Ted Dzieszko Dear Parishioners and Friends, In teaching about the Kingdom of God, Jesus uses parables, or images of people and situations with which we can identify. "Behold the sower went out to sow." God sows the seeds of his word. Like every good teacher, Jesus does not give us the answers at once, but tries to engage us in the process of discovering them. It encourages us to open our hearts and receive the message of the Good News. Ultimately, the quality of the harvest depends on it. Seed sown on the road means the one who listens to the word about the kingdom and does not understand it; Evil comes and takes away what is sown in his heart. The effort of the mind is associated with faith. Faith seeks understanding. Hence, the obstacle to faith is mental laziness, which is that in the intellectual sphere, a man seeks easily digestible, but of little nutrition. Crime, pornography and magazines tracking scandals and sensations are very popular. However, what has a deeper dimension and forces one to think is considered boring and worthless. Intellectual laziness that is understood strikes at the foundations of faith. Faith demands intellectual effort. Seed sown on rocky places means the one who listens to the word and immediately accepts it; but it's not rooted, therefore, not solid. St. John Paul II was applauded; this shows that the word of God, which he proclaimed, was accepted immediately with joy, but when the Pope returned to Rome, did it take root? One of the weaknesses of Catholicism is what is called: holiday Catholic. Many become Catholic at Christmas, Easter („Chreaster”) or some other special family occasion. Seed sown among thorns means the one who listens to the word, but worldly worries and the illusion of wealth drown out the word, so that it remains fruitless. This obstacle is particularly relevant in the age of developing capitalism, which is called the gospel of getting rich. This wealth can consume someone so much, that one forgets that man cannot live ny money alone. Capital cannot be an idol that replaces God, and a bank cannot replace a temple. Finally seed sown on fertile soil means the one who listens to the word and understands it. Only such understanding is full. It means recognizing that God is entirely Lord. Whoever understands the word about the kingdom in this way will bear fruit of good deeds, the Christian life: 100 times, 60 times, 30 times. So, as you can see, the word of God is a collaborative effort. Let us remove three obstacles to God's word, so that we may be like fertile soil and not a religious quarry. May the lack of understanding, the lack of perseverance and the excessive worries not destroy the seed of God’s word. Let us accept God into our hearts and remember that even the devil can quote the Holy Bible, but we must live it. Let us also remember, especially when we look at others, that the Sower is present and no one else has the right to judge whether all grain is lost. The Brown Scapular Our Lady of Mount Carmel appeared to the Carmelite monk Saint Simon Stock in 1251 and presented him with a brown wool scapular, saying, “Whoever dies invested with this Scapular shall be preserved from the eternal flames. It is a sign of salvation, a sure safeguard in danger, a pledge of peace and of my special protection until the end of the ages.” Any Catholic can be enrolled in the Brown Scapular. Many children are enrolled after their First Communion, although there is no age requirement. To gain the promises of the Brown Scapular, one must be enrolled or invested in the Brown Scapular by a Catholic priest or deacon.

    Our Lady of Mount Carmel Feast Day: July 16 The Story of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Hermits lived on Mount Carmel near the Fountain of Elijah in northern Israel in the 12th century. They had a chapel dedicated to Our Lady. By the 13th century they became known as “Brothers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.” They soon celebrated a special Mass and Office in honor of Mary. In 1726, it became a celebration of the universal Church under the title of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. For centuries the Carmelites have seen themselves as specially related to Mary. Their great saints and theologians have promoted devotion to her and often championed the mystery of her Immaculate Conception. Saint Teresa of Avila called Carmel “the Order of the Virgin.” Saint John of the Cross credited Mary with saving him from drowning as a child, leading him to Carmel, and helping him escape from prison. Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus believed that Mary cured her from illness. On her First Communion day, Thérèse dedicated her life to Mary. During the last days of her life she frequently spoke of Mary. There is a tradition —which may not be historical —that Mary appeared to Saint Simon Stock, a leader of the Carmelites, and gave him a scapular, telling him to promote devotion to it. The scapular is a modified version of Mary’s own garment. It symbolizes her special protection and calls the wearers to consecrate themselves to her in a special way. The scapular reminds us of the gospel call to prayer and penance—a call that Mary models in a splendid way.

In our last talk, the first in this series on “Apparitions for the World,” I focused on the lesser known prelude to the vision of the Miraculous Medal. Mary appeared to young St. Catherine Labouré to lay the foundation, as it were, of all the subsequent mod- ern apparitions. I want to continue on the premise that her apparitions are unique pieces of a large mosaic, not rubber stamps of the same message. Only by laying out all of them can we view the mosaic to see the larger message. Since each of her apparitions is a book in itself, and we are confining ourselves to one hour talks in a nineteen week seminar, I had to determine which apparitions should receive special attention for understanding the mosaic. For awhile, I wasn’t thinking of presenting the pieces in chronological order. After all, after the work is finished, no one really cares if the artist had first worked on this corner or that corner. Although that’s quite true, we’re not talking about bits of colored stone, but living pieces. As we saw in our Genesis talk yesterday on the garden, God loves living things, for as Scripture declares so many times, our God is a “living God!” Each of these “apparitions to the world” is a world in itself, just as each of the Gospel parables can present almost infinite angles for meditation as one turns a diamond in the sun.
