ABSTRACT Fantasies and Delusions: Billy Joel’s Turn and Return to Classical Music Jie Fang Goh, M.M. Mentor: Jean A. Boyd, Ph.D. In 2001, the release of Fantasies and Delusions officially announced Billy Joel’s remarkable career transition from popular songwriting to classical instrumental music composition. Representing Joel’s eclectic aesthetic that transcends genre, this album features a series of ten solo piano pieces that evoke a variety of musical styles, especially those coming from the Romantic tradition. A collaborative effort with classical pianist Hyung-ki Joo, Joel has mentioned that Fantasies and Delusions is the album closest to his heart and spirit. However, compared to Joel’s popular works, it has barely received any scholarly attention. Given this gap in musicological work on the album, this thesis focuses on the album’s content, creative process, and connection with Billy Joel’s life, career, and artistic identity. Through this thesis, I argue that Fantasies and Delusions is reflective of Joel’s artistic identity as an eclectic composer, a melodist, a Romantic, and a Piano Man. 261. Root Beer Rag Hintergründe von S. Radic Der amerikanische Sänger und Komponist Bill Joel ist vielen bekannt durch seine weltweiten Hits wie z.B. Piano Man, Just the Way you are, Honesty, The longest Time oder Uptown Girl, die auch schon von vielen anderen Interpreten gesungen wurden. In dem ebenfalls weltweiten Nummer 1 Hit “We didn’t start the fire” bringt er das Kunststück fertig, die gesamte amerikanische Geschichte von 1949-1989 in Stichworten zu erzählen. Auf seinem dritten Soloalbum Streetife Serenade veröffentlichte Billy Joel 1974 den Root Beer Rag. Das Stück soll entstanden sein, als Billy Joel sich ein neus Keyboard gekauft hatte und zusammen mit Elton John. Später nahm er eine ausprobieren wollte, was sein neues Instrument CD mit eher klassischen Kompositionen für denn alles so leistet. Herausgekommen ist ein Klavier auf. Im Jahr 2007 kehrte er ins von Billy Joel äußerst virtuos gespieltes Aufnahmestudio zurück und nahm die Single „All Klavierstück, ganz im Stil eines klassischen My Life“ auf. Ragtimes. Streetlife Serenade ist Billy Joel´s drittes Album Und was ist eigentlich Root Beer ? Root Beer und sein zweites in Zusammenarbeit mit dem ist ein alkoholfreies, kohlensäuriges Getränk das Plattenlabel Columbia Records. Streetlife mit Extrakten aus der Wurzelrinde des in Serenade wurde im Oktober 1974 Nordamerika beheimateten Sassafrasbaumes herausgebracht. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt hatte Billy versetzt wird. Es hat also vielmehr Ähnlichkeit mit Joel bereits die Hit-Singles „Piano Man“ und Cola als mit Bier. Diese schon seit 1870 „Capitain Jack“ veröffentlicht. hergestellte Getränk ist ausserhalb Amerikas Dieses Album war leider finanziell gesehen allerdings nur wenig bekannt.

Beresford A Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Approved April 2017 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: Mark Von Hagen, Chair Laurie Manchester Peter Schmelz Aaron Moore ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY August 2017 ABSTRACT This dissertation describes the public sphere that coalesced in the Soviet jazz scene during Josef Stalin’s reign. Scholars debate the extent to which Soviet citizens, especially under Stalin, were coerced into cooperating with the regime through terror; willingly cooperated with the regime out of self-interest; or re-aligned their speech, behavior, and thoughts to conform to Bolshevik ideology and discourse. In all cases, citizens were generally unable to openly express their own opinions on what Soviet society should look like. In this dissertation, I attempt to bridge this gap by analyzing the diverse reactions to jazz music in Josef Stalin’s Soviet Union. I argue that audience engagement with jazz and discussions about the genre in the Soviet press and elsewhere were attempts to grapple with bigger questions of public concern about leisure, morality, ethnicity, cosmopolitanism and patriotism in a socialist society. This jazz public sphere was suppressed in the late 1940s and early 1950s because of Cold War paranoia and fears of foreign influences in Soviet life. In its place, a counterpublic sphere formed, in which jazz enthusiasts expressed views on socialism that were more open and contradictory to official norms. This counterpublic sphere foreshadowed aspects of post-Stalinist Soviet culture. To support my arguments, I employ archival documents such as fan mail and censorship records, periodicals, memoirs, and Stalin-era jazz recordings to determine the themes present in jazz music, how audiences reacted to them, and how these popular reactions overlapped with those of journalists, musicologists, bureaucrats, and composers.
