  • The Tarzan Series of Edgar Rice Burroughs
I The Tarzan Series of Edgar Rice Burroughs: Lost Races and Racism in American Popular Culture James R. Nesteby Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree in Doctor of Philosophy August 1978 Approved: © 1978 JAMES RONALD NESTEBY ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ¡ ¡ in Abstract The Tarzan series of Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950), beginning with the All-Story serialization in 1912 of Tarzan of the Apes (1914 book), reveals deepseated racism in the popular imagination of early twentieth-century American culture. The fictional fantasies of lost races like that ruled by La of Opar (or Atlantis) are interwoven with the realities of racism, particularly toward Afro-Americans and black Africans. In analyzing popular culture, Stith Thompson's Motif-Index of Folk-Literature (1932) and John G. Cawelti's Adventure, Mystery, and Romance (1976) are utilized for their indexing and formula concepts. The groundwork for examining explanations of American culture which occur in Burroughs' science fantasies about Tarzan is provided by Ray R. Browne, publisher of The Journal of Popular Culture and The Journal of American Culture, and by Gene Wise, author of American Historical Explanations (1973). The lost race tradition and its relationship to racism in American popular fiction is explored through the inner earth motif popularized by John Cleves Symmes' Symzonla: A Voyage of Discovery (1820) and Edgar Allan Poe's The narrative of A. Gordon Pym (1838); Burroughs frequently uses the motif in his perennially popular romances of adventure which have made Tarzan of the Apes (Lord Greystoke) an ubiquitous feature of American culture.

The Apocalyptic Book List Presented by: The Post Apocalyptic Forge Compiled by: Paul Williams ([email protected]) As with other lists compiled by me, this list contains material that is not strictly apocalyptic or post apocalyptic, but that may contain elements that have that fresh roasted apocalyptic feel. Because I have not read every single title here and have relied on other peoples input, you may on occasion find a title that is not appropriate for the intended genre....please do let me know and I will remove it, just as if you find a title that needs to be added...that is appreciated as well. • Inspirational Reading List 2008 Edition
Old School Dungeons & Dragons™ Inspirational Reading List 2008 Edition Edited by Kellri [email protected] http://kellri.blogspot.com While there are bookcases in the upper studio, elsewhere on the second floor, and on the first floor, the main repository of printed lore (other than that piled here and there) is my basement library which includes thousands of reference works, maps, magazines, and works of fiction. - E. Gary Gygax Some guidelines for future contributors: (1) No Forgotten Realms/Dragonlance/etc. tie-ins. This is not a list of licensed gaming fiction. You’ll thank me later. (2) No campaign journals, fan-written fiction or other unpublished/amateur work. See (1). (3) No gaming sourcebooks, modules, rulebooks or magazines (unless they contain reprinted or original fiction). For a list of old school gaming materials, surf to the Acaeum. (4) Include in-line links to the material. In some cases these books are available online for free, if not, they are available from Amazon. Several gaming-related reader’s lists are already available at Amazon, and can be a decent way to find reviews for many of these books. c.f. http://www.amazon.com/D-Inspirational-Educational-Reading-Appendix/lm/2K4BPQB553DZ1 (5) A descriptive blurb would be great, or optionally a short list of keywords or tags for the DM looking for specific inspiration. Examples might include ELVES, DUNGEON, DRAGON, THIEVES, OGRES, etc. (6) In the case of series or trilogies, please include the titles of the individual books if possible. (7) Several of the authors listed below may need an updated or expanded listing.

With over 1,300 books, including more than 150 from various TV and film universes, and some 1,600 2000AD comics, there is almost certainly something for everyone. For all comic lovers, our Prog collection is fairly complete from issue 422 onwards, but we also have some earlier Progs, Judge Dredd Magazines, Monthly Specials and various other 2000AD publications. There’s currently no open space to browse the physical books but we’re working on it and by Christmas, will also have extended the library to audiobooks and radio dramas! In the meantime, here is a list of our books. For everything else, I’m happy to talk you through what we have. For borrowing, recommendations (either for yourself or us), donations (always welcome) or a chat about sci-fi and fantasy, feel free to email me [email protected]. • Introduction
Notes Introduction 1. Weird Tales, during the Farnsworth Wright editorial years (1926– 39), and Unknown, later Unknown Worlds (1939–43), are the most noteworthy of these, though there were a host of others. This will be covered in some detail in Chapter 6. 2. Oddly, little of this work had appeared in the rapidly growing mass- market pocket paperback medium prior to the 1960s; Jack Vance’s The Dying Earth seems alone in this regard. 3. Though other publishers did release relevant titles, the three most notewor- thy here are Lancer Books, Pyramid Books, and Ace Books. 4. Circa 1960, Fritz Leiber, L. Sprague de Camp, Jack Vance, and Poul Anderson were most well- known (and in demand) as science fiction writers, and while they did return to fantasy with the Sword and Sorcery revival, their output of science fiction, possibly excepting de Camp, remained far greater. 5. By contrast, releases by Ace, Lancer, and Pyramid—and, later, DAW and Pocket Books— were tagged “SF” even into the second half of the 1970s. 6. Carter was not, technically, the first to demarcate the terrain so: L. Sprague de Camp does so almost identically in the introductions to his two Pyramid Books anthologies, Swords and Sorcery (1963) and The Spell of Seven (1965), though he uses the labels “Sword and Sorcery” and the qualified “Heroic Fantasy.” But Carter’s accountings go into far greater detail than de Camp’s two- page introductions and were repeated over and over again through doz- ens of BAFS introductions and two books, supported by a publisher who was trying to do something “different.” And with Carter, the label became, simply, “fantasy.” 7.
