The Critic as Producer: Essays on Architecture Columbia University GSAPP / Fall 2014 James Graham, [email protected] This seminar will examine the role of critics, criticism, and the essay form in shaping how we understand architecture, in public life and within architectural discourse. We will consider reviews as testing grounds for the author’s own intellectual commitments (theoretical, architectural, political) as those ideas are refracted through the work of others. Readings will include foundational texts in critical theory, histories of reviewing and essay writing, and predominantly the essays themselves. We will explore the complex responses to buildings across generational shifts through selected case studies, and we will speak with practitioners of the review in various forms. Finally, we will consider current trajectories within architectural writing and publishing, particularly a recent resurgence in the essay format (spawned in part by the rise of digital publication formats). This seminar is being taught in conjunction with the launch of The Avery Review, a new digital journal for critical essays on architecture run by the GSAPP Office of Publications (www.averyreview.com). While the essays there will not be required reading, the seminar is intended in part to help shape the direction of the journal and to explore the theoretical and historical underpinnings of this mode of writing, and students are asked to follow the journal so that it might enter our conversations from time to time. Students will be expected to participate vigorously in all class discussions, take an active role in leading the seminar once in the course of the semester, complete one group presentation on an architectural magazine or journal, and produce their own critical work in the form of two essays (strictly 2,000–3,000 words). -

It takes into account the network of entities that, under the leadership and oversight of ETA, have developed the political, economic, cultural, support and propaganda agenda of their terrorist project. The study focuses in particular on the periods 1993-2002 and 2003-2010, in order to observe the changes in the financing of terrorism after the outlawing of Batasuna , ETA's political wing. The results show the significant role of public subsidies in finance the terrorist network. It also proves that the outlawing of Batasuna caused a major change in that funding, especially due to the difficulty that since 2002, the ETA related organizations had to confront to obtain subsidies from the Basque Government and other public authorities. THE NEW YORKER’S CALVIN TOMKINS IN CONVERSATION WITH MENIL DIRECTOR JOSEF HELFENSTEIN – OCTOBER 17 Special program in a series celebrating the museum’s 25th anniversary HOUSTON, TX, September 27, 2012 — As the veteran art writer for The New Yorker, Calvin Tomkins is one of the pioneers of the magazine’s famed profiles — long-form journalism at its best. Prominent among his subjects over the years have been many of the artists, architects and curators who were involved in creating the Menil Collection — including Dominique de Menil, whom Tomkins profiled in 1998, a few months after her death, in a glowing article titled “The Benefactor”, and the museum’s founding director Walter Hopps. As part of this fall’s 25th anniversary celebrations, Calvin Tomkins will make an exceptional visit to Houston on October 17 to engage in a public conversation with Menil Director Josef Helfenstein. The event, which is free of charge, starts at 7:00 pm in the museum foyer. Seating is limited. The conversation, titled Making a Museum, promises to shed light on Tomkins’s vivid and highly personal view of John and Dominique de Menil, as well as events in the art world since the Menil’s opening in 1987. The audience will also have the opportunity to ask questions of Mr. Tomkins and Mr. Helfenstein. Over the years, Tomkins has given his readers a behind-the-scenes chronicle of the cultural life of their times, as seen through the personalities and achievements of people including Philip Johnson, John Cage, Merce Cunningham, Pontus Hultén, Renzo Piano, and Robert Rauschenberg − all of whom have been associated with the Menil Collection. -

Please contact the author for permission to quote or cite material from this paper. 2 Introduction Debates about the effects of globalization during the past few years often focus on the question of whether the rapid migrations of people, images, and capital have reduced differences between national cultures, or just given them a wider territory and more means of expression. Skeptics argue that this is an age-old question that can never be resolved. In every era, trade routes and travelers have carried new ideas and materials across great distances, permitting indigenous groups to create fusions that gradually grow into new historical traditions. From this point of view, current global trends are neither stranger nor more innovative than “native” weavers who integrate imported dyes into traditional rug patterns or musicians who learn to play traditional instruments in a foreign rhythm. -

Known all over the world for his buildings, many of which have attained iconic status, Frank Gehry has revolutionised architecture’s aesthetics, its social and cultural role, and its relationship to the city. It was in Los Angeles, in the early 1960s, that Gehry opened his own office as an architect. There he engaged with the California art scene, becoming friends with artists such as Ed Ruscha, Richard Serra, Claes Oldenburg, Larry Bell, and Ron Davis. His encounter with the works of Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns would open the way to a transformation of his practice as an architect, for which his own, now world-famous, house at Santa Monica would serve as a manifesto. Frank Gehry’s work has since then been based on the interrogation of architecture’s means of expression, a process that has brought with it new methods of design and a new approach to materials, with for example the use of such “poor” materials as cardboard, sheet steel and industrial wire mesh. -

Working Papers in Economic History May 2011 WP 11-04 Hunger in Hell’s Kitchen. Family Living Conditions during Spanish Industrialization. The Bilbao Estuary, 1914-1935. Juan Carlos Rojo Cagigal and Stefan Houpt Abstract Did the late industrialization in Europe’s periphery improve life for its urban class? This paper examines family living conditions in northern Spain during late industrialization in the interwar period. We concentrate on the Basque region, one of the emerging industrial areas from the 1870s on. Historiography holds that in the medium-term urban development and industrialization increased real wages and overall standards of living. We contrast this empirically by examining the effects of income shocks on families using high frequency data from 1914 until 1936. These contrasts introduce nutritional adequacy of family diets as an additional way of measuring living conditions. Our results indicate that real income did not improve and that demographic and social deprivation variables were highly responsive to short term economic shocks. This response points to the fragility of urban breadwinner families even during later phases of industrialization; the urban penalty was by far not being compensated by the higher nominal wages received. Making Africa showcases the work of over 120 artists and designers from and within Africa working in an exhilarating range of media including sculpture, fashion, furniture, architecture, film, photography, maps, digital comics, graphic and web design, and more. The exhibition presents Africa as a hub of experimentation—and as a driving force in the development of design in the twenty-first century. Making Africa reconsiders and expands definitions of both design and Africa—a shift in perspective symbolized by Kenyan artist Cyrus Kabiru’s sculptural C-Stunner eyeglasses made of found materials (2012). The exhibition offers a vision of Africa in the twenty-first century as a place of unbounded optimism, rapid growth, and massive cultural transformation. This spirit echoes that of the mid- twentieth century, when a young generation of Africans, celebrating their liberation from colonization, self-assuredly asserted themselves on a global stage. The exhibition draws parallels to that era by juxtaposing select examples of mid-twentieth-century art and design with contemporary works. “The Blanton is thrilled to present this deeply insightful and relevant exhibition to Austin’s creative community,” said Blanton director Simone Wicha. -
