It’s just not fair that the older you get, the more people tend to write you off. Ok, yes I was born in another century and it’s true I do tend to be a bit of a collector. I can’t help it that I’m the best place to keep some of Australia’s most historic collections – over five million items if you want to get down to it. But that’s no reason to think that I’m not as modern and with it as anybody else. I’m very comfy online, give me a mouse and a screen and I can take you to places and show you things you’ve only dreamed about. I’ve got lots of other hobbies too. I’m a bit of a movie and poetry buff, I love getting to know interesting people and I’m also an exhibitionist if you must know. I also have to confess that I am a bit of a fashionista, well outward appearances do count you know. Come on, get to know me... Read me. 2 Our new website provides access to rare historical objects and materials including 9 of the 11 First Fleet diaries known to exist. Read me. Library Council of NSW 3 2008 Annual Report I am 24/7. Even when I’m closed, I’m open. My cyber self is awake and going for it 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Read me. Library Council of NSW 5 2008 Annual Report I am hungry. I’ve already said I’m a collector from way back – come on, everybody has their vices. Right now I have collected over five million items including monographs, pictures, posters, ephemera, sheet music, talking books, maps, newspapers, microfilm and microfiche, films and videos, sound recordings, photographs, architectural plans, coins and phew... postage stamps. I’m not done yet, so watch this space. Read me. 6 The winning entries in the $210,000 Moran Prizes 2008 – Doug Moran National Portrait Prize and the Moran Contemporary Photographic Prize – were announced at the State Library. Read me. Library Council of NSW 7 2008 Annual Report I am sociable. There’s nothing I love more than getting a group of people together and having a good time. I’ve held concerts, launched books, screened movies, hosted celebrities, entertained children, got into debates, slammed poetry and discussed hot topics. Frankly if it’s out there, it’s in here. Read me. 8 We run a series of free exhibitions to showcase our collections as well as hosting major local and international displays. Read me. I don’t know if you know this but five of my historic Mitchell Library galleries are some of the best places to see constantly changing exhibitions and displays. Plus of course I do like to host my international connections as well. Last year’s World Press Photo attracted 4,460 professional photographers from 124 countries who entered 78,083 images. Say cheese... Read me. 10 Young Poets, hip-hop artists and storytellers across NSW should polish their rhymes and lyrics in preparation for the Australian Poetry Slam 08. Heats are held across the whole of NSW with the national grand final at the Opera House. Read me. Library Council of NSW 11 2008 Annual Report I am out there. Although I live in Sydney city, I am one of the those lucky folk who can manage to be in many different places at one time. And I’m all about sharing. It’s true! I am in rural and remote communities plugging them into the kind of facilities that we enjoy in this big ole beautiful city of ours. I tour often with exhibitions, training and events reaching people and communities keen to learn new stuff and appreciate the social connections I can bring. Read me. 12 The world premiere of the extraordinary multimedia exhibition, Wisdom, featuring 51 of the world’s most inspiring and iconic personalities over the age of 65, was launched at the State Library. Two were for 3-year-old fillies for trainer Wesley Ward: Lady Aurelia, whose second 5-furlong Royal Ascot win came in the G1 King=s Stand on Tuesday; followed by Wednesday=s last-race winner Con Te Partiro in the Listed Sandringham H. at a mile. In Thursday=s opener, Sioux Nation, trained by a certain Aidan O=Brien, became Scat Daddy=s fourth Royal Ascot 5-furlong 2-year-old Group winner, his fifth 2-year-old Group winner total, and marked the seventh win for Scat Daddy at Royal Ascot in five years. To those outside politics, Nathan Rees's installation as Premier came as a bolt from the blue. But forces working against Morris Iemma had been gathering for months. As a number of Labor insiders tell it, his unwavering support for privatisation of the state's power industry was not the only cause of Iemma's downfall. The NSW Labor headquarters in Sussex Street, under the leadership of its secretary, Karl Bitar, 37, had tu rned against Iemma months before when his disapproval ratings soared. Iemma told colleagues he detected a change in Bitar's attitude towards him from about Christmas. "By March you could see that Morris was doing worse than the party," a source said. "The punters out there thought they had been conned; Morris came in as premier and said it was a new government. They had given him the benefit of the doubt and progress had not been made. So the electorate was pissed off." Against the drum-beat of the polls, the privatisation debate was growing steadily more bitter. Party bosses had kept a tight lid on the festering tensions over electricity during last year's federal election campaign. But once that was out of the way, all bets were off. "Karl Bitar and Joh n Robertson [the UnionsNSW boss] did nothing else from the Monday after the federal election until the state party conference in May except try to manage the electricity debate," said a source.

Governance was key to that response, medicine was supportive. 120 years later the Novel Coronavirus thence COVID-19 was mayhem, warnings had been ignored and Australia was sliding backwards economically. There is supposed to be a self-correcting mechanism called “budget repair” when a government finds it mismanaged bushfires and rorts so that the next one would be better planned and organised. The opposite happened, repair (MYEFO) was cancelled, delays became critical, mistakes abounded as the “Canberra Bubble” did not know how to prepare a “plan” as I had done in 2 days when BHP announced the closure of steelmaking in Newcastle in 1997. The States pushed PM Morrison into setting up a cooperative National Cabinet on 13 March 2020. It emerged from the Canberra Bubble without any explanation of logic, objectives, modus operandi or budget, and this analyst predicted it would fail as soon as a member’s self-interest clashed with the collective view – and that was a safe bet as NSW’s Premier, Glady Berejiklian, is an habitual renegade and regularly attacks her peers. It has been under the control of the PM’s department head who has a NSW reputation for negative practices (he used to report to Berejiklian).
