Noble In Luke’s account of the resurrection, it is women, Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women who take the message of the empty tomb to the apostles (24:10).1 The Old and New Testaments provide other witnesses to women’s involvement in a variety of ministries; the roles for women in the church through time have been equally as varied. Regardless of the official position of the church regarding their roles, women have remained integral to continuation of our faith. Historical restrictions on the involvement of women have been justified both scripturally and theologically; arguments supporting their involvement find the same bases. Even women who stand out in history often did not challenge the practices of their times that confined women to home, family, or the convent. For example, Hildegard of Bingen is considered a model of piety and while she demonstrated courage in her refusal to bend to the demands of clergy, she was not an advocate of change or of elevation of women’s authority in the church. Patristic attitudes have deep roots in the Judeo-Christian traditions and continue to affect contemporary avenues of ministry available to women. Barriers for women in America began falling in the nineteenth century as women moved to increasingly visible activities outside the home. However, women’s ascent into leadership roles in the church that matched the roles of men was much slower than in secular areas. -

Holiness Churches - Introduction • In historical perspective, the Pentecostal movement was the child of the Holiness movement, which in turn was a child of Methodism. • Methodism began in the 1700s on account of the teachings of John and Charles Wesley. One of their most distinguishing beliefs was a distinction they made between ordinary and sanctified Christians. • Sanctification was thought of as a second work of grace which perfected the Christian. Also, Methodists were generally more emotional and less formal in their worship. – We believe that God calls every believer to holiness that rises out of His character. We understand it to begin in the new birth, include a second work of grace that empowers, purifies and fills each person with the Holy Spirit, and continue in a lifelong pursuit. ―Core Values, Bible Methodist Connection of Churches • By the late 1800s most Methodists had become quite secularized and they no longer emphasized their distinctive doctrines. At this time, the "Holiness movement" began. • It attempted to return the church to its historic beliefs and practices. Theologian Charles Finney was one of the leaders in this movement. When it became evident that the reformers were not going to be able to change the church, they began to form various "holiness" sects. • These sects attempted to return to true Wesleyan doctrine. Among the most important of these sects were the Nazarene church and the Salvation Army. -

Okies, the dominant narrative goes, failed to organize in the ways that Mexican farm workers did, developed little connection with Mexican or Filipino farm workers, and clung to traditional gender roles that valorized the male breadwinner. -

A fully organized church should be: v Self-Governing v Self-Sustaining v Self-Propagating 2 Introduction to the Church of the Nazarene Early Church History Let me tell you a little about the history of the Church of the Nazarene and several key people who were responsible for the beginning of our denomination. v To do that though, we need to see it in the context of the history of Christianity The Christian Church as we know it today came into being in the first half of the First Century, following the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. v Within 300 years following the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, the Christian Movement was the most powerful force in the Roman world. Ø In the year 323, Christianity became the official religion of the empire. 3 Middle Age Church History During the Middle Ages, several reform movements developed. v In the 16th Century, the Protestant Reformation, lead by Martin Luther and others, gave birth to many of the great denominations we know today. v In the early 18th Century, the Evangelical Revival occurred in England, led mainly by the ministry of John and Charles Wesley. -

Aron, Chair This dissertation follows the fluid and dynamic movements of holiness and pentecostal worshipers who crossed boundaries of race, gender, language, and region at the end of the nineteenth century and beginning of the twentieth century. It demonstrates how the changeable, decentralized, and anti-institutional character of the holiness-pentecostal movement allowed for both radical social behavior and dynamic geographic mobility. The movement was in a constant state of flux as the sanctified traveled across the continent, as holiness ideas circulated amidst an explosion of print culture, and as worshipers moved in and out of socially transgressive practices. By the early twentieth century an expansive network of holiness and pentecostal folk, tied together by railroads and holiness newspapers, sprawled across the United States. The American holiness-pentecostal movement had flowed from the homes of Northern social reformers in the !ii 1840s, to black sharecroppers in the Mississippi Delta and white cotton farmers in East Texas after Reconstruction, and finally to the West at the turn of the century. Popular depictions of Los Angeles on the brink of the Azusa Street Revival describe a seed about to sprout, a woman in labor, or a tree being transplanted. -

An Unholy Trinity: The Liberal, Charismatic, and Evangelical Movements in the Lutheran Church Today by Martin R. Basis of radio show on “Issues, etc.”, February 20, 2002; rebroadcast nationally on “Issues, etc.”, March 10, 2002. I. Introduction Anniversaries are designed to be times of remembrance. This year is the silver anniversary of the departure of the Liberal faction of the Lutheran Church— Missouri Synod in 1976 to form the Association of Evangelical Lutherans Churches, i.e., the AELC. It is time for members of the LC-MS to remember that history and to ask some deep questions about its impact on us today. What was going on in the Missouri Synod in 1976? The synod was on the verge of schism in the midst of a long and bloody ecclesiastical civil war.1 In April 1976, President J. A. O. Preus of the Missouri Synod removed four district presidents from office for ordaining Seminex graduates. In December 1976, the AELC, was organized, taking with it about 250 congregations of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.2 Eventually about 200,000 people left the Missouri Synod for the AELC,3 a little bit less than 10% of its lay membership. In his memoirs, Liberal leader John Tietjen observed that 1200 congregations were expected to leave the LC-MS, but only 250 did.4 If his calculations were correct, that means that nearly 950 LC-MS congregations and their ministers, i.e., about 16% of the total, remained in the synod organizationally but were loyal to the goals and ideals of the Seminex group, Evangelical Lutherans in Mission (ELIM), and the AELC. -

VIOLENCE AND THE SACRED IN NORTHERN IRELAND Duncan Morrow University of Ulster at Jordanstown For 25 years Northern Ireland has been a society characterized not so much by violence as by an endemic fear of violence. At a purely statistical level the risk of death as a result of political violence in Belfast was always between three and ten times less than the risk of murder in major cities of the United States. Likewise, the risk of death as the result of traffic accidents in Northern Ireland has been, on average, twice as high as the risk of death by political killing (Belfast Telegraph, 23 January 1994). Nevertheless, the tidal flow of fear about political violence, sometimes higher and sometimes lower but always present, has been the consistent fundamental backdrop to public, and often private, life. This preeminence of fear is triggered by past and present circumstances and is projected onto the vision of the future. The experience that disorder is ever close at hand has resulted in an endemic insecurity which gives rise to the increasingly conscious desire for a new order, for scapegoats and for resolution. For a considerable period of time, Northern Ireland has actively sought and made scapegoats but such actions have been ineffective in bringing about the desired resolution to the crisis. They have led instead to a continuous mimetic crisis of both temporal and spatial dimensions. To have lived in Northern Ireland is to have lived in that unresolved crisis. Liberal democracy has provided the universal transcendence of Northern Ireland's political models. Northern Ireland is physically and spiritually close to the heartland of liberal democracy: it is geographically bound by Britain and Ireland, economically linked to Western Europe, and historically tied to emigration to the United States, Canada, and the South Pacific. -
