  • Translating Korean Humour
KOREAN FILMS NIGHTS 2016 JUNE-OCTOBER HA HA HA translating korean humour KOREAN CULTURAL CENTRE UK INTRODUCTION Exploring the theme of the ‘Korean sense of humour’ which we began in January this year, Korean Film Nights will continue to present a series of exciting titles throughout the remaining half of 2016. We have selected 10 more films which both articulate a particular aspect of the Korean sense of humour as well as represent different approaches to creating comedic films. For those who are new to the film programmes organised by the Korean Cultural Centre UK (KCCUK), Korean Film Nights is our fortnightly free film screening event, which takes place on alternate Thursday evenings at the KCCUK. Ever since its modest beginning in 2008 our Korean Film Nights, working with both established and emerging filmmakers has showcased a wide spectrum of Korean films - from new blockbusters to well-known classics and everything in between. This in-house programme takes audiences on a cinematic journey throughout the year as we run up to the annual London Korean Film Festival which returns with its 11th edition this November. This year’s programme, entitled Ha Ha Ha: Translating Korean Humour, is based on the idea that, though some humour works universally, humour is more often than not local, playing frequently with cultural and linguistic nuances - whether referencing a specific socio- political situation, or making use of word-play or jokes. Though open to debate, British humour, for example, is widely associated with sarcasm and self-ridicule through a deadpan delivery. So what makes Korean humour distinct? In June, we begin with the film Hahaha from which this year’s programme of screenings has affectionately taken its title.

  • 3-24 November the Annual Festival of the Best of Korean Cinema Returns to London for 2011 an Introduction by the London Korean Film Festival Advisor Tony Rayns
The London Korean Film Festival 2011 제6회 런던한국영화제 3-24 November The annual festival of the best of Korean Cinema returns to London for 2011 An Introduction by the London Korean Film Festival Advisor Tony Rayns No film culture in East Asia is more accomplished or varied than South Korea’s, and this annual festival – now in its sixth year! – does Britain a fantastic service by bringing a wide range of new Korean cinema to screens in London and other cities. Most British viewers hadn’t seen a single Korean film as recently as ten years ago, and the frequently-asked-question is: where did all this phenomenal filmmaking come from? The short answer is that South Korea emerged from a long period of ‘darkness’ in 1993, and that the resulting freedoms fuelled a surge in creativity. The longer answer is that the world has rarely seen a more radical overnight transformation of a film industry. Regulation and censorship were swept away, new film festivals and distributors brought a torrent of international films to Korea for the first time, and a new generation of producers, directors, writers and actors seized the chance to make ambitious and exciting films. In the last two decades, South Korea has developed a rich film culture. It encompasses mainstream entertainments, masterly arthouse films, animation, documentary, indie films of all shapes and sizes and even a surge in experimental filmmaking. Backing it all up are new film schools and film studies courses and prolific publications of film magazines and books. The London Korean Film Festival has a very simple aim: to bring a taste of all this to British audiences.

  • Bamcinématek Presents the 11 New York Korean Film Festival, Feb 22
BAMcinématek presents the 11th New York Korean Film Festival, Feb 22—24 Eight films, including one US premiere and three NY premieres Includes the NY premiere of Kim Ki-duk’s controversial Venice prizewinner Pieta and the US premiere of Jo Byeong-ok’s All Bark, No Bite The Wall Street Journal is the title sponsor of BAM Rose Cinemas and BAMcinématek. Brooklyn, NY/Jan 31, 2013—From Friday, February 22, to Sunday, February 24, BAMcinématek and the Korea Society, in partnership with CJ Entertainment, present the 11th New York Korean Film Festival (NYKFF), showcasing the best contemporary films from the cinematically prolific peninsula. BAMcinématek has been a strong champion of Korean cinema, hosting the festival on nine separate occasions, as well as showcasing many other series of Korean films: the first-ever US retrospective of auteur Hong Sang-soo (Woman on the Beach), as well as retrospectives of Park Chan-wook in 2005, Bong Joon-ho in 2010, and Kim Ji-woon in 2011. Since the festival’s inception, Korean film has made many inroads stateside—most notably Park Chan-wook’s fanboy revenge favorite, Oldboy (2003), and Bong Joon-ho’s monster-on-the-loose blockbuster, The Host (2006). Opening the festival on Friday, February 22, is the New York premiere of Kim Ki-duk’s controversial Pieta (2012), which won the top prize at this year’s Venice Film Festival—the first Korean film to do so at any of the three major film festivals. An unholy mix of Christian iconography and carnal appetites, the film follows the unpredictable Oedipal entanglement of a ruthless loan shark and a middle-aged woman who claims to be his long-lost mother (a stunning Cho Min-soo in her breakout role).

LONDON KOREAN 26 OCTOBER – 19 NOVEMBER 2017 www.koreanfilm.co.uk LONSM_영문350날개_문화원.pdf 1 17. 9. 7. 오전 9:51 Welcome to the 12th edition of the London Korean Film Festival. This year we are a week earlier than usual, opening on 26 October and running up to 8 November in London, and then touring to 5 cities around the UK until 19 November. Our programme features 60 titles produced between 1964 and 2017, with several UK and international premieres. Once again, we celebrate the diversity of Korean cinema through nine distinct strands, including the most talked-about contemporary hits, hidden gems from the independent filmmaking scene, works that highlight women's voices, rediscovered classic films, bold documentaries whose influence reaches beyond the screen, as well as the Mise-en-scène Short Film Festival’s awarded films, family-friendly animations, and artists’ moving image works. Following on from the warmly received special focus on women’s cinema last year, we are presenting a special programme on Korean noir. Korean Noir, Illuminating the Dark Side of Society presents key films whose ‘noirness’ has generated critical debate. The programme hopes to offer an overview of how Korean film noir from different periods has adopted and/or paid homage C to the canon of film noir whilst at the same time reflecting the particular M conventions of Korean culture and its cinema. In addition to showcasing 13 films, including two classic masterpieces, Black Hair by Lee Man-hee Y and The Last Witness by Lee Doo-yong, we are also organising a forum CM with prominent noir scholars and filmmakers.
