Koottikkal GP, : Public toilet construction The Koottikkal Grama Panchayat in has constructed a public toilet in a waiting shed. The project implemented in the crowded area of Koottikkal Grama Panchayat has turned out to be useful for the public. The waiting shed is often frequented by a large number of people. Access to toilets in public places is a serious issue faced by women. This project has made a significant contribution to that gender aspect. The toilets have been built separately for men and women. There are employees who have been specifically assigned for cleaning the toilets. Their work has been monitored regularly by the Grama Panchayat officials. The project has been benefitting about 80 persons on a daily basis. The total project cost is Rs 1,51,647. Pallikkara GP, Kasargod: Family Welfare Centre

Bekal, in Pallikkara Grama Panchayat, is a historically important tourist site of the Kasargod district. The decision of the Grama Panchayat to construct a new Family Welfare Centre is necessitated by the social backwardness of the area. The inhabitants in the area are in need of a place that can provide services related to awareness of immunisation and other communicable diseases. The Grama Panchayat has spent the Performance Grant share of Rs 15,00,000 during 2013-14 to construct a Family Welfare Centre on its own land. The centre provides services to pregnant and lactating mothers, new-born children and other people. The number of beneficiaries comes to about 2000. Thaddesa Mithram 5

Koyilandi Municipality, : Children’s Park

The park can accommodate around 300 children at a time. The number goes up on Saturdays and Sundays. The Panchayat is planning to install more outdoor playing equipment so that more kids will be attracted to the park. The women who accompany the children can relax in the park.

The Koyilandi Municipality in Kozhikode district has constructed a Children’s Park on the main road of Kannur highway on the 20 cents of land owned by the Municipality. The Vanitha (women’s) Canteen in the Kuruva Grama Panchayat of is run by Kudumbashree with the support of the Panchayat. The Panchayat has renovated the canteen with the Performance Grant share of Rs 2,30,000. The project work involves tiling of the canteen hall, construction of new kitchen with a smokeless stove and provision for water facility through borewell. The Panchayat has taken the initiative to ensure the quality of water by the authority concerned and ensured smokeless atmosphere in the kitchen using ceramic tiles, which are eco-friendly. This project is one of the women empowerment projects under Thaddesa Mithram in Malappuram district. Six women of the Kudumbashree units who are running the canteen have been earning Rs 500 each a day. Karimba GP, : LP School Building

Four teachers have been looking after the educational and physical needs of the children. All the 53 schoolchildren are being provided with lunch on working days, besides uniforms, note books, books and pencils. The new school environment has helped the all round development of the children and in reducing the school dropout rate. It also results in better curricular and non -curricular performance. Majority of the beneficiaries belong to SC/ST population. The total project cost of Rs 15,15,017 is met from the Performance Grant.

The Karimba Grama Panchayat in has constructed a three-class room building for Government Lower Primary School, Maruthamkad, a remote and hilly area. The school is meant to meet the educational needs of the tribal and non-tribal families living in Maruthamkad village. The functioning of the school facilitates regular attendance of the children. Kulukkallur Grama Panchayat in Palakkad district has started a Women’s Canteen in the Panchayat office premises on an experimental basis. The aim is to enable the women to be independent by earning a regular income. They serve hygienic and healthy food at an affordable price. The Canteen is owned and operated by 10 Kudumbashree members. Tea, coffee, breakfast and lunch are served on all days and vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian items of the canteen are in demand. The canteen has become popular because of the homely food at reasonable rates. The Balusseri Grama Panchayat in Kozhikode district has constructed the High School-Mundoli Road at a total cost of Rs 5,40,000 met from the Performance Grant share. The road starts from Mundoli and ends in the playground of the Balusseri High School. Metalling and tarring have been done on the 650-metre long, 3-metre wide road. A side wall for the ground has also been constructed. The school has 1200 children in Upper Primary and High School sections. Now they have better road access to the school. With the construction of side wall to the playground the safety of the children too has been ensured. Thaddesa Mithram 11

Purameri GP, Kozhikode: Kunnoththazhe-MIM Road

The Grama Panchayat in Kozhikode district built 1.5-km road linking two wards. The road was in a dilapidated condition making it unusable even for two wheelers. Heavy water flow from the paddy fields along the shoulders of the road during monsoon caused soil erosion. The road is now constructed with culvert and drainage. Hence it is protected from damages as water flows through the culvert. The total project cost of Rs 9,91,977 is met from the Performance Grant share. 12 Summer Sketches – Documenting Success Stories GP, Pathanamthitta: Ayurveda Hospital

The Aranmula Grama Panchayat in has designed a multi-year project during 2013-14 for constructing an Ayurveda hospital at Nervilakam utilising Performance Grant share of Thaddesa Mithram. For the purpose, an amount of Rs 3.24 Lakh was set apart during 2013-14 and Rs 12.34 Lakh during 2014-15. The entire amount has been spent for the project. The site of the building is owned by the Grama Panchayat. The construction of the first phase was completed during 2013-14 and the second phase was completed during 2014-15. The building has sufficient facilities for the hospital including waiting females. The Panchayat has taken the initiative to build an assembly hall to protect children from the sun and rain during the conduct of the school assembly. The total project cost of Rs 2,80,917 is met from the Performance Grant share. This is also the largest government school in the area. Thaddesa Mithram 13 GP, Kozhikode: Ayurveda Dispensary

The Perambra Grama Panchayat in Kozhikode district constructed an Ayurveda Hospital in Pottammel area in Ward No. 12. The hospital was functioning in an old building which lacked essential facilities. Around 100 persons were utilising the outpatient section in the hospital. The Grama Panchayat committee decided to construct a new building with inpatient facilities. Gurunathumannu, a tribal pocket in Seethathode Grama Panchayat of Pathanamthitta district has a Government Tribal Upper Primary (UP) School. The school building was used for both office and classrooms. The Grama Panchayat set apart an amount of Rs 13 Lakh for the construction of a new school building during 2013-14 under the Plan fund. The dispensary has separate toilets for men and women, adequate number of chairs, token system to avoid rush, and safe drinking water facility. People from all parts of the Panchayat have been using the services of the hospital. Free medicines are provided to the patients. The Government Lower Primary School, Chembilode in Edavaka Grama Panchayat of is in a remote hilly area. Eighty students are studying in the school from Class 1st to 4th standard. Most of the students are from the tribal community. The area has four tribal colonies. The school has four classrooms. A personal computer of the school is insufficient to meet the demand. The Grama Panchayat has allotted Rs 3,00,000 from the Performance Grant share for buying electronic equipment for the smart class room. The project includes procuring LCD projector, computers, laptop,

computer tables, computer chairs, 20 baby chairs, printer, amplifier, cordless mike and speakers. The classroom was constructed with the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) fund. Students are provided classes based on Information Technology, science, educational games and UBUNTU software. Relevant documentaries are screened on national days. In accordance with the National Policy for Senior Citizens 2011, the Maniyur Grama Panchayat in Kozhikode district constructed a building to focus on geriatric care. Geriatric health care focuses on outpatient day care and palliative care. The 97.96 sq.m building is situated in the compound of Primary Health Centre (PHC), in ward no. 14 of Maniyur Panchayat. The senior citizens and bedridden patients of the whole Panchayat are the beneficiaries of the project. The total number of registered patients is 256; 102 men and 154 women. Of the 154 women, 75 are above 80 years and widows. The following are the objectives of the project: Increase the facility of palliative care for the benefit of senior citizens and other bedridden patients; Improve community management of palliative care; Promote homecare and outpatient day-care; Develop community palliative care awareness materials; the reduction of death and illness of senior citizens and bed ridden patients in the targeted community.
