Orchestral Incidental Music at the Movies – How 19th Century Orchestral Style was Alive & Well in Film Music of the 20th Century Presented by Max Morley, Spring 2017 Dr. Max Morley retired from the School of Music at Stephen F. Austin State University in 2010. He held three positions at SFA: 20 years as trumpet specialist; 15 years in Arts Programming and Development; and five years teaching music history and literature. He holds the degrees, Bachelor of Music (BM), Master of Music (MM), and Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA), from the University of North Texas. Did “classical” music composition disappear in the 20th century? My class will show how 19th century classical orchestral style was alive & well in the American movies of the 20th century. I will present a lecture-audio-visual program of orchestral incidental music in the movies from 1927 to the present. It will feature brief discussions of 30 composers and 90 orchestral excerpts from 60 films. Expect to hear high quality orchestral music that sounds familiar, but the title may elude you. See if you can name the movie’s title by viewing screen-shots and movie stars while identifying the music. Movie-buffs may expect to do well.
