My goals in exploring performative and performing vaginas are many. I not only lay out how, why, and in what ways the “normal” and “abled” female body established in both dominant and mainstream discourses is, simply put, one with a specific type of vagina, but I also confront the “truth” that vaginas purport to tell about women and femininity. Ultimately, I maintain that representations of vaginas and the debates and discourses that surround them tell us something about our culture’s fears, anxieties, and hopes. Living life as abject can be painful, even unbearable, yet as individuals negotiate this life they can experience pleasure, assert agency, and express ethical and just visions of the world. The artists, writers, and performers explored in this dissertation strategically perform vaginas in multiple and disparate ways. As they trouble, resist, and negotiate “normative” understandings of vaginas, they simultaneously declare that the “problem” is not about bodies at all. The problem is not the vagina.

This is a MANDATE: According to SB 2128, every public or charter school “that offers a comprehensive sexual health education curriculum [which is the overwhelming majority of schools in MA] shall provide medically accurate, age-appropriate… education.” SB 2128 Section 1 (pg. 3, lines 37-39) (emphasis added) “Age appropriate” is vaguely defined to include the “developing cognitive, emotional and behavior capacity typical for the age or age group.” SB 2128 Section 1 (pg. 2, lines 29-31). “Medically accurate,” teachings need only be “supported by peer-reviewed research” and “if relevant, published in peer-reviewed journals.” SB 2128 Section 1 (pp. 2-3, lines 33-36) 2.     13 Of Dolls and Men: Anticipating Sexual Intimacy with Robots NORMAN MAKOTO SU, Indiana University Bloomington AMANDA LAZAR, University of Maryland JEFFREY BARDZELL and SHAOWEN BARDZELL, Indiana University Bloomington Sex and intimate technologies are important in people’s everyday lives. A class of technologies that is becoming increasingly more prominent in discussions of the future are sex robots. In this article, we present a qualitative analysis of posts from a forum where people describe their interactions with sex dolls and their motivations for using them through text and photographs. Forum users use dolls as a content authoring interface, imbue them with agency, and construct meaningful sexual relationships with them. Implications for the design of future robots and autonomous agents in humans’ everyday lives are discussed. We highlight that sex dolls are used for more than just sex; they provide fertile ground for embodied fictions and care of the self. Future, customizable technologies for sexual intimacy and wellness should account for this use.
