    Cesar Legaspi (1917-1994) National Artist, Visual Arts 1990 One of the Thirteen Moderns Cesar Legaspi, honored as a National Artist in Visual Arts in 1990, is considered the pioneer of neo-realism in the Philippines. Aside from the monochromatic works in his early years, he exploited the full potential of color in his paintings. A proponent of modern art in the country, Legaspi developed cubism in the Philippine context. He was also identified as one of the Thirteen Moderns, a group of modernists led by Victorio C. Edades whose works went against the conservative academic art of that period. Legaspi was born to Manuel Legaspi and Rosario Torrente on April 2, 1917 in Tondo, Manila. He took up painting for one term at the University of the Philippines School of Fine Arts before he decided to take commercial art courses instead. There he received medals for perspective and illustration projects. He earned his Certificate of Proficiency in 1936, after which he continued his education in art under Pablo Amorsolo. He went to Madrid in 1953 and pursued Art Studies under a scholarship at the Cultura Hispanic until 1954. He also went to Paris to study at the Academie Ranson for one month under Henri Goetz. Back in the Philippines, he had his first one-man show at the Luz Gallery in 1963. While this led to an active phase with his major pieces, he also worked as a magazine illustrator and artistic director at an advertising agency. He finally left the agency in 1968 to focus on his painting.

    Back in the Netherlands after seventy years LEE MAN FONG Back in the Netherlands after seventy years The Chinese-Indonesian artist Lee Man Fong (1913-1988, also known as Lee Man-Fung) is very well known in South-east Asia. In the Netherlands, however, many people never heard about him, even though he lived in our country for several years. His exhibitions were met with much enthusiasm. Zeeland Auctioneers has auctioned many of his paintings already. All of this led us to offer the Dutch public a new introduction to Lee Man Fong by means of an exhibition. We also wish to acquire more information for our book on Lee Man Fong’s Dutch period. Zeeland Auctioneers has sold by auction all displayed paintings during the years 2007 – 2018. Most of these paintings were sold for surprisingly high prices. The highest result was reached in June 2017 with ‘The Eagle’: € 450.000 (hammer price), a world record for these typical tall, Chinese scroll-shaped paintings by this artist! This painting is a unique piece because of its multiple symbolic meaning. In Chinese metaphors, an eagle on a rock in the sea symbolizes a hero who fights a lone battle. Edades (1895-1985) Philippine National Artist Father of Modern Philippine Art This special post is dedicated to a great Filipino master who spent his retirement years with his family in Davao City from 1967 until he breath his last on 1985 at age 89. He was a Philippine National Artist, and co-founder of the Mindanao Ethnoculture Foundation that focused on the indigenous culture and heritage of Mindanao. He was Victorio C. Edades, "Father of Modern Philippine Art." Born on December 13, 1895 in Barrio Bolosan in Dagupan, Pangasinan, Victorio Edades was the youngest of ten children, six of whom died from smallpox epidemic shortly before the turn of the 20th century. Edades' artistry began at an early age. He obtained his early education in barrio schools and went to a high school in Lingayen, Pangasinan. By seventh grade, his teachers were so impressed with his talent that he was fondly named, "apprentice teacher" in his art class. He was very good in class from the very beginning, having earned several awards in school debates and writing competitions. University of Washington in Seattle, USA In 1919, after high school, Edades left for the United States to study arts. He initially worked in salmon canneries in Alaska and eventually moved to Seattle where he took up Architecture at the University of Washington and earned a Master of Fine Arts in Painting. It was also during his stay in the U.S. that he married American Jean Garrott, with whom he had his only daughter, Joan.

The work of art, therefore, becomes the work of the world, extensively and deeply conceived. By a comparison study between a traditional museum "De Tjolomadoe" and an imaginary of Soekarno's virtual museum was found the similarities and differences scheme. "De Tjolomadoe" as a traditional museum shows the giant machines artifacts as the iconic of museum collections, and the Soekarno's Virtual Museum shows the imaginary of postmodern architecture building to shows the maestro of artist paintings as the Soekarno's collections. Both traditionally and virtually created based on historical heritages. However, the virtual museum is the best solution to cut off the major construction budgets and rare museum collections. By a collaboration on multidisciplinary sciences, historical archives, architectural science, and digital application, a virtual museum as a video model of the imaginary museum building contained the historical archives that suitable for millennials as it is easy to access everywhere and anytime in the cyberspace. The paintings were mostly dismissed as the inadequate products of artists lacking in classical training. Willem Imandt (1882-1967), about whom little was known until recently, was one of the artists unjustly relegated to this poorly defined and unappreciated genre, which was most unfortunate as only a few years of his artistic development could in fact be categorised as Beautiful Indies. Just a small handful of his paintings found their way into museums, yet many of his pieces have fortunately been preserved in private collections. After our memorable trip to Iceland, where we found the ‘Awakening eagle’ by Lee Man Fong (€ 720.000 hp), we discovered other treasures. And again in unexpected places. The first one was ‘Balinese weaver’ by Lee Man Fong, which resided in Suriname, South America! Not long after that excitement, another adventure turned up. A Dutch family living in Spain for forty years already, invited us to appraise their art collection. We went there and stayed a few days in the 17th century cloister which they owned and had restored in the past. The owner of the collection, Mieke Onkenhout, is 98 years old now. Originally, she and her husband Bart lived in Laren, a famous village in the Netherlands that attracted important artists in the past. In a little pub they met many of these artists since the early 1950s. Her daughter Maaike told us about her parents: ‘Mieke, herself a painter of merit, became an intricate part of it all. Bart, a business man but poet at heart, enjoyed the pleasant, intense and intellectual atmosphere to be found over a drink. Worlds were discovered, ideas blossomed, discussions flourished; this was a world of wild ideas and bright colours; and inevitably the cost of ideas and canvasses outstripped the money available.
