui sorge la basilica di Santa Maria in Cosmedin, in epoca romana si trovava al margine sud-orientale del Foro Boario, prossimo al fium Tevere e a Circo Massimo. In quest'area trovava luogo l'Ara massima di Ercole invitto, edificata secondo la tradizione da Evandro dopo che Ercole ebbe ucciso il gigante Caco, e che assunse la sua conformazione definitiva con una ricostruzione nel II secolo a.C. Alla metà del IV secolo d.C. venne edificata immediatamente ad ovest dell'Ara massima e ad essa adiacente un'aula porticata, posta su un podio e delimitata da arcate poggianti su colonne; essa era molto probabilmente priva di copertura in quanto sarebbe risultata molto costosa a causa della notevole altezza delle pareti (18 metri), nonché soggetta agli incendi che avrebbe potuto appiccare il fuoco dei sacrifici del santuario attiguo; secondo altri studi, invece, la presenza di stucchi al suo interno avrebbe necessariamente richiesto la presenza di un tetto.

    PRESENTAZIONE Lo scopo della presente pubblicazione, non riguarda principalmente la conoscenza del mosaico, della sua tecnica e dei capolavori a cui essa ha dato vita, ma è quello di guidare il lettore a confrontarsi con alcune opere per ascoltarne la voce, apprezzarne la bellezza e accogliere il messaggio di cui esse sono tramite. Non si riflette mai abbastanza sul fatto che, a fondamento di ciò che noi siamo – personalità, formazione, sensibilità, cultura – si trova l’esperienza, vale a dire l’incontro con qualcuno o con qualcosa che investe la sfera del nostro essere e la modifica profondamente. L’arte entra decisamente nell’esperienza personale di ciascuno e contribuisce a darle forma e ad orientarla. Pur senza fare riferimenti all’indagine filosofica, non si può non essere d’accordo con l’affermazione secondo cui l’arte è «una forma di arricchimento, intensificazione e ampliamento dell'esperienza comune»1. Essa crea un’esperienza di senso che restituisce significati, orienta alla verità, induce al pensiero del buono. Tutto ciò è ancora più vero in relazione alla cosiddetta arte cristiana, ma sarebbe meglio dire dell’arte a servizio dell’incontro con Gesù Cristo. Alla base dell’esperienza cristiana, infatti, si trova la dinamica del vedere. Bastino due citazioni, entrambe tratte dagli scritti dell’apostolo Giovanni. Nel Prologo del suo Vangelo, Giovanni afferma: «Il Verbo si fece carne e venne ad abitare in mezzo a noi; e noi vedemmo la sua gloria» (Gv 1,14); parimenti nella sua Prima Lettera, proclama che «la vita si è fatta visibile, noi l’abbiamo veduta e di ciò rendiamo testimonianza» (1 Gv 1,1-2).

    San Clemente al Laterano Excavations The site of the basilica has a history that goes back to the Republican era of Ancient Rome. The building underwent multiple transformations, the latest of which took place in the early 12th century. After excavations were done by Irish Dominicans, these changes can be seen through the layers of construction underneath the present-day building. Each layer stems from a different time period and shows how Christianity had a growing influence on Roman life and culture. [2] The entrance to the excavations is through the shop, where you also pay the fee. They are extensive, interesting and well described in the many signs down there, so it's worth the money. Especially, signs by the frescoes provide explanations for them -although buying a guidebook is still a good idea. [1] The access staircase to the right of where you pay, which displays many fragments of sculpture, emerges at the right hand end of the narthex or entrance porch of the old church. From there, you can enter three zones separated by walls formed by blocking up the original arcades. These divide the area into the central nave (which is unequally divided by a third foundational wall), the right hand aisle and the left hand aisle. At the end of the latter is the staircase down to the next level, the ancient Roman remains. Needless to say, the vaults and the brick piers are modern. 4th century church The church was built into and above a large Roman building, and oversailed a narrow alleyway and the remains of the house-church of Flavius Clemens.

La blasonatura ufficiale è la seguente: «Scudo di forma appuntato di rosso alla croce bizantina posta in capo a destra, seguita dalle lettere maiuscole S.P.Q.R. poste in banda e scalinate, il tutto d'oro.» La Bandiera LAZIO Regione Lazio mod. 1995 in uso Bandiera approntata nel 1995 e mai resa ufficiale, copia fedele del gonfalone adottato insieme allo stemma con legge regionale del 17 settembre 1984 (emendata l'8 gennaio 1986). Il modello originario aveva, come il gonfalone, un bordo blu scuro e la scritta "Regione Lazio" su due righe. La bandiera effettivamente in uso non ha il bordo e la scritta è su una sola linea. L'emblema, di forma ottagonale, reca i colori nazionali e gli stemmi delle cinque province laziali: al centro Roma, in alto Frosinone e Latina, in basso Rieti e Viterbo. Ai lati dell'ottagono, spighe di grano e un ramo di quercia, in alto una corona molto peculiare ROMA Bandiera di Roma, rosso porpora e giallo ocra, colori di antica origine bizantina, con o senza stemma.
