The Desktop (Overview)
The desktop (overview) The desktop is the main screen area that you see after you turn on your computer and log on to Windows. Like the top of an actual desk, it serves as a surface for your work. When you open programs or folders, they appear on the desktop. You can also put things on the desktop, such as files and folders, and arrange them however you want. The desktop is sometimes defined more broadly to include the taskbar and Windows Sidebar. The taskbar sits at the bottom of your screen. It shows you which programs are running and allows you to switch between them. It also contains the Start button , which you can use to access programs, folders, and computer settings. On the side of the screen, Sidebar contains small programs called gadgets. The desktop, taskbar, and Sidebar Where did my desktop go? Because programs run on top of the desktop, the desktop itself is often partially or completely hidden. But it's still there, underneath everything. To see the whole desktop without closing any of your open programs or windows, click the Show Desktop button on the taskbar. The desktop is revealed. Click the icon again to restore all of your windows to the way they were. Organizing Windows Desktop/Workspace Instructions Below are the different places in Windows that you may want to customize. On your lab computer, go ahead and set up the environment in different ways to see how you’d like to customize your work computer. Start Menu and Taskbar ● Size: Click on the Start Icon (bottom left). As you move your mouse to the edges of the Start Menu window, your mouse icon will change to the resize icons . Click and drag the mouse to the desired Start Menu size. ● Open Start Menu, and “Pin” apps to the Start Menu/Taskbar by finding them in the list, right-clicking the app, and select “Pin to Start” or “More-> “Pin to Taskbar” OR click and drag the icon to the Tiles section. ● Drop “Tiles” on top of each other to create folders of apps. ● Right-click on Tiles (for example the Weather Tile), and you can resize the Tile (maybe for apps you use more often), and also Turn On live tiles to get updates automatically in the Tile (not for all Tiles) ● Right-click applications in the Taskbar to view “jump lists” for certain applications, which can show recently used documents, visited websites, or other application options. ● If you prefer using the keyboard for opening apps, you probably won’t need to customize the start menu. Simply hit the Windows Key and start typing the name of the application to open, then hit enter when it is highlighted. As the same searches happen, the most used apps will show up as the first selection. -

How To: Citrix VDI—Opening and Closing In order to provide better and more efficient administration of the GIS Citrix environment, a new means of access is being implemented. Once this new process is in place, the current means of GIS Citrix access will no longer be available. Users can access multiple programs via the new Citrix VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure). In this exercise, direction will be provided to: 1) access the new Citrix VDI environment, 2) login to ArcFM, 3) retrieve a stored display, and 4) properly exit the system. Access Citrix VDI 1. Open an Internet Explorer window. 2. Type the following URL: http://citrix.cpsenergy.com 3. Select Enter on your keyboard. Note: Consider saving the URL as a favorite, such as “ GIS Citrix Receiver.” 4. When the Citrix application opens, select DESKTOPS from the top menu bar. 5. Click on Details to create the Prod VDI—Corp icon as a Favorite. 6. Click “Add to Favorites” then click “Open” to continue. 7. Use your NT username and password to sign in. The Prod VDI-Corp Desktop will then open and resemble the following image. 2 Notes: If your mouse pointer is not showing in the VDI screen, simply click into the area and the pointer will appear. If an MSN.com website loads, close it out. At the top of the Desktop is the XenDesktop toolbar. 8. Select and review the XenDesktop toolbar. A variety of tool tasks will appear. Select “Home” to minimize the VDI and return to the local desktop home screen. 3 Note: An initial DPI screen resolution setting is required for first time users. -
Tracker Helps You Mark the Steps but Does Not Limit Your Control Over Them
Tracker 6 Help Tracker is a free video analysis and modeling tool from Open Source Physics (OSP). Features include manual and automated object tracking with position, velocity and acceleration overlays and data, video filters, line profiles for analysis of spectra and interference patterns, and dynamic particle models for direct comparison with real-world videos. It is designed to be used in physics education but is also widely used in many other fields. To start using Tracker, see getting started. Getting Started When you first open Tracker it appears as shown below. Here's how to start analyzing a video: 1. Open a video or tracker file. 2. Identify the frames ("video clip") you wish to analyze. 3. Calibrate the video scale. 4. Set the reference frame origin and angle. 5. Track objects of interest with the mouse. 6. Plot and analyze the tracks. 7. Save your work in a tracker file. 8. Export track data to a spreadsheet. 9. Print, save or copy/paste images for reports. Note that the order of the buttons on the toolbar mirrors the steps used to analyze a video. For more information about Tracker's user interface, including user customization, see user interface. 1. Open a video or tracker file To open a local video, tracker tab (.trk), or tracker project (.trz) file, click the Open button or File|Open File menu item and select the file with the chooser, or drag and drop the file onto Tracker. 32 The Three-Dimensional User Interface Hou Wenjun Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications China 1. Introduction This chapter introduced the three-dimensional user interface (3D UI). With the emergence of Virtual Environment (VE), augmented reality, pervasive computing, and other "desktop disengage" technology, 3D UI is constantly exploiting an important area. However, for most users, the 3D UI based on desktop is still a part that can not be ignored. This chapter interprets what is 3D UI, the importance of 3D UI and analyses some 3D UI application. At the same time, according to human-computer interaction strategy and research methods and conclusions of WIMP, it focus on desktop 3D UI, sums up some design principles of 3D UI. From the principle of spatial perception of people, spatial cognition, this chapter explained the depth clues and other theoretical knowledge, and introduced Hierarchical Semantic model of “UE”, Scenario-based User Behavior Model and Screen Layout for Information Minimization which can instruct the design and development of 3D UI. This chapter focuses on basic elements of 3D Interaction Behavior: Manipulation, Navigation, and System Control. It described in 3D UI, how to use manipulate the virtual objects effectively by using Manipulation which is the most fundamental task, how to reduce the user's cognitive load and enhance the user's space knowledge in use of exploration technology by using navigation, and how to issue an order and how to request the system for the implementation of a specific function and how to change the system status or change the interactive pattern by using System Control. -
