The units are designed to be taught in one segment or interspersed throughout a 1-semester health course. The units include a variety of activity choices to meet the needs of students in grades 7-12, with the majority in grade 10. An introduction is followed by a course outcome summary that includes target population, description, and outline of competencies and performance standards. Each unit begins with separate unit outlines for middle school and high school that are comprised of these components: Learning objectives; student activities with time required; and activities for alternate or extended learning. The unit concludes with worksheets, transparency masters, activity sheets, and information sheets. The units cover the following:(1) an introduction to health careers; (2) diagnostic services;(3) therapeutic services;(4) environmental services; and (5) information services. Any omission is unintentional. iv Foreword The Wisconsin Health Careers Awareness curriculum was developed and designed in partnership with Wisconsin Health Occupations Professional Educators (HOPE), health care professionals, secondary-level science educators, andthe Department of Public Instruction's health education consultant and health sciences occupations education specialist to address Standard D-7 in the Wisconsin Model Academic Standards for Health Education. The standard states that "by the end of grade 8 a student will identify potential health careers and by the end of grade 12 a student willevaluate potential health careers based upon interest and abilities." In short, this standarddefines what is to be learned at certain points in time and, from a broad perspective, what performances will be accepted as evidence that the learning has occurred. This curriculum contains activities and lessons at each grade level, instructional materials, and proven instructional techniques. It outlines details of day-to-day schooling at the local level. The people of Wisconsin want public education that ensures that every child has the opportunity for quality learning. I believe that this curriculum will greatly assist educators in preparing students to meet the standard in preparation for graduation while exposing students to the challenging world of health sciences careers. My thanks to those of you that contributed to this important curriculum effort. Elizabeth Burmaster State Superintendent 7 Introduction Many of the fastest growing occupations in Wisconsinare concentrated in health services. Factors contributing to industry growth includeour aging population and its need for increased health services, as well as the increaseduse of medical technology for diagnosis and treatment. This health careers curriculum has been developed tomeet two of the Wisconsin Model Academic Standards for Health Education: D7 in Grade 8- Identify potential health careers. D7 in Grade 12- Evaluate potential health careers based upon interests and abilities. A strong effort has been made to providea self-contained and user-friendly curriculum, which will provide an initial awareness of healthcareer opportunities for all Wisconsin students. Suggested activities are given for both middle school and highschool students, recognizing that most health education courses in Wisconsinare taught between eighth and tenth grades. Lessons can be taught as a five- or ten-day unit, dependingupon time available. In addition, the five segments can be interspersed throughout the healtheducation course to provide maximum flexibility. The chart below showsa cross-reference of activities matched to the required health education course content.     A TRADITION OF SUCCESS ON AND OFF THE ICE Our Mission: The Cap City Cougars Varsity Hockey Program’s mission is to provide a competitive hockey experience at the varsity and junior varsity levels for students currently enrolled in our member schools. Ice hockey, at this level, demands hard work, commitment, self-discipline and a team-first mentality while emphasizing sportsmanship, respect, academic achievement and community service. We strive to inspire our players to stretch their limits and reach for their goals both on and off the ice. Our Program: The Cap City Cougars are a co-op varsity hockey program which includes girls from Madison East High School, Madison La Follette High School, DeForest High School, Waunakee High School, and host Sun Prairie High School. The Cougars begin their 12th season of WIAA competition this year as part of the Badger Conference (Sectional 3), joining the Madison Metro Lynx (Middleton), Badger Thunder (Baraboo), Viroqua High School, the Icebergs (Stoughton) and the Rock County Fury (Beloit) for conference play. Philosphy The coaching staff strongly believes in work ethic, respect for the game, and personal responsibility and promises to use our talents, experience, and love for the game to motivate and teach both on and off the ice. We believe that the game of hockey teaches wonderful life skills like teamwork, passion, integrity, sacrifice and humility and will strive to not only teach the game of hockey to our high school athletes but mentor these young athletes for success later in life. The March 24 luncheon will recognize the accomplishments of the area's outstanding students, educators and administrators. Twenty nine teacher Fellowship recipients, 26 Excellence Scholarship recipients, and 21 Initiative Scholarship recipients will be honored. Principal Leadership award recipient Amy Fassbender is unable to attend the event but will be honored at a luncheon on April 13 in Greenfield.   • Welcome to the 2011-2012 Cap City Cougar Hockey Season
    2 Welcome to the 2011-2012 Cap City Cougar hockey season. The Cougars begin their fifth season of WIAA play this year. The Cougars enter the season following their first ever State Tournament trip. Cap City captured its second Badger Conference title in three years with an unde- feated 10 - 0 record and earned the top seed for the Section 4 play-offs while compiling an overall record of 22 wins, 4 losses and 2 ties. This year’s Cougar team hopes to successfully defend its conference cham- pionship and complete the season by returning to the state tournament. They will be competing in the Schwan Cup in Blaine, MN again this year as well as a Thanksgiving tournament hosted by the three-time defending State Champion St. Croix Valley Fusion. The Cougars have been moved to Sectional 3 this year along with Beloit, Middleton, and Stoughton. The remaining teams in the sectional include Baraboo, Black River Falls, Onalaska and Viroqua. Surely some new playoff rivalries will begin this season while some old rivalries will be renewed. On behalf of the players and coaches, I would like to extend a sincere thank-you to our parents, fans, teachers, administrators, hockey officials, opponents, sponsors and volunteers for supporting our team and making high school girls’ hockey in our area a reality. Without your continued en- ergy and support it would be impossible for these girls to experience the greatest game on earth!     Career and Technical Student Organizations Serving Career and Technical Education Students in Wisconsin 1 Career and Technical Education (CTE) is helping our nation address key challenges such as workforce development, student achievement, economic vitality and global competitiveness. Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs) are key components to strong CTE programs. CTSOs integrate into CTE programs and courses and extend teaching and learning through innovative programs, business and community partnerships and leadership experiences at the school, state and national levels. • CTSOs provide relevant, engaging programs that improve student achievement, reduce dropout rates and help students discover the wide range of career options available. • CTSOs engage the community and local businesses to help students understand global competition and chart effective and efficient pathways through high school and postsecondary education for their personal success. • CTSO programs, such as industry based competitive events and community service, provide students with the opportunity to develop 21st Century Skills focused on creativity, problem solving, teamwork and goal setting. • CTSOs bring relevance to the classroom and prepare students to be college and career ready. We invite you to review this publication to see how Career and Technical Student Organizations are contributing to learning that works in our state. 2 Wisconsin Fact Sheet CTE STATE OVERVIEW At the secondary level, CTE is delivered through comprehensive high schools; career academies, which are schools-within- schools that provide smaller, cohesive personalized learning environments that integrate curriculum and instructional activities around specific career areas; and CTE-specific high schools, which fully integrate core academic subjects with career-specific instruction.
