67th Annual Washington Crossing Reenactment December 08, 2019

Representing the AUSA Monmouth Chapter, Mr Charles Seal, Newsletter Editor, attended the 67th Annual Reenactment of GEN George Washington’s historic crossing of the Delaware River from PA into NJ. A crowd of over 500 watched as about 200 reenactors, dressed in Continental Army uniforms, reenacted the Crossing of the Delaware. Serving as Guest Narrator was MG Mark W Palzer, Commanding General, 99th Readiness Division, US Army Reserve (USAR) at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst (MDL), NJ.

This event commemorated GEN Washington’s actual crossing Dec 25-26, 1776, when he led 2,400 soldiers with 200 horses and 18 cannons across the icy river in Durham boats to conduct a surprise attack on enemy forces in Trenton. “The crossing was not completed until four in the morning, and then the nine-mile march to Trenton began in the face of the blustery nor’easter.” said MG Palzer. Approximately 1,500 Hessian mercenaries, who had been hired from Prussia by King George of England, were in winter quarters in Trenton, unaware that Washington was about to attack. “Washington achieved the surprise he had hoped for, which allowed his troops to seize the high ground and thereby control the battle with their cannons; within 45 minutes, the fighting was over,” Palzer explained. “The Continental Army had its first and most significant victory of the War for Independence. Five years later, after the British surrender at Yorktown, British General Cornwallis, meeting Washington face-to-face for the first time, humbly informed the American General that the American Revolution was won the night they crossed the Delaware River,” Palzer said. “Now, let your imagination travel back in time to that bitter winter day of 1776,” Palzer told the crowd as the re-enactment began. “Try to imagine what it was like to be a Soldier in that ragtag military. Imagine the fear, the trepidation, the suffering. But most of all, imagine the valor and the bravery, and the sacrifices which were made to secure the freedoms we enjoy today.”

Casualties at the Battle of Trenton: The Americans suffered 4 wounded casualties. It is said that in addition 2 American soldiers froze to death. The Hessians suffered 20 killed, about 100 wounded and 1,000 were captured.

The convoy of trucks, motorcycles and cars stops at schools, monuments, Veterans’ homes and communities along the way to remind people of the importance of supporting our Veterans. On December 11th, the convoy arrived at the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial and 366 wreaths were placed at the Memorial Wall, one for every black granite panel of the Wall, each representing a day of the year. Each of the 1,563 New Jerseyans who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Vietnam War are listed on the Wall by date of casualty. Wreaths were also presented to individuals representing the United States Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine, POW/MIA and Gold Star Mothers as well as 50 wreaths presented to Gold Star Families. Following the Wreath Laying Ceremony, the convoy participants were able to stop at the adjacent Vietnam Era Museum, enjoy lunch and tour the museum prior to continuing their journey to Arlington National Cemetery to deliver wreaths for the December 14th National Wreaths Across America Day. One man’s annual tribute to our Veterans inspired a legion of volunteers and gave rise to the Wreaths Across America (WAA). In 1960, Mr Morrill Worcester was a 12 year old paper boy in Maine when he won a trip to Washington DC. His visit to Arlington National Cemetery made an especially indelible impression on him. In 1971, he founded the Worcester Wreath Company in Harrington, ME. In 1992, the Worcester Wreath Company found themselves with a surplus of wreaths nearing the end of the holiday season. Remembering his boyhood experience at Arlington, Worcester was reminded that his good fortune was due, in large part, to the Veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. With the aid of Maine Senator Olympia Snowe, arrangements were made for the surplus wreaths to be placed at Arlington. This annual tribute went on quietly for several years, until 2005, when a photo of the stones at Arlington, adorned with wreaths and covered in snow, went viral and circulated around the internet. In 2007, spurred by thousands of requests to help with wreath donations, Worcester set up Wreaths Across America (WAA), a 501(c) (3) non-profit, to accommodate and honor the spirit of the donations. The Worcester Wreath Company is one of the largest donors of wreaths to WAA and produces the sponsored wreaths at a discounted market price. In 2014, WAA, with its national network of volunteers, laid over 700,000 wreaths at 1,000 locations in the United States, including the Memorials at Pearl Harbor, Bunker Hill, Valley Forge and the sites of the September 11 tragedies. This was accomplished with help from 2,047 fundraising groups, corporate contributions, trucking & shipping donations and thousands of helping hands. Also in 2014, WAA’s goal of covering Arlington National Cemetery was finally met with the placement of 226,525 wreaths.

The Independence Fund, a National Non-Profit Organization dedicated to help rebuild the lives of the Nation’s most seriously wounded Veterans, presented SSG (R) Michael Minard, an AUSA Monmouth Chapter Member, with a custom built all- terrain Tracked Wheelchair during The Bill O’Reilly Show at the Paramount Theater in Huntington Beach, Long Island, NY. Mrs Kit Roache, VP Programs, AUSA Monmouth Chapter, accompanied SSG (R) Minard to the Show with transportation provided by Mr Steve Marchi, owner and founder of All Occasion Limousine, a Monmouth Chapter L to R - Kit Roache, Community Partner. SSG (R) Michael Minard During the Show, Best Selling Author and renowned Television and Radio Commentator Mr Bill O’Reilly, along with The Independence Fund’s CEO Sarah Verardo, brought SSG (R) Minard onstage and presented him with the life changing tracked wheelchair after which he responded, in typical humble fashion of a hero, to questions related to his Military Service. The Independence Fund identified SSG (R) Michael Minard as a Veteran in need; teamed with Homes For Our Troops (HFOT), a Top-Rated Veterans and Military Charity; acquired the Tracked Wheelchair and delivered it to his home in Union Beach, NJ. Since its formation in 2007, The Independence Fund has given over 2,400 all-terrain tracked wheelchairs to Warfighters around the country who have suffered catastrophic wounds and illness as a part of their Service to the country. The relationship between Mr. O’Reilly and the The Independence Fund began nearly a decade ago when the political commentator toured Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD and saw firsthand both the trauma caused by war and the incredible spirit of the Nation’s Wounded Warfighters. On October 1, 2008, Army Staff Sergeant Michael Minard was serving his third deployment in Iraq with the 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment. While on a reconnaissance patrol in , SSG Minard was hit by a roadside bomb and was catastrophically wounded. The blast resulted in the loss of both legs. After several surgeries and Sarah Verardo rehabilitation, he was medically retired from the Army.
