The Miraculous Medal and Saint Catherine Labouré IX. The Miraculous Medal at Last! Sister Catherine did not tell Father Aladel about the second apparition of the Medal in December 1830 be- cause he had not responded favorably to her earlier report. But, sometime in the autumn of 1831, an inner locution urged Catherine to approach him again. She prayed to Mary: “[Father] does not want to listen to me [about the Medal].” The Blessed Mother responded, “He is my servant and he should be frightened of dis- pleasing me.” Catherine told Father Aladel, “The Virgin is angry.” Those words deeply affected the priest and jolted him into action. * First, Father Aladel consulted two of his fellow priests. He and Father Jean-Baptiste Etienne, Procurator General of the Vincentians, had occasion to meet with Archbishop Quélen and brought up the Medal and apparitions. As it turned out, the Archbishop was profoundly devoted to the Blessed Virgin in her “original grace.” He listened to the story about the apparitions and immediately approved the Medal. “There is no question here of prejudging the nature of the vision nor its circumstances,” he said. “We are simply going to distribute a medal. The tree will be judged by its fruits.” A jeweler named Adrien Vachette and Father Aladel designed the Medal according to the vision given to Sister Labouré. The image of the Blessed Mother was inspired by the statue of the Immaculate Conception in Saint Sulpice Church, with the addition of rays coming from the hands of the Virgin. Father Aladel also consulted confidentially with Sister Cathe- rine on details. On June 30, 1832, 1,500 Medals were ready. Catherine received hers in July “though nothing was done to single her out or reveal her secret.” The Medal brought about miraculous healings, conversions (including those on their deathbeds), and renewed religious zeal. People referred to the Medal as “miraculous.” More metalsmiths produced it and by 1839, there were over ten mil- lion of them distributed throughout the world! The Medal also produced a new climate in the Vincentian family. The men’s congregation and the women’s congregation both experienced renewal in the coming decades as the Blessed Virgin had said during the nocturnal conversation with Sister Catherine. Since the Miraculous Medal originated in visions that a novice in the 1830 class experienced, Archbishop Quélen opened proceedings in February 1836 to determine the veracity of these visions. He wanted to meet the Sister to whom the Med- al had been revealed. However, Father Aladel attested that, because of her humility, the Sister in question did not want either to meet the Archbishop or to appear before the investigating committee. There was also the conviction that the Blessed Virgin desired that the Sister to whom She had appeared should remain incognito. The commission examined the good fruits of the Miraculous Medal and placed full trust in the testimony of Father Aladel on the spirituality of the unnamed visionary Sister. The inquiry ended with the finding that the Medal had a heavenly origin. Here are some events in the first three decades following the revelation of the Miraculous Medal. Blessed Frédéric Ozanam, founder of the Conferences of Saint Vincent de Paul in 1833, carried the Miraculous Medal with him. In 1836, King Louis-Philippe began wearing the Miraculous Medal. In 1838, Pope Gregory XVI added to the Litany of Loreto the invocation “Queen conceived without sin, pray for us.” In the same motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity on Rue du Bac, the Blessed Mother appeared to Sister Justine Bisqueyburu in 1840 and revealed the green scapular for healing. In 1842, a young Jewish man by the name of Alphonse Ratisbonne wore the Medal and saw an apparition of the Blessed Virgin in Rome. He became Catholic and was later ordained a priest. In 1845, Saint John Henry Newman wore the Medal two months before his conversion to Catholicism. On July 26, 1846, the Lord Jesus appeared to Sister Apolline Andriveau, a Sister of Charity, and gave her the model of the Red Scapular of the Passion. On September 19, 1846, Our Lady appeared to Melanie and Maximin in La Salette. In 1854, Blessed Pope Pius IX defined the dogma of the Immaculate Conception. In 1858, the Blessed Mother appeared in Lourdes to Saint Bernadette Soubirous.
