CL, no. 1259, February 2008, p. 117, n. 2 VP4713 The Haarlem painter Frans Post occupies a unique position in Dutch seventeenth-century art. The first professionally trained European artist to paint the landscape of the New World, as far as we know, he devoted his entire production to views of Brazil. In 1630, the Dutch seized control of the Portuguese settlement in north-eastern Brazil. The young Prince Johan Maurits of Nassau-Siegen (1604-1679) was appointed Governor General of the new territory and charged with establishing a secure footing for the Dutch West India Company. On 25 October 1636, he set sail for South America accompanied by a team of artists and scientists, including the landscapist Frans Post and the figure painter Albert Eckhout (c. 1610-1665). The expedition arrived at Recife in January the following year. Post remained there for seven years, during which time he made a visual record of the flora and fauna, as well as the topography of the region, before returning to the Netherlands in 1644. Yet of the many paintings and drawings made during his South American sojourn, only seven paintings and a sketchbook, preserved in the Scheepvaart Museum, in Amsterdam, survive today. -

ESTUDOS BOTÂNICOS NO BRASIL NASSOVIANO: O HERBÁRIO DE MARCGRAVE E SUAS CONTRIBUIÇÕES PARA A DIFUSÃO DO CONHECIMENTO Botanical studies in Nassovian Brazil: Marcgrave's herbarium and its contributions to the dissemination of knowledge Bárbara Martins Lopes1 Roniere dos Santos Fenner2 Maria do Rocio Fontoura Teixeira3 Resumo: O presente artigo pretende revisitar o contexto histórico dos estudos botânicos, no período holandês, no século XVII, em Pernambuco, feitos especialmente por George Marcgrave, e a importância do herbário de sua autoria. Como procedimentos metodológicos, utilizou-se a pesquisa descritiva e documental, com coleta de dados a partir da documentação do acervo da Biblioteca do Instituto Ricardo Brennand, da coleção da Revista do Instituto Arqueológico e Histórico de Pernambuco, da Revista do Museu Paulista, da Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações da Capes, do Google Acadêmico e do acervo da Academia Pernambucana de Ciência Agronômica. Os resultados levaram a refletir acerca da prática científica do botânico George Marcgrave, cujos estudos continuam importantes, com destaque para o herbário por ele organizado, pioneiro por se tratar da primeira coleção de objetos naturais com finalidade científica, bem como sua relevância para o ensino de ciências na atualidade. Abstract: This article aims to revisit the historical context of botanical studies, in the Dutch period, in the 17th century, in Pernambuco, made especially by George Marcgrave, and the importance of herbarium. Signature: ………………………………………………………….. 1 Abstract In this paper, I discuss the interrelation between scientism and imperialism, as it plays out in three milestone travelogues written on China in the 17th and 18th centuries; namely, the travelogues of Johan Nieuhof (1669), Lord George Macartney (1797), and Andreas Everard van braam Houckgeest (1798). Understanding the lasting significance of these texts, I argue, requires placing them – and by extension the embassies which originated them – in context of the burgeoning scientific ideology of their era. To do this, I will first introduce my key texts, and argue for why I believe they can be considered sites of inquiry into the impact of scientific ideology upon Western European conceptions of China. Then I will discuss in more detail my theoretical framework, its derivation, my exegetical methodology, and my justifications for making such an analysis of Nieuhof, Macartney, and Houckgeest. Then, to set the stage for the close readings to come, I will consider the comparative levels of scientific and technological sophistication in Western Europe and China during the long 18th century, as well as the current state of this academic discourse itself, by reviewing various essential works on the subject. -

This process not only prompted new production of maps, but also disseminated a large amount of geographical knowledge about China in massive publications. This has enriched the geographical vision of Chinese civilization while providing a new intellectual framework for Europeans to understand China. Concurrently, it has formed another route for the travel of knowledge and intercultural interactions between the East and the West. Those interactions between space and knowledge have been reflected in the production, publication and dissemination of numerous maps of China in early modern Europe. Keywords: map of China; the Jesuits; early modern Europe; travel of knowledge Throughout the cultural exchanges that took between China and the West during the 17th and 18th centuries, maps represented not only the coalescence and conjuncture of spatial information over time, but also their function, as basic vessels for circulating and disseminating knowledge. By the end of the 16th century, with the help of maps, Michele Ruggieri (Luo Mingjian 㖻᱄) and Matteo Ricci (Li Madou ⪠ヽ) had already contacted with Chinese literati and officialdom (Gernet, 1985: 15). -

The wilderness of Allaert van Everdingen Experience and representation of the north in the age of the baroque !"!#$#% &'(")*&")* In the year 1644, a young and up-coming Dutch artist, Allaert van Ever- dingen, was shipwrecked o+ the south coast of Norway. According to Arnold Houbraken’s retelling of the incident in De groote schouburgh der Nederlantsche konstschilders en schilderessen (The Great Theatre of Dutch Painters) from 1718,, the young man was saved, supposedly with his draw- ing materials, and for a few months he travelled in this part of the world, depicting the nature and landscapes of southern Norway and western Sweden. The anecdote of the shipwreck and the subsequent whereabouts of the artist have never been fully clari-ed. Navigation fraught with danger and risk-taking—not to mention potential fortune—was of course one of the many thrilling tales of adventurers and entrepreneurs of the time, but unfortunately, no travel diary has been found and supporting sources have been generally faulty.. All the same, the assumption among scholars today is that Allaert van Everdingen, born in Alkmaar in 1621 and trained as a marine artist in Utrecht and Haarlem, at the age of twenty-three hopped on one of the many Dutch timber traders bound for Scandina- vian and Baltic coastal towns./ Shipwrecked or not, there is now little doubt that he visited Risør and Langesund in Norway, important staple towns for timber, as well as the mountainous Telemark region nearby. Furthermore, he found his way to the newly constructed port city of Gothenburg in Sweden. He explored the city’s immediate surroundings, including the waterfall and mills at Mölndal, and likely followed the course of the nearby river Göta älv, reaching at least as far as the waterfalls at Trollhättan. -

Door de ontwikkeling van nieuwe genres als landschappen, zeegezichten en stillevens werd een nieuwe markt van belangstellenden aangeboord. Door de verschillende manieren van het aan de man brengen van kunst werden volop mogelijkheden gecreëerd om een schilderij aan te schaffen. Wie geld genoeg had om de "volle prijs" te betalen, kon bijvoorbeeld bij kunstwinkels terecht en wie weinig geld te verteren had, kon een gokje wagen om via een loterij een schilderij te vergaren. Ook bij de schilder thuis konden vaak schilderijen worden aangeschaft. -

CHAPTER SEVEN DWELLING FACTORS: WESTERN MERCHANTS IN CANTON Johnathan Farris Canton (Guangzhou), China, witnessed the earliest and longest settlement of English speaking Westerners in China. China confronted Westerners with an ancient governmentally integrated state that into the nineteenth century would have trade on its own terms. By Chinese Imperial decree, foreign residence was restricted to a set of buildings on the banks of the Pearl (Zhujiang) River known as the Shisan Hang, or Thirteen Factories. The factories initially reflected the utilitarian design of the surrounding Chinese merchants’ business premises (hang), and were in fact owned by the Chinese monopolists who traded with the West. Despite Chinese restrictions, however, Western merchants were not going to ignore the potential fortunes to be made there. The factories and their surrounding urban fabric soon adjusted in a number of ways, some small and some more profound, to accommodate the Western merchants, their social usages, and their aspirations. While foreign merchants became increas- ingly common and their residency prolonged during the latter life of the Thirteen Factories, their buildings continued to be at risk, either from accidental fire or intentional assault. While the first Westerners to arrive in southeast China were the Portu- guese who settled in Macau in the sixteenth century, the traditional hub of trade in the region was Canton, at the expansion of the Pearl River into a great delta. Other Western merchant nationalities began appearing in Canton regularly in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century, with the French East India Company and the British East India Company each sending a couple of ships a year between 1699 and 1714.1 Trade through- out the early eighteenth century was intermittent, and Dutch and English ships in particular attempted trade at various locations along the South China Coast. -

Europe Meets China—China Meets Europe originated in an international sym- posium that aimed to explore the cultural conditions and psychological inter- actions that shaped the early modern Sino-European scientific exchange as a human experience. The seven papers published here demonstrate the fruitful- ness of that heuristic. The papers form two clusters. Chapters one through four focus on several Jesuit missionaries and their Chinese partners. In Chapter One, Isaia Iannac- cone complicates the image of the Jesuits in China by contrasting the differ- ent modes of accommodation pursued by Nicolas Trigault (1577–1628) and Johannes Schreck-Terrentius (1576–1630). Trigault, best known for his Latin ad- aptation of Matteo Ricci’s (1552–1610) Italian journals, was a staunch defender of Ricci’s decision to allow the Chinese terms shangdi, tian, and tianzhu to be used as names for God in the internal Jesuit “terms controversy” that erupted in the 1620s. Although the controversy ended with a modest victory for the pro-Ricci faction, the intense debates drove him into depression and possibly led to his suicide in 1628. Terrentius, on the other hand, pioneered another kind of accommodation. He continued to identify himself primarily as the member of the Accademia dei Lincei and brilliant Renaissance scholar that he was before joining the Jesuit order. -

Hence the Dutch West India Company exported this tradition of tolerance to its New World colonies, most notably to Dutch Brazil.
