1 the King James Bible and Biblical Scholarship The King James Bible and Biblical Scholarship (The Ethel Wood Lecture, 2011) L. W. Hurtado (University of Edinburgh) The web-site describing the Ethel Wood Lectures tells us that Mrs. Wood’s bequest to the University of London (1970) was “to provide for an annual lecture on the English Bible.” In looking over the list of lectures given since then, it appears that this has been interpreted with impressive flexibility. My own invitation to deliver the lecture for 2011, however, came with a specific request that I link it in some way to the 400 th anniversary of the publication of the “King James Version” of the Bible, AKA the “Authorised Version” (hereafter KJV). But because the limits of my own scholarly competence do not include the 16th and 17 th centuries, I cannot consider offering any fresh contribution on the circumstances or production of the KJV, nor on its literary qualities and influence.1 So I have chosen to consider the KJV in relationship to my own field of biblical scholarship, and under three main headings: (1) the KJV as a product of the biblical scholarship of its day, (2) the contribution of the KJV to the further development of biblical scholarship in the period after its publication, and (3) the effects of biblical scholarship upon our estimation of the KJV today. I The KJV is largely thought of today either simply as the sacred text above all (indeed, in some ultra-conservative circles of readers, as the very inspired Word of God and of miraculous quality), or as one of the greatest (if not the single greatest) and most influential literary productions in the English language. A large number of other English translations of the Bible are available now, of course, many of them having appeared in the last century or so; but the KJV remains impressively popular among those who read the Bible as scripture, and also, notably, those who treat it simply as historic English literature. 2 As David Daniell observed in his massive study, The Bible in English, “On a historical scale, the sheer longevity of this version is a phenomenon, without parallel.” 3 Surely, a major reason for the success of the KJV lay in the scholarly abilities of those assigned with the task of preparing it. There were certainly also political and commercial motives and moves involved as well in its early success, and the KJV received “a barrage of criticism” from clergy and scholars in the first 150 years or so 1 Cf., e.g., the 1950 Ethel M. It is difficult, however, to find much in Lewis’ obviously learned and wide-ranging discussion that corresponds directly to the lecture’s title! Of the forty-seven known members of the six translation- companies (two each in Oxford, Cambridge and Westminster), most were fellows of Oxford or Cambridge colleges, including the Regius Professors of Hebrew and Greek in both universities. 5 Moreover, some of these figures are particularly impressive, perhaps none more so than Lancelot Andrewes (1555-1626, Fellow of Pembroke Hall, Cambridge), reputed to have been competent in fifteen languages, whose many published sermons and devotional pieces exhibit his intelligence and stylistic abilities. 6 Among those appointed to produce the KJV, competence was needed in Greek for the NT, although the available editions were all based on late manuscripts (a matter to which I return later in this lecture). For the Old Testament, the Hebrew Massoretic Text had to be consulted, for the Apocrypha the Greek Septuagint, except for 2 Esdras, for which the Latin served.7 Wisely, however, those commissioned for the work included men with expertise in the various ancient languages and also with a keen sense of how the English language could be used effectively to combine simplicity and elegance with accuracy in translation. 8 However, the KJV was not a de novo translation made simply from original- language texts, nor was it intended to be one. Instead, as stated in one of the fifteen Rules to be observed in the Translation of the Bible given to the members of the translation team, “The ordinary Bible read in the Church, commonly called the Bishops Bible , to be followed, and as little altered as the Truth of the original will permit.” Another of the rules, however, allowed “These translations to be used when they agree better with the Text [i.e., the respective original language text] than [does] the Bishops: Tindoll’s, Matthews, Coverdale’s, Whitchurch’s, Geneva. ”9 It was, in short, to be a learned and well-done revision of the Bishops’ Bible (1568), but a revision based particularly upon consultation of original-language texts (and also the Latin Vulgate) as well as other key predecessor English Bibles. 10 4 Daniell, The Bible in English, 429. The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church, Revised (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1983), s.v. 10 Daniell, The Bible in English, 440-42, in a section entitled “Revision, Not Fresh Translation,” posited that after the Hampton Court meeting where the idea of a new translation had been given royal approval, “the enterprise had changed, for reasons that are not known,” and instead those appointed were “to make a revision, but of the Bishops’ Bible,” which Daniell regarded as “regrettable, but 2 In light of this aim and the evident success of the KJV, we can view it as in its time the culmination and beneficiary of a series of prior English translations of the Bible that went back at least to Tyndale’s influential translation of the New Testament (1526). 11 Indeed, though the KJV was explicitly to be a revision of the Bishops’ Bible, it has been calculated that “over four-fifths of the New Testament” in the KJV is in fact “simply Tyndale’s work of eighty years before.” 12 The other important predecessor English translations include Miles Coverdale’s complete Bible (1535), which comprised the OT, NT and the Apocrypha, this work exercising influence thereafter in “Matthew’s” Bible (1537, which incorporated a substantial part of Coverdale’s Old Testament), the Great Bible (1539), the Geneva Bible (1560), and the Bishops’ Bible (1568). 13 Acknowledging that “the KJV has often been considered miraculous, being among other things the only time a work of genius has been produced by a committee,” Daniell insisted that it is important “to recognise the nature of its particular dependence upon its predecessors,” and he underscored “its heavy and often verbatim dependence on Tyndale.” 14 Nevertheless, the KJV was a product of fresh and serious scholarly effort. Clearly, along with taking account of the various prior translations (in various European languages), those assigned to the task also made it a key aim to represent accurately in English the Hebrew or Greek of the scriptural texts. The project team was referred to as a body of translators , and clearly saw themselves in this role. In this, the KJV reflects key principles of the Protestant setting in which it was produced: (1) the original language texts preferred as the basis of scriptural translation, and (2) the aim to provide the scriptures in an accessible vernacular form for laity as well as clergy.15 As is now a commonplace observation, the Protestant emphasis upon “original language” texts shows in turn the influence of the “new learning” of the Renaissance, with its emphasis on reading ancient authors in their own language, resulting in a renewed interest in Greek and also Hebrew.

Three KJV myths First, the KJV was not translated personally by King James I, though he did pride himself on his biblical scholarship and “as a young man and a good Protestant Scot had made his own metrical versions of thirty of the Psalms, and of the Book of Revelation.” And he doubtless appreciated the effusive two-page dedication that appeared in the front of every printed copy of the Bible. Second, although the British have since the early 1800s called the KJV “the Authorized Version,” the KJV was never authorized. The term “Authorized Version” is more aptly used of the Great Bible of 1539, prepared by Myles Coverdale, which Henry VIII in 1541 and 1547 (and Elizabeth I in 1559) commanded to be read in churches, under threat of penalty for those omitting to do so. No such proclamations from either king or bishops prescribed the use of the King James Version. Third, and also contrary to popular belief, “this version was not universally loved from the moment it appeared. Far from it. As a publication in the seventeenth century it was undoubtedly successful: it was heavily used, and it rapidly saw off its chief rival, the three Geneva Bibles.     The Bible The Translators of The Bible Into English Introduction This paper is a summarization of those noble saints, many who were “faithful unto death” (Rev. 2:10) in translating the Scriptures into English. They were godly men who spent many tedious hours, ofttimes with quill and ink, diligently seeking the best word for the significance of that which was in the material available to them. It was not easy work for they did not have computers and the many tools we have today, neither did they have brightly lit rooms but ofttimes worked in low light situations in the evenings. It was in many ways a thankless task by the leading religious authorities. They certainly did not do it for monetary gain, rather, there were times when they lost their employment because of it, and some were put to death. Neither was it for the egotistical glorification of their own name being associated with it, indeed John Rogers did not use his own name. That which drove such men was the desire for the glorification of God through the common people having the Holy Scriptures in their own language. The ancient scriptures were written in three languages. Most of the Old Testament was written in Hebrew with a few passages in Aramaic. The New Testament was written principally in Greek with some words of the Lord in Aramaic. Marcion of Sinope was perhaps the earliest of Gnostic teachings in that he believed and taught that Jesus was the Saviour but not the God of Israel. He rejected the entire Hebrew scriptures.

He was the president and director of the Westminster group that translated twelve books, altogether (Genesis to 2 Kings). The task of Company One. 2. He studied most of the modern languages and devoted himself chiefly to the Oriental languages, being educated at the University of Cambridge. 3. His manual for his private devotions was prepared by himself and written wholly in the Greek language. 4. "In his funeral sermon by Dr. Buckeridge, Bishop of Rochester, it is said that Dr. Andrews was conversant with FIFTEEN LANGUAGES. Certainly, he was a respected and superior translator." I don't know any of these modern translators of the ASV, NASV, NEV, NIV, Living Letters, or paraphrases who are conversant with as many as fifteen (15) languages. B. Dr. William Bedwell was also in Company One, the Westminster Group translating Genesis through 2 Kings from Hebrew into English. 1. He had the reputation as being "an eminent Oriental scholar." 2. His fame for Arabic learning was so great that scholars sought him out for assistance. Another stated concerning him: "The honor of being the first who considerably promoted and revived the study of the Arabic language and literature in Europe." 3. In Antwerp, Germany, in 1612, he published in quarto an Edition of the Epistles of St. John in Arabic with a Latin version. I don't know anything about Arabic, but to have an edition of 1, 2, 3 John with Latin and Arabic would take a tremendously skilled and capable scholar.

Four different rankings had given Cambridge the top position. Times Higher Education puts us sixth (incomprehensibly, after Oxford). While all league tables are suspect, we can surely trust the consistency of Cambridge’s position in the world’s top ten. Still more trust can be put in the Tompkins table of Tripos rankings that have placed Trinity top in 2011, since Tripos marks are measurable in a way that ‘quality and satisfaction’ can never be.

Appreciated most by fundamental Baptists and Bible-believers, the Old Black-backed 66 has proved itself to be the perfect, inspired word of God for the English speaking people. By this Blessed Book we live. We read it and know it is the inspired word of God. It not only contains the word of God – it is the word of God. We preach it. We study it. We teach it. We raise or families by it. We shall never give it up. We know this Bible has its scars. It has been attacked, persecuted, mocked, banned, and disregarded – even from its first printing in 1611. Although it has been carefully handled for four centuries by men who love it, these men have their faults. Any preacher who is honest will admit he has erred in his quoting or reading of a verse (we tend to paraphrase the word of God when we can’t rightly remember the exact wording of a verse). This is not allowable in scripture translation or editing, but it shows we are fallible, even when handling the infallible word of God. And from the first printing – made on antiquated equipment compared to what we have today, F. H. A. I would say that this issue is, by far, the most misunderstood issue in all of the Christian realm, as well as the academic world. One of the reasons is because of “Russian Disinformation”...only kidding. However, it is because of prideful scholarly disinformation. -How can it be possible that every single word was kept without loss, addition, or subtraction? -How can anything other than the “original autographs be infallible, inerrant, and inspired? -Is it even necessary to have a perfectly preserved book if we have the thoughts of God by which to live? -Isn’t it true that insistence of some to hold to a particular Bible version has caused a whole bunch of unnecessary arguing, fighting, name calling, and division? I could jump right into this issue head-first, but I am fearful that I might lose some of you because of a lack of disinformation(which is a good thing!). Let us start with the Old Testament. Let me just say from the outset of our study that one of the problems is over-simplification. Let me ask, How many times have you either heard or said, “David wrote the Psalms?” -Did David write the Psalms? Yes, many of them. -Did David write all of the Psalms? No, Asaph(12), Korah(11), Solomon, Moses, Ethan, and Unknown. Question: Did Moses write all of the first five books? No.

'S.L.H.,' in the column of the Morning Leader headed 'Sub Rosa,' says that the following suggestion reaches him 'from a learned correspondent in West Hackney':— 'In the name Shakespear there are four vowels and six consonants..... If you write down the figure 4 and then follow it by the figure 6, you get 46. Very well — turn to Psalm 46 and you will find that in it the 46th word from the beginning is "shake," while the 46th word from the end is "spear." This fact, or rather these facts, may be held to prove, according to my correspondent, that the Psalms were written by Shakespear and that this is really the correct way of spelling his name.
