(AP) Sports Latest sports scores at — http://sports.arabtimesonline.com DE GRASSE FINALLY GETS HIS GOLD, KORIR LEADS KENYAN ONE-TWO FINISH Syrian weightlifter wins bronze Talakhadze breaks records; Yosozumi solidifies Japan dominance as Romashina claims record title TOKYO, Aug 4, (AP): Man Asaad of Syria took the bronze with a total 424kg for his country’s first med- al since its civil war began a decade ago. Syria’s last Olympic medal in any sport was a boxing bronze in 2004. “The medal means a lot to me and a lot to my country, Syria,” Asaad said through an interpreter. Lasha Talakhadze pumped every- one up with three world records on the final day of Olympic competition in weightlifting. The defending champion from Georgia lifted 223 kilograms in the snatch and 265kg in the clean and jerk for a total 488kg on Wednesday. All three figures broke his own world re- cords in the over-109kg men’s super- heavyweight category. Ali Davoudi of Iran was left in sec- ond place by the vast margin of 47kg. Even Talakhadze’s starting lifts were more than anyone else attempt- ed, which meant he had to lift three times back-to-back in each half of the competition. Talakhadze immediately pledged to return for a third Olympic gold in 2024, and his feat in Tokyo raised the question of whether he could be- come the first man to lift the once undreamed-of total of 500kg.

The eighth competition day of the 16th FINA World Championships promises a wealth of positive emotions: the world's best athletes will compete for two sets of medals, in diving and synchronised swimming. This day will start at 10:00 with the women's preliminary round in the 3m springboard event at the Aquatics Palace. At 15:00, the semifinals for this competition will take place. A set of medals will be contested in the men’s 3m springboard event. Chinese athlete Cao Yuan is worthy of attention. He failed his first dive in the semifinal series, but then performed absolutely flawlessly, and received the highest score from the judges. Second place went to He Chao, also from China. Third place went to London Olympic champion, Ilia Zakharov, from Russia. It is therefore likely that competition will take place between these three. As we reported earlier, Cao Yuan paired with Qin Kai became world champion in the synchronised diving event. "I am very happy and excited at the same time, because this is my first World Championships. I am very grateful to my partner Kai Qin for the support he has given me during this whole time. He gave me the support I needed to relax and give my 100% despite the intense competition," Cao Yuan said to reporters.
