Syria’s last Olympic medal in any sport was a boxing bronze in 2004. “The medal means a lot to me and a lot to my country, Syria,” Asaad said through an interpreter. Lasha Talakhadze pumped every- one up with three world records on the final day of Olympic competition in weightlifting. The defending champion from Georgia lifted 223 kilograms in the snatch and 265kg in the clean and jerk for a total 488kg on Wednesday. All three figures broke his own world re- cords in the over-109kg men’s super- heavyweight category. Ali Davoudi of Iran was left in sec- ond place by the vast margin of 47kg. Even Talakhadze’s starting lifts were more than anyone else attempt- ed, which meant he had to lift three times back-to-back in each half of the competition. Talakhadze immediately pledged to return for a third Olympic gold in 2024, and his feat in Tokyo raised the question of whether he could be- come the first man to lift the once undreamed-of total of 500kg. This study aims to analyse the relationships between body composition, limb length and barbell kinematics in the performance of weightlifters. It consists of an observational and descriptive study of 19 athletes (12 men [28.50 ± 6.37 years old; 84.58 ± 14.11 kg; 176.18 ± 6.85 cm] and 7 women [27.71 ± 6.34 years old; 64.41 ± 7.63 kg; 166.94 ± 4.11 cm]) who met the inclusion criteria. A level I anthropometrist took anthropometric measures according to the methodology of the International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry (ISAK), and the measurement of the barbell velocity was made with the software Kinovea. In terms of body composition, both genders are within the percentage range of fat mass recommended for this sport.

  • INSIDE This Issue: Message from the Chair, RTIRN Board Update on RTIRN Projects Funded by Introduction to New RTIRN Board Members World Bank Professor Dr
April/May 2009 Road Traffic Injuriesj ResearchResearch NetworkNetwork road research The Newsletter of the Road Traffic Injuries Research Network Message from the RTIRN Board Dear colleagues Welcome to another issue of Road Research. This issue importantly highlights the significant activities that are being undertaken by Network Partners, supported by our key funders, the World Bank’s Global Road Safety Facility. Without this support the Network would not be in a position to provide funds for our key outreach activities, namely the multicentre study, the fellowships for both junior and senior researchers, and to be announced later in the year, conference scholarships. We take this opportunity to congratulate the three recipients of our awards for senior researchers: Dr Clotilde Ubeda, from Argentina; Dr Rafael Consunji from the Philippines; and Dr Hamid Soori from Iran. As outlined later in this issue, each will spend time with a partner organization gaining further skills and experience that they will take back to their home countries at the completion of their sabbaticals. I would also like to welcome our new Board members: Professor Alfredo Celis from Mexico, Professor Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah from Malaysia. As Partners would appreciate, Board members play a key role in the Network – with no reimbursement for their time – so we very much appreciate both their commitment and indirectly the support of their institutions in allowing them to take on this role. Lastly I would like to formally record our farewell and thanks to Maria Ali, who as you will all know has worked with the Secretariat in Pakistan since its establishment.
