DRAFT LIMERICK DEVELOPMENT PLAN 2022-2028 Volume 3C Proposed Record of Protected Structures Adare/Rathkeale Municipal District June 2021 Contents 1.0 Introduction ......................................................................................................................... 1 2.0 Record of Protected Structures - Adare Rathkeale Municipal District ................................ 2 1.0 Introduction Limerick City & County Council is obliged to compile and maintain a Record of Protected Structures (RPS) under the provisions of the Planning and Development Act 2000 (as amended). A Protected Structure, unless otherwise stated, includes the interior of the structure, the land lying within the curtilage of the structure, and other structures lying within that curtilage and their interiors. The protection also extends to boundary treatments. The proposed RPS contained within Draft Limerick Development Plan 2022 - 2028 Plan represents a varied cross section of the built heritage of Limerick. The RPS is a dynamic record, subject to revision and addition. Sometimes, ambiguities in the address and name of the buildings can make it unclear whether a structure is included on the RPS. Where there is uncertainty you should contact the Conservation Officer. The Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht is responsible for carrying out surveys of the architectural heritage on a county-by-county basis. Following the publication of the NIAH for Limerick City and County, and any subsequent Ministerial recommendations, the Council will consider further amendments to the Record of Protected Structures. The NIAH survey may be consulted online at buildingsofireland.ie There are 565 structures listed as Protected Structures in the Adare - Rathkeale District. The NIAH recommends 173 structures to be added to the Record of Protected Structures. The Council will seek to assess and add these structures if appropriate within the lifetime of this plan. Useful resources when undertaking works on Protected Structures and within their curtilage can be found the planning leaflets series available on-line on opr.ie, the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage Advice Series on buildingsofireland.ie, and the advice and guidance on traditional building skills on heritagecouncil.ie For objectives in relation to Protected Structures and NIAH recommended structures refer to Section 5.5.2 Architectural Heritage in Chapter 5 Environment and Heritage, Volume 1 Written Statement, and for guidance on works refer to Section 11.10.2 Architectural Heritage – Protected Structures in Chapter 11 Development Management Standards, Volume 1 Written Statement. 1 2.0 Record of Protected Structures - Adare Rathkeale Municipal District 2 RPS Reg Building name or Photo NIAH Reg No. Address/townland Description No. type Industrial & Aghalacka, Institutional‐ 6 21901103 Askeaton Station Askeaton Railway Station Altavilla, 7 21902001 Alta Villa House Country House Rathkeale Altavilla/Ardgoul Limestone masonry 8 21902004 Newbridge North/Scart bridge c.1747 Multiple‐bay Altavilla, 9 21902003 Altavilla Mill splayed Uplan Rathkeale former corn and tuck mill, built c. 1790 3 Building name or Photo RPS Reg No. NIAH Reg No. Address/townland Description type Vernacular farmhouse, 18 NONE Ardaneer Cottage Ardaneer associated farmyard and outbuildings ArdgoolbegCurraghnadeeley‐ Limestone five arch 19 21902006 Kilcool Bridge Kilcool, Rathkeale bridge c. 1780 22 21902227 'Fitzgerald's' Arywee, Fedamore Thatched Dwelling Limestone and cast iron gateway to Limestone and cast 27 2182603 Askeaton Inchirourke iron gates c. 1800 House 4 RPS Reg No. NIAH Reg No. Building name or type Address/townland Description Photo 40 None 'McDonagh's' Ballincurra, Cappagh Thatched outhouse Thatched Dwelling 42 21903113 'McCarthy's' Ballinfreera, Croom c.1800 Ballingarrane, 45 None NONE Former Forge Askeaton Industrial and Ballingrane Railway Ballingarrane, Institutional‐ Railway 46 21902016 Station Askeaton station railway station, built in 1858 5 RPS Reg No. NIAH Reg No. Building name or type Address/townland Description Photo Embury‐Heck Memorial Ballingarrane, 47 21902015 built 1766 Church Askeaton Single storey over 49 None Ormond Cottage Ballinlyny basement Georgian house Two‐storey over 54 21902027 Hollywood House Ballinvira, Rathkeale basement country house, built c. 1790 55 21902017 'Cregan's' Ballinvirick, Askeaton Thatched Building 6 RPS Reg No. NIAH Reg No. Building name or type Address/townland Description Photo Ballinvirick, Country House built c. 56 21902019 Ballinvirick House Askeaton. 1750 Ballinvirick, 57 None 'Murphy's' Thatched Building Askeaton.
