Grown & Sexy. Not everyone was left convinced by Babyface's previous solo album, 2001's Face2Face. Many critics and fans found it to be a desperate act of some form, containing several stabs at with-it youthfulness that would've sounded out of character on his early albums with the Deele, not to mention something he put together almost 20 years later. He was either tired of doing the expected or was attempting to appeal to more than the thirty- and fortysomethings (or both). Those who were left disappointed by that album will probably be happy to have the Face of old back with Grown & Sexy, a back-to-basics album that sounds a lot more natural in comparison. While this is very familiar territory, few cover it as well. Written with longtime partner Daryl Simmons and produced with relative newcomer Gregg Pagani (LeAnn Rimes, Will Smith), Grown & Sexy doesn't have any songs that immediately jump out and fall in line with the biggest hits, but it does make up for that with its consistency.

Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

  • Sounding Sentimental: American Popular Song from Nineteenth-Century Ballads to 1970S Soft Rock Emily Margot Gale Vancouver, BC B
Sounding Sentimental: American Popular Song From Nineteenth-Century Ballads to 1970s Soft Rock Emily Margot Gale Vancouver, BC Bachelor of Music, University of Ottawa, 2005 Master of Arts, Music Theory, University of Western Ontario, 2007 A Dissertation presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Music University of Virginia May, 2014 © Copyright by Emily Margot Gale All Rights Reserved May 2014 For Ma with love iv ABSTRACT My dissertation examines the relationship between American popular song and “sentimentality.” While eighteenth-century discussions of sentimentality took it as a positive attribute in which feelings, “refined or elevated,” motivated the actions or dispositions of people, later texts often describe it pejoratively, as an “indulgence in superficial emotion.” This has led an entire corpus of nineteenth- and twentieth-century cultural production to be bracketed as “schmaltz” and derided as irrelevant by the academy. Their critics notwithstanding, sentimental songs have remained at the forefront of popular music production in the United States, where, as my project demonstrates, they have provided some of the country’s most visible and challenging constructions of race, class, gender, sexuality, nationality, and morality. My project recovers the centrality of sentimentalism to American popular music and culture and rethinks our understandings of the relationships between music and the public sphere. In doing so, I add the dimension of sound to the extant discourse of sentimentalism, explore a longer history of popular music in the United States than is typical of most narratives within popular music studies, and offer a critical examination of music that—though wildly successful in its own day—has been all but ignored by scholars.

  • Bb&T Blue Skies and Golden Sands Tour
BB&T BLUE SKIES AND GOLDEN SANDS TOUR - PROGRAM NOTES Blue Skies and Golden Sands continues a musical journey that embarked at the start of the North Carolina Symphony’s 75th anniversary season in September 2006. A special pops concert called Blue Skies and Red Earth brought the orchestra together with some of North Carolina’s finest folk musicians for a grand celebration of our state’s musical heritage. Blue Skies and Red Earth thrilled audiences with the sheer depth and breadth of homegrown musical traditions that have evolved over centuries. From haunting Cherokee flute music to the propulsive sounds of the fiddle and banjo, from stately spirituals to ecstatic gospel, from earthy blues to sophisticated jazz, the anniversary program showed the Tar Heel state to be a wellspring of musical treasures. Despite having enlisted dozens of guest artists who performed ten or more styles of music, Blue Skies and Red Earth by no means exhausted North Carolina’s musical resources. A few months after the final performance, planning commenced on a follow-up concert to highlight music oriented more to the state’s eastern shores than the rolling hills and mountains to the west. It began with what seemed like a casual question: “What about beach music?" As most Carolinians know, beach music refers to a body of popular songs that provides just the right mood and rhythms for a popular style of swing dancing called the Carolina Shag. Once heavily associated with beach clubs and dance pavilions from Wilmington, North Carolina to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, shag dancing is performed all over the Southeast nowadays, and many commercial radio stations present the classic beach playlist over the air waves.

  • Annual Report Sep 2019
ANNUAL REPORT SEP 2019 - OCT 2020 INDEX INTRODUCTION INDEX OF EVENTS COMPLETED EVENTS DETAIL COMPLETED LIVE STREAM DETAIL COVID AFFECTED EVENTS DETAIL INDEX OF UPCOMING EVENTS NON PROFIT CULTURAL PARTNERS MAINTENANCE AND CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS REPORT FINANCIAL REPORT MARKETING REPORT COVID HANDBOOK To City Manager Jimmy Morales, The 19/20 season can be viewed as two distinct segments. The first six months represent major improvements and growth, followed by the sudden public closure and responses to the Covid health crisis. The year began with the renewal of the Rhythm Foundation’s management agreement. Experience and momentum gathered during the first management term were brought to bear and a season of widely diverse cultural offerings was undertaken. Long awaited capital improvements of the canopy covering and new seating system were completed in February. The season was in the middle of the busiest period in mid March when we closed the facility to the public in mid March due to the Covid health crisis. We immediately modified and adapted our operations using live streaming technologies to complete the Rhythm Foundations’s 32nd season. Emergency funding and support from the City, County and Federal government have been critical to sustaining the organization through this prolonged health crisis. We proactively engaged with community partners to identify funding, tech support and best practices for safe operations. Since going virtual in mid-March, we’ve broadcast sixteen (16) full length concerts as live streams to a collective audience of over 100,000 viewers from all over the world. The 20/21 season ahead is anchored by partnerships with the leading cultural presenting organizations in the South Florida, furthering our goal of establishing the North Beach Bandshell as a major performing arts facility in our region.
