FEATUREDFEATURED EVENTSEVENTS

OK Go - VIDEO RETROSPECTIVE (OPENING NIGHT) + Q&A with Damian Kulash + KEEPIN’ IT WEIRD SCREENING

Tues December 10th, 6:30pm & 7pm at Alamo Drafthouse - The Ritz Directors: Damian Kulash, Trish Sie, Kazuaki Seki, Aaron Duffy and Bob Partington

Essentially the creators of the viral music video, OK Go pioneered their craft in the YouTube age with their choreographed treadmill antics on an indie budget, forever tilting the scale of what popular music videos could be. Now making ambitious mini-movies of their own, OK Go having taken us through a Rube-Goldberg-machine, into zero-gravity, slow-motion, rally car races and many more places you wouldn’t have thought music videos could go.

Director and lead singer, Damian Kulash, joins us in-person for this screening followed by a Q&A session to discuss his body of work, pushing the boundaries of music videos and partnering with brands to execute the wildest of ideas.

Paired with AMVFest’s ever-intriguing “Keepin’ It Weird” screening, this showing will celebrate fellow weird music video ideas and is sure to keep you guessing.

Presented by KUTX 98.9 6 WILD CHILD - VIDEO RETROSPECTIVE + DUO PERFORMANCE + Q&A + LADY POWER SCREENING

Saturday December 14th, 3pm at Alamo Drafthouse - The Ritz Directors: Rob Wadleigh, Aaron Brown, Christian Sorensen Hansen, Jeremi Mattern, Ben Bloom, Matt Smukler

The darling duo of Alexander Beggins and Kelsey Wilson started Wild Child in a tour van, singing drunken love songs, beautifully lilting melodies with a juxtaposed lyrical bite of the modern cynical romance. This aesthetic bled into their visuals and live performances too, singing face to face; the push and pull of jilted lovers. Their first music videos for “Pillow Talk” and “Tale of You & Me” sparked further speculation that the duo was a couple, as their sordid tales of love, love lost and love killed played out on screen.

Having since amassed an impressive body of award worthy music video work (with long time directors Aaron Brown and Rob Wadleigh, amongst others), they’ve shown a dedication to the medium being at the forefront of GoPro 3D videos, nighttime drone footage alongside simple and intimate live performances, which they navigate so well. The Austin band has evolved sonically over the years, but heart-tugging music videos have remained a constant.

They will join us for a duo performance and Q&A after the video showcase.

Paired with our Lady Power screening - showcasing the strongest feminine affirming music videos of the fest - it’s sure to be an uplifting session.

SWEET SPIRIT vs. A GIANT DOG - VIDEO RETROSPECTIVE + DUO PERFORMANCE + Q&A + SEX, DRUGS, AND THE OCCULT SCREENING

Saturday, Dec 14th, 12pm at Alamo Drafthouse - The Ritz Directors: Ed Dougherty, John Valley, Daniel Ralston

Two of Austin’s most prolific couldn’t just front ONE band, so they front TWO bands. Sabrina Ellis and Andrew Cashen lead both Sweet Spirit and A Giant Dog and have put a high priority on the visual impact of each project. Sweet Spirit leaning a little more anthemic and grandiose (with sometimes 10+ members) and A Giant Dog playing into the grittier rock and roll lifestyle. As lead singers, they bring a bit of bombast to both and their music video performances certainly highlight this high energy.

Successfully pulling off live performance videos alongside more conceptual narrative pieces (told via puppetry, monster dance-offs or wrestling matches), across the two projects they have run the gamut on style, format and delivery of the music video medium.

After the video showcase, they’ll join us for Q&A followed by a rare duo performance, playing songs across their collective catalog.

Paired with the “Sex, Drugs and The Occult”, our most devious and devilish screening, this showcase will be sure to raise your pulse and have you amp’d to join our music video cult. ;)

AMVF alumni Walker Lukens will be DJ’ing throughout the night spinnin’ the right jams for a good ole’ get down. PANELS & WORKSHOPS + HORROR GALORE! GORE WORKSHOP + MEET THE COMMISSIONERS + THE POWER OF STORYTELLING across music videos, tv and film + ROOSTERTEETH Animating to Music

This year we’ve turned up and dialed in the programming for filmmakers and industry alike. We have major label video commissioners joining us, top tier directors, production teams and festival organizers discussing the craft and we’re digging our hands right into the bloody mess.

AMVF alum John Valley and Zach Scott will lead a horror film DIY workshop promising some blood squibs and other techniques for the renegade filmmaker.

Video commissioners play a pivotal role in the creative and production process, serving as the dot connector and facilitator across the many departments involved. We’ve brought Kevin Kloecker (Capitol Music Group), Jill Kaplan (Sony/Columbia) and Joseph Boyd (Atlantic) to the roundtable to talk about their unique skillset, production horror stories and some of their favorite magic music video moments.

Austin Film Festival joins us to copresent a panel discussing storytelling and the narrative form across music videos, film, TV and commercials. Filmmakers Peter Simonite and Erica Silverman, along with director/festival programmer Elizabeth Mims, and filmmaker /shaper of young minds PJ Raval all come together to bring their unique perspectives to storytelling in the modern visual medium.

An internet era Austin institution, Roosterteeth lift up the hood to show us how they pull together episodic intros, synced to music, from storyboard to coloring, essentially making animated music videos daily. Pulling someone from each department they take us down the creative assembly line to bring their epic visions to life. We’ll hear from composer David Levy, animation director Dustin Matthews, composite/UI Motion Graphics artist Autumn Elizondo, editor Richard Norman and writer/director Yssa Badiola.

12 Planet EARTHx - Screening

Thurs, December 12th, 6pm at Austin School of Film Directors: Various

In partnership with EARTHx, the international environmental nonprofit, film festival and conference, we are proud to again present these earthly works.

From around the world boat trips to epic storms, mirror seascapes and surreal landscapes, this screening showcases the majesty of our planet and its people. Grab a cocktail with a biodegrad- able straw (courtesy of EARTHx), appreciate the planet’s fragility and let soak in the need to tread lightly, reduce our consumption and cherish the time we have. It’s a beautiful world out there, let’s keep it that way.

13 NEW SCREENINGS: #MILLENNIALS, LGBTQuuuute, Sex Drugs & The Occult Directors: Various

Striving always to be reactive to the programming and cultural climate, AMVF saw a few new categories emerge this year. It’s a millennial world and we’re just millennial girls! Our shortest screening of the fest and straight to the point for the ADD generation; cellphones, fast cars, memes and youthful frustration all come of age together in the #MILLENNIALS screening. The LGBTQ+ community has always been represented at the festival, peppered throughout other screening but we saw so many strong, proud videos this year across the spectrum from heartfelt to comedic, we had to dedicate a screening to our queermunity. Now, sex, drugs and the occult is not NEW to our music video selections, but the outstanding set of devious videos, including orgies, cult leaders and white lines, warranted a screening all its own. Be sure to catch these new additions across the biggest and best screens in Austin, TX #AMVF5!!

AMVFAMVF AWARDAWARD NOMINEESNOMINEES

Video of the Year (2019 season) The coveted “best video” title goes to a work that can’t be mistaken as an outstanding combination of video and music. One would not be the same without the other. Really firing on every cylinder from direction and cinematography to concept and art direction, this video nails it on the head. To each their own, but by a jury of pros, a winner will be crowned.

Alright, Alright, Alright Award (Best Austin Video) This video embodies the creative spirit of Austin- saying it in such a way that is unforgettable; much like this awards namesake muttered by a young McConaughey in Austin’s timelessly stoned and bewildered classic.

18 Keepin It Weird Award (Best Experimental) You’ll know it when you see it. This category of experimentation pushes the boundaries of what you believed “weird” was and then steps over that line a few more times with aplomb. It should leave you with a coy grin, scratching your head wondering, “well, that was weird”. And we’re all better for it.

Best Horror Vid Our “Horror, Gore, Galore!” screening has gotten so good it needed it’s own award! These mini horror films manage to pack the suspense and gore of a full flick into under 5 minutes. Whether brooding music, fake blood baths, or stunning vescera, it’s all about the execution! (Pun intended.)

Now, note this does not by any means need to be the most violent or bloody video, but you’ll know it by the tingly feeling left behind. (NOTE: AMVF does not condone violence).

Funny or High Award (Funniest Video) Laugh, cry, or urinate yourself. You know funny when you see it and these knee-slappers will not disappoint. As with all music videos, you’ve got to match the tone of the song, and some of these punchlines are slow and steady but payoff in the final delivery. Best Art Direction All you see is art. You can’t help but take note of the music video that pays poignant attention to the makeup, styling, costumes, scenes and appearance of objects in the composition, inherently acknowledging the eye of an art director or production designer of the video. Commendable art direction can complement the story or lead the charge of visual poetry.
