Einer „der größten britischen Songwriter der letzten 30 Jahre“ (BBC) wird Deutschland im Mai 2020 für vier Konzerte in Hamburg, Berlin, Köln und Frankfurt beehren und eine Kollektion aus seinem schier unerschöpflichen Fundus an grandiosen Songs präsentieren. Doch es sind nicht nur die Songs, die Paul Weller „neben David Bowie zu der weit verzweigtesten, langanhaltendsten und stets nach vorne blickenden Karriere“ (The Daily Telegraph) verhalf. Es ist auch seine Meinungsstärke, seine klare politische Positionierung sowie seine Neugier darauf, immer wieder neue musikalische Felder zu erschließen. Ob mit seiner New Wave-/Mod-Band The Jam, mit der er zwischen 1976 und 1982 ein kraftvolles, musikalisch anspruchsvolles Gegengewicht zum parallel aufkeimenden Punkrock anbot; ob mit The Style Council, mit denen er die restlichen 80er-Jahre über die wohl wertvollste Version eines 80er-Edelpop manifestierte; oder ob als Solokünstler, als der er in den vergangenen drei Jahrzehnten nicht weniger als 19 Alben in den britischen Top Ten platzieren konnte, von denen es ganze 12 sogar unter die Top 3 schafften: Stets ging es Paul Weller nicht in erster Instanz darum, Hits abzuliefern, sondern sich und sein Songwriting immer wieder neu zu entdecken. Dass er dabei mehrfach neue Trends und Strömungen initiierte – etwa auch, als er 1996 mit dem Album „Heavy Soul“ eine Rückkehr zu rohen, direkten Aufnahmen ohne Overdubs und technische Tricks einläutete, ein Trend, der beispielsweise den Weg für das Garagerock-Revival Ende der 90er anbahnte und letztlich bis heute anhält –, muss man dabei als wunderbaren Nebeneffekt beschreiben. Der 1958 in Surrey geborene Sohn eines Taxifahrers und einer Putzfrau wusste schon früh, dass Musik für ihn zum Lebensinhalt werden wird, ja muss. Bereits mit 14 Jahren gründete er die erste Inkarnation seiner Band The Jam, die ein atemberaubend intensives Revival der Mod-Kultur einläutete, die seinerzeit durch The Whos „Quadrophenia“ seinen Anfang genommen hatte. The Jam gerieten zum musikalisch anspruchsvolleren, stilistisch breiter aufgestellten Gegengewicht zu den wütenden neuen Punkbands wie The Sex Pistols oder The Damned. Das druckvolle Trio galt schnell als perfekte Mischung aus Eruption und großem Songwriting, britischer Kultur und kosmopolitischer Offenheit, Wut und Eleganz. Gerade die Eleganz nahm Weller nach der Trennung von The Jam mit in seine nächste Band, The Style Council. Bis heute gilt die Formation rund um Weller und den Pianisten Mick Talbot als die geschmackvollste, edelste, sowohl anspruchsvollste als auch hitverdächtigste Version, die die britische Popmusik zu bieten hat. Überdies waren The Style Council mit dafür verantwortlich, dass sich Popmusik immer mehr auch anderen Stilistiken wie Funk, Soul, Jazz und vereinzelt FKP Scorpio Konzertproduktionen GmbH Große Elbstr. 277 a ∙ 22767 Hamburg Tel. Gerade aufgrund dieser elektronischen Einflüsse brachen The Style Council letztlich auseinander, nachdem sich ihr Plattenlabel weigerte, das stark von der Housemusic beeinflusste, fünfte Album „Modernism: A New Decade“ zu veröffentlichen. Paul Weller und seine über die Jahre zum offenen Kollektiv gewachsene Formation waren damit der Zeit einfach zwei Jahrzehnte voraus und die Musikindustrie zu konservativ, um diese Platte zu verstehen. Seither verzaubert Paul Weller als Solokünstler mit einem Album nach dem nächsten, und dies im Schnitt fast im Jahresrhythmus. Nicht alle sind dabei neue Studioalben – es gibt unter seinen Veröffentlichungen spannende Live- und Cover- Alben, Film-Soundtracks und Retrospektiven mit neu eingespielten Versionen alter Jam- und Style Council-Klassiker. Dass er daneben zu einem der mitreißendsten Livemusiker Großbritanniens zählt, der bereits 2006 den BRIT Award für seine „Outstanding Contribution to British Music“ - und damit die höchste Ehrung der englischen Musikbranche – verliehen bekam, beweist der unermüdliche Mann und herausragende Impresario an der E-Gitarre immer wieder aufs Neue. Man kann wirklich versprechen: Ein Konzert von und mit Paul Weller ist eines dieser Live- Ereignisse, das man niemals vergisst.
