The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station – Record of the Year 2010-2011 1 THE CONNECTICUT AGRICULTURAL EXPERIMENT STATION Record of the Year 2010-2011 The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, founded in 1875, was the first state agricultural experiment station in the United States. The Station has laboratories, offices, and greenhouses at 123 Huntington Street, New Haven 06511, Lockwood Farm for experiments on Evergreen Avenue in Hamden 06518, the Valley Laboratory and farm on Cook Hill Road, Windsor 06095, and a research center in Griswold and Voluntown (on Sheldon Road). Station research is conducted by members of the following departments: Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry and Genetics, Entomology, Forestry and Horticulture, Environmental Sciences, and Plant Pathology and Ecology. Two exotic insect pests, the brown marmorated stink bug and spotted-wing Drosophila, have been detected in the state. Of Asian origin, these pests threaten a wide range of fruits and vegetables. More than 326,000 mosquitoes were collected and tested for encephalitis viruses. The West Nile virus re-emerged in at least 30 towns and cities and caused illnesses in 9 persons. A fungus is being investigated as a possible control for ticks that transmit the Lyme disease agent and other pathogens. There is additional evidence that barberry growths enhance tick populations in or near forests and that there are higher numbers of ticks infected with the Lyme disease bacterium in these settings. Our crop research is making good progress. A patent application has been submitted for a new strawberry cultivar called Rubicon. Pest resistant lines of tobacco have been developed. Moreover, improvements have been made in growing grapes and vegetables. Diagnostic laboratories in the Departments of Entomology and Plant Pathology and Ecology have been busy answering public inquiries. Bed bug infestations and fungal infections of plants continue to be topics of great interest to homeowners and growers, respectively. Analytical chemists documented the presence of urea formaldehyde in building insulation material. Improvements are being made or planned for our buildings. The Jenkins-Waggoner Laboratory is in the design phase with Flad Architects of Stamford, CT. The Bond Commission allocated $500,000 to build a field laboratory in Griswold, CT. This facility will serve growers and other state residents in eastern Connecticut. Other funds were received to correct water problems in the boiler room. The Experiment Station’s outreach programs reach millions of citizens. During this reporting period, there were 2,686,464 page views on our website. Staff members gave 1,266 talks and interviews. In addition, a 30-second video was produced to help describe the Station’s research being conducted in different core areas. The aim of the Wild Species series is to provide an overview on which species occur in Canada, in which provinces, territories or ocean regions they occur, and what is their status. Each species assessed in this report received a rank among the following categories: Extinct (0.2), Extirpated (0.1), At Risk (1), May Be At Risk (2), Sensitive (3), Secure (4), Undetermined (5), Not Assessed (6), Exotic (7) or Accidental (8). In the 2010 report, 11 950 species were assessed. Many taxonomic groups that were first assessed in the previous Wild Species reports were reassessed, such as vascular plants, freshwater mussels, odonates, butterflies, crayfishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. Other taxonomic groups are assessed for the first time in the Wild Species 2010 report, namely lichens, mosses, spiders, predaceous diving beetles, ground beetles (including the reassessment of tiger beetles), lady beetles, bumblebees, black flies, horse flies, mosquitoes, and some selected macromoths. The overall results of this report show that the majority of Canada’s wild species are ranked Secure.

Psorophora ciliata (Fabricius) is a large mosquito (Cutwa and O’Meara 2005) that has developed an outsized reputa- tion because of its relatively intimidating heft and persistent Synonymy biting behavior (Gladney and Turner 1969), including Psorophora ciliata (Fabricius 1794) anecdotal historical accounts of its legendary aggressiveness Culex ciliata Fabricius (1794) (Wallis and Whitman 1971) and ‘frightening appearance’ Culex conterrens Walker (1856) (King et al. 1960). The ‘gallinipper’ or ‘shaggy-legged Culex molestus Weidemann (1820) gallinipper’ was used as a common name for Psorophora Culex rubidus Robineau-Desvoidy (1827) ciliata in various published reports (Ross 1947; King et al. Psorophora boscii Robineau-Desvoidy (1827) 1960; Breeland et al. 1961; Goddard et al. 2009). The term Psorophora ctites Dyar (1918) was mentioned much earlier by Flanery (1897) describing (From ITIS 2011) the mosquito as ‘the little zebra-legged thing—the shyest, slyest, meanest, and most venomous of them all’ [sic] but Distribution did not specify what species it was. The word gallinipper Psorophora ciliata usually is associated with other flood- originated as a vernacular term in the southeastern region water mosquitoes, including many species from the Aedes of the United States referring to ‘a large mosquito or other genera (Breeland et al. 1961), and has a wide distribution insect that has a painful bite or sting’ and has appeared in the New World. Floodwater mosquitoes often lay in folk tales, traditional minstrel songs, and a blues their eggs in low-lying areas with damp soil and grassy song referencing a large mosquito with a ‘fearsome bite’ overgrowth.

INTRODUCTION HAYDAK, in 1936, managed to rear Oryzaephilus surinantensis (L.) in the la- boratory using an artificial diet. Many researchers have followed in his footsteps, so that since then, approximately 260 species of Coleoptera have been raised on nonnatural diets. Among these species there are 121 which are eminently xylophagous. They belong to seven families (Buprestidae, Elateridae, Bostrychiclae, Lyctidae, Myc- teridae, Cerambyciclae and Curculionidae). Their importance, from the economic point of view, varies widely : some of them attack living trees making them a pest ; others feed on dead or decaying wood so that they may be considered harmless or even beneficial (for example in the decomposition of tree stumps in forests) ; finally, a few cause damage to seasoned timber. Therefore, specialists in artificial breeding have been motivated by different objectives, and so have chosen the insect or insects in each case which were most suitable for obtaining specific desired results. It is clear that in the majority of cases the choice was not made at random. Generally, the insect studied was either recently established as a pest or well documented as such. •With these laboratory breeding experiments it is possible on the one hand to draw conclusions about the insects' nutritive requirements, parasitism, ethology etc ; and on the other to obtain enough specimens to try out different phytosanitary treatments with them. Both of these achievements are applicable to effectiye control of the insect problem.

Multiple-funnel traps baited with (j)-a-pinene (released at about 2 g/d at 25–28-C) were attractive to the following Cerambycidae: Acanthocinus nodosus, A. obsoletus, Arhopalus rusticus nubilus, Asemum striatum, Monochamus titillator, Prionus pocularis, Xylotrechus integer, and X. sagittatus sagittatus. Buprestis lineata (Buprestidae), Alaus myops (Elateridae), and Hylobius pales and Pachylobius picivorus (Curculionidae) were also attracted to traps baited with (j)-a-pinene. In many locations, ethanol synergized attraction of the cerambycids Acanthocinus nodosus, A. obsoletus, Arhopalus r. nubilus, Monochamus titillator, and Xylotrechus s. sagittatus (but not Asemum striatum, Prionus pocularis,orXylotrechus integer)to traps baited with (j)-a-pinene. Similarly, attraction of Alaus myops, Hylobius pales, and Pachylobius picivorus (but not Buprestis lineata) to traps baited with (j)-a- pinene was synergized by ethanol. Sci. 43(1): 57-75 (January 2008) Abstract We examined the effects of forest management practices (prescribed burning, me­ chanical, and prescribed burn plus mechanical) on saproxylic forest Coleoptera in the southern Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. During the 2-yr study, we captured 37,191 Coleoptera with baited multiple-funnel traps and pipe traps, comprising 20 families and 122 species that were used for our analysis. Saproxylic beetle numbers increased greatly from the first year to the second year on all treatments. Species richness and total abundance of Coleoptera were not significantly affected by the treatments, but several families (e.g., Elateridae, Cleridae, Trogositi­ dae, Scolytidae) were significantly more abundant on treated plots. Abundances of many spe­ cies, including various species of Scolytidae were significantly affected by the treatments. How­ ever, these scolytids (Hylastes salebrosus Eichoff, Ips grandicollis Eichoff, Xyloborinus saxeseni Ratzburg, Xyleborus sp., Xyleborus atratus Eichoff) did not respond in the same way to the treatments. Likewise, other Coleoptera such as Pityophagus sp. (Nitidulidae), Hylobius pales Herbst (Curculionidae), and Xylotrechus sagittatus Germar (Cerambycidae) also varied in their responses to the treatments. Species richness was not significantly different for the spring 2003 trapping seasons, but the fall 2003 sample had a higher number of species on mechanical shrub removal only and mechanical shrub removal plus prescribed burning plots compared with con­ trols.

Приведен аннотированный список 177 видов надсемейства Cerambycoidae, отмеченных в Уссурийском заповеднике и сопредельных территориях. Представлены сведения о распространении редких видов (Callipogon relictus и Rosalia coelestis) на территории заповедника. Beetles of the superfamily Cerambyсoidae are among the best-studied insect groups. The superfamily currently consists of 4 families: Disteniidae Thomson, 1860, Cerambycidae Latreille, 1802, Oxypeltidae Lacordaire, 1869, and Vesperidae Mulsant, 1839. The increased interest in these insects is mostly due to their unique appearance and size. The fauna of longicorn beetles of the Russian Far East started to be actively studied in the 1920s, after the researchers of the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences had visited the southern part of this region and obtained a large sample collection. The first paper by T.P. Samoilov (1936) was based on the results of this and the previously made collection and focused on the faunistic-ecological characterization of the fauna of longicorn beetles of the southern Primorskii krai.
