A Protected Structure, unless otherwise stated, includes the interior of the structure, the land lying within the curtilage of the structure, and other structures lying within that curtilage and their interiors. The protection also extends to boundary treatments. The proposed RPS contained within Draft Limerick Development Plan 2022 - 2028 Plan represents a varied cross section of the built heritage of Limerick. The RPS is a dynamic record, subject to revision and addition. Sometimes, ambiguities in the address and name of the buildings can make it unclear whether a structure is included on the RPS. Where there is uncertainty you should contact the Conservation Officer. The Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht is responsible for carrying out surveys of the architectural heritage on a county-by-county basis. Following the publication of the NIAH for Limerick City and County, and any subsequent Ministerial recommendations, the Council will consider further amendments to the Record of Protected Structures. The NIAH survey may be consulted online at buildingsofireland.ie There are 565 structures listed as Protected Structures in the Adare - Rathkeale District. The NIAH recommends 173 structures to be added to the Record of Protected Structures. The Council will seek to assess and add these structures if appropriate within the lifetime of this plan. -

Section 12 (2) of the Act provides for the exhibition in each county of the list and mapsfor that county in a mannerprescribed by regulations madeby the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht. The relevant regulations were made under Statutory Instrument No. 341 of 1994, entitled National Monuments(Exhibitior~ of Record of Monuments)Regulations, 1994. I PREFACE. This memoir has been prepared to accompany the new polour-printeld of the Liineri& district. Thg boundaries .of the map are shown in fig. 1, p. 1, and include the basin of lthe Shannon between Adare and Cratloe on the west and Caberconlish and Castleconnell on the east. This area in- cludes nearly the whole‘ of the previously published Sheet 143, and the western part of Sheet 144, of the geological map show- ing the rocks beneath the “ drift.” The recent survey had for its object the mapping of the glacial drifts and other superficial deposits which were not included within’the scope of the original survey. A general revision of the boundaries to be assigned to the rocks below such deposits was not attempted; but in certain cases, where fresh observation showed the need for an alteration of the line 4 between the limestone and the igneous series, .a new line was drawn uppn the map. -

Under the provisions of the legislation the R.P.S. is an integral part of Limerick County Council’s Development Plan A protected structure is deemed, under the provisions of Section 2 of the Planning and Development Acts, 2000 to 2010, to consist of the following: (i) the interior of the structure, (ii) the land lying within the curtilage of the structure, (iii) any other structures lying within that curtilage and their interiors, and (iv) all fixtures and features which form part of the interior or exterior of any structure or structures referred to in subparagraph (i) or (iii)”. Elements comprising the fabric of the structure (which at first glance may not be considered to be of importance or significance), such as lath and plaster finishes, external render, window and door frames and their associated joinery and fixings (such as latches and catches, and so forth), glazing, natural slate roofing and the supporting structures, painted timber, as well as the more obvious elements of the structure such as decorative plasterwork, are deemed to be protected. Protection is also afforded to the plan and layout of the building. -

The Barry Papers P20 University of Limerick Library and Information Services University of Limerick Special Collections The Barry Papers Reference Code: IE 2135 P20 Title: The Barry Papers Dates of Creation: 1821-1931 Level of Description: Fonds Extent and Medium: 2 boxes (75 files) CONTEXT Name of Creator: The Barry family of Springvale, Ballyneety, County Limerick, and of Leamlara, County Cork. Biographical History: The Sandville branch of the Barry family is descended from David Barry, who received a grant of land in county Limerick having saved the life of an Englishman during the 1641-42 war. Originally called Fryarstown, the name of the estate had been changed to Sandville by the time of the marriage of John Barry in 1804 to Mary O’Shaughnessy. Their eldest son, James, established himself at Bellevue, Croom, county Limerick, while the Sandville property passed to the third son, John. Following the latter’s death without issue in 1860, both properties passed to James Grene Barry (1841- 1929), James’s eldest son. The Leamlara branch of the family is often referred to as Standish Barry to distinguish it from the other Barry families in the area. The Leamlara estate near Carrigtwohill, county Cork, was granted to the Barrys at the time of the Anglo-Norman invasion. A castle built on the property in the fourteenth century was utilised in the mid eighteenth century for the construction of Leamlara House. It remained the family seat until the death of Henry Standish Barry in 1945, when his two surviving daughters sold the property to the Irish Land Commission. -
