SOMMERFELTIA 31 (2008) 3 Ain Raitviir in memoriam Our friend, colleague and distinguished mycologist Ain Raitviir passed away in his country home in Tartu County, Estonia on 17 September 2006. He was born on 10 July 1938 in Tallinn (Estonia); after graduating Tartu University in botany in 1961, he obtained his Cand. Biol. (= Ph. D.) degree in 1964 and D. Sc. (Botany) degree in 1987 in Tartu. Since 1961, he was working as a Research Scien- tist in Mycology in the Institute of Zoology and Botany of the Estonian Academy of Sciences (now renamed and reorganised to an Institute of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences of the Estonian University of Life Sciences). During 45 years he published above 150 papers including 10 books on the taxonomy and ecol- ogy of fungi (mainly of Helotiales), described 226 new for science fungal species. He had travelled widely and collected herbarium specimens in the Russian Far East, Central Asia, Greenland and many other remote regions. In 1990-1995 he was the Chief Editor of the popular-scientific journal “Estonian Nature”; he was active as a Co-Chairperson of the Union of Estonian Scientists, and Chair- person of the Estonian Mycological Society. He had wide interests and knowledge on humanities; inter alia, he translated into Estonian Rachel Carson’s book “Silent Spring” and James D. Watson’s “The Double Helix”. Gulden & K. Høiland Gulden, G. & Høiland, K. 2008. ISAM VII at Finse, Norway, 2005. – Sommerfeltia 31: 7-16. Oslo. ISBN 82-7420-045-4. ISSN 0800-6865. BACKGROUND The first International Symposium on Arctic and alpine Mycology, ISAM (FISAM), was held in 1980 at Barrow, Alaska, following an initiative from Gary Laursen who also acted as ISAM’s first presi- dent. Subsequently six more ISAMs have been arranged at intervals of 4 (5) years until 2005, when ISAM VII was arranged in Norway. A quick retrospective on the 25 years reveals that ISAMs have taken place in Arctic as well as in Alpine environments, and that alternations of the session locations between such regions and also the different continents have been accomplished. About one hundred mycologists, from 20 countries, working on arctic-alpine mycology have participated (Table 1). A set of guidelines for organizing future ISAM gatherings in a meaningful way was agreed upon at ISAM II (see Preamble, Box 1). Following each ISAM, proceedings have been issued, containing papers by the participants and co-authors, on arctic-alpine mycology (Box 2). The importance of the ISAMs for the acceleration of mycological research in arctic and alpine environments has been considerable. Much, however, remains to be done in order to bring mycological knowledge from these harsh and mostly lonely environments up to current levels of temperate-boreal mycology. ISAM VII took place at The Alpine Research Centre at Finse in South Norway, a research centre owned and run by the two universities in Bergen and Oslo and established in 1970. The Centre has excellent lodging and laboratory facilities and, best of all, an alpine environment with numerous fungi just outside the front door. ISAM VII IN RETROSPECT Twenty mycologists from eleven countries participated in ISAM VII (Fig. 1). We were lodged at Finse Alpine Research Centre. This has two buildings, of which we occupied the newest, built in 1996, a classroom and conference building including a laboratory with microscopes and other im- portant facilities for biological research and teaching. The session took place at an early stage of the alpine mushroom season (9–15 August); the weather conditions had been good for the development of macromycete sporocarps, with enough rain the weeks before and a relatively high temperature. During the session, the weather was hot and dry with excellent conditions for collecting. Tab. 1. ISAM participants 1980-2005. x = participant, a = article in proceedings.
