Missouri Valley Special Collections: Biography Goodman and Jane Ace Radio Personalities Goodman (1899-1982); Jane (1905-1974) by Dory DeAngelo Jane and Goodman Ace were partners in creating laughter. The team started a local daily radio show in 1930 that was so successful that it was picked up by CBS and NBC and broadcast across the country. Goodman moved on to become one of the highest paid comedy writers for many of the big name stars of radio and television. Goodman Ace was born in Kansas City. He attended Northeast and Central High School and went on to study journalism at the Kansas City Junior College. He got a 20-dollar-a-week job as a cub reporter at the Kansas City Post. He was eventually given a daily column to write and inserted jokes to attract readers. Jane Ace was born in Kansas City and also attended Central High. Her sense of humor matched the older Goodman’s, and she was to play a key role in their success in comedy. The couple’s future began while Goodman was doing a 15-minute radio version of his newspaper column on KMBC radio. Fate stepped in when the performers scheduled to follow him failed to show up. To fill the airtime, he called in Jane, who was waiting in the audience. Together, they ad-libbed a discussion about a humorous bridge game that they had played. Listeners liked it and called the station wanting more. “Easy Aces” was born, and the two married in 1928. The star of the show was really Jane, whose spontaneous speech mangled common expressions and made people laugh. In 1931 they were offered $500 a week to move to Chicago and go nationwide on CBS. The following year, NBC made a bigger offer, and the couple moved to New York. “Easy Aces” ran for almost 20 years. Goodman started writing for big-name radio stars including Ed Wynn, Jack Benny, and Abbott and Costello in the mid-1940s. MICHAEL ALLAN ZINBERG SUMMER 2014 Michael Zinberg is a Director, Writer and Producer of prime-time television dramas, comedies and movies. Moving to Los Angeles in the summer of 1968, he began his award-winning career as an usher at CBS-Television City, and as a writer and production assistant. He soon became Associate Producer of NICHOLS, starring James Garner. He then joined the Mary Tyler Moore (MTM) Company (72), where he wrote, produced and directed The Bob Newhart Show (Six Seasons) and worked on MTM’s other series, including the Mary Tyler Moore Show. From MTM he took his first turn at NBC as VP Program Development (79-81), bringing Hill Street Blues, and Cheers to air. Later, as President NBC-P (93-95), he supervised Homicide, JAG and all NBC Late Night programming. His time at the Network gave him unique insight as a Writer and Creator-Producer, but he always saw himself primarily a Director. His Directing career includes shows in every format, many of which he wrote and produced. Among them, Newhart, WKRP in Cincinnati, Family Ties, Taxi, The Yellow Rose, Til I Kissed Ya (MOW), Cold Steel & Neon, The Practice, Everybody Loves Raymond, Midnight Caller, Gilmore Girls, NCIS, LOST, Rizzoli & Isles, Private Practice, The Unit, Lie To Me, NCIS New Orleans, The Michael Fox Show, The Blacklist and The Good Wife. He received the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directing in Television Drama for the Viet Nam Trilogy of QUANTUM LEAP, a series he also Executive Produced. A four time Emmy nominee, he received The Lifetime Achievement Award from The Caucus of Writers, Producers and Directors.

SKLANSKJy Provoked by the ugliness of Proposition 187 - California's recent anti-immigration initiative - the ghosts of at least three fully documented Americans could be excused for returning briefly to say "I told you so." One is James Madison, who fa- mously warned against forms of democracy that fail to check popular prejudices and resentments.' A second is Fred Allen, who somewhat less famously dismissed California as "a wonder- ful place to live - if you happen to be an orange."'2 The third is James Bradley Thayer, the least familiar of the three today, but arguably the most influential law professor in American history. His grounds for claiming vindication are the subject of this essay. I. But first some background. Thayer taught at Harvard Law School from 1874 until his death in 1902.3 This was a formative period in American legal education.
