The Sacrament of Baptism El Sacramento del Bautismo Why Baptism? As he ascended into heaven, Jesus commanded the eleven ¿Por qué bautismo? disciples to “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, Cuando Él ascendió al cielo, Jesús mandó a los once discípulos a "Por tanto, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and vayan y hagan discípulos de todas las naciones, bautizándolos en el nombre del of the holy Spirit,...” (Mt 28:19) This is understood to signify Padre y del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo,..." (Mt 28: 19) Esto se entiende que significa that baptism is the means of entrance into the community of que el bautismo es el medio de entrada a la comunidad del resucitado, la Iglesia. the risen one, the Church. The effect of baptism is understood El efecto del bautismo es entendido que trae la unión del bautizado con el Padre, to bring the union of the one baptized with the Father, Son, Hijo y Espíritu Santo. [NAB Nota 28:19] and holy Spirit. [NAB foot note 28:19] Why is this so important for each of us, from the moment of ¿Por qué es tan importante para cada uno de nosotros, desde el momento del birth? Because, when and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, nacimiento? Porque, cuando Adán y Eva comieron el fruto prohibido, todos we all know, Original Sin entered the world. Most of us sabemos, que el Pecado Original entró al mundo. La mayoría de nosotros remember being told that “it separated us from God”. recordamos que nos decían que "nos separaba de Dios". Sin embargo, lo que no However, what was not made extremely clear, that “separated fue muy claro es que "separado de Dios" significa que cuando tomamos nuestro from God” means that when we take our last breath on earth, último aliento en la tierra, estábamos permanentemente separados de Dios we were permanently separated from God because we are porque estamos MUERTOS! Sin ninguna esperanza de cumplir con el plan de Dios DEAD! No hope of fulfilling God’s plan for each of us from para cada uno de nosotros desde el principio del tiempo... que cada uno de the beginning of time…that each of us, including Adam and nosotros, incluyendo a Adán y Eva, nunca nos separaríamos de Dios! Eve, would never be separated from God! Thus, Jesus gave us the gift of being forever united with God Así, Jesús nos dio el regalo de estar unidos para siempre con Dios en el in the Sacrament of Baptism. This first and primary sacrament Sacramento del Bautismo. Este primer y principal Sacramento borra el Pecado erases Original Sin from our soul, removing the eternal death Original de nuestra alma, quitando la muerte eterna dándonos la promesa de vida and giving us the promise of Eternal Life with the Holy eterna con la Santísima Trinidad! Trinity! Please note, that we do not baptize bodies, but the water and Tenga en cuenta que no bautizamos a los cuerpos, pero el agua y las palabras, en words, together, erase Original Sin from the soul. Therefore, conjunto, borran el Pecado Original del alma. Por lo tanto, cuando las personas when people die without the sacrament of baptism, and family mueren sin el Sacramento del Bautismo, y la familia nos pide bautizar a su ser asks us to baptize their deceased loved one, we must say “No, querido fallecido, hay que decir "No, no puedo"... porque el alma ya ha salido del I can’t”…because the soul has already departed from the cuerpo. (Nunca es porque no queremos, si no porque no podemos bautizar a body. (It is never because we don’t want to; we are unable to quien se ha ido a la muerte). baptize that which has departed upon death.) Lo que nos lleva a la sincronización de la recepción de este Sacramento: "tan Which brings us to the timing of receiving this first pronto después del nacimiento como sea posible". Puesto que ahora sacrament: “as soon after birth as possible”. Since we now entendemos la importancia de quitar el Pecado Original de nuestra alma, para understand the importance of removing Original Sin from our soul, to give each of us the gift of everlasting life, it makes dar a cada uno de nosotros el don de la vida eterna, hace que queramos este sense that we would want this gift for our child as soon as regalo para nuestro hijo/a tan pronto como sea posible. "Íntimamente ligado a la possible. “Intimately linked to Confirmation and to Eucharist, Confirmación y Eucaristía, el Bautismo es, con estos dos sacramentos, Iniciación Baptism is, with these two sacraments, Christian Initiation. WHY DO WE DO THAT? - CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED Queson: Our prayer group has been reading the lives of some , and we were struck by how some of them thought they were such sinners. Why would such holy people think they had such serious sin?

Answer: Professional athletes pracce the fundamentals of their sport over and over again, reaching for beer form, consistency, and beer performance. They focus on the basics, review past performances, and visualize greater success. Pracce makes beer, if not perfect!

Spiritual masters such as the saints also looked for perfecon. They pracced their faith in the search for holi- ness, grace, and virtue. Through sacraments, prayer, study, good works, and penance, they raised their level of awareness, their sensivity to the presence of God, the demands of the Gospel, and the workings of the Holy Spirit. They examined their consciences daily, reviewing the day for moments of failure and mes that they could have been more virtuous in one way or another. They resolved to do beer, be more aenve and alert!

Therefore, anything that would distract them or interfere with their relaonship with God would be like a small black spot on a bright white wall -- you can't miss it! The great saints were aware of sin and the presence of evil because they were so tuned in to the struggle between good and evil that was fought in their own lives, hearts, and souls. We must guard against becoming desensized to sin in our lives and unaware of the harm it causes us. A goal of any spiritual pracce is to become more aware of our sinfulness so that we seek God's forgiving and healing love.

4 An an, by VATICAN CORNER definion is a person who is opposed to the legimately elected Pope and makes a significant compeng claim to be the Pope. At various mes between the 3rd and mid 15th centuries, an were supported by a substanal number of cardinals and non-religious monarchs. About forty men hold the dubious disncon of being anpopes. You would think that the concept of an anpope would be straight forward, however it is not always so, and can be quite complicated. The problem is that standard procedures for elecng the Pope were not always followed and the procedures have changed over me. A duly elected Pope remains Pope unl he dies or resigns as has happened seven mes so far. So if a Pope is removed from his office and has not died or resigned then he is sll the Pope, and anymore claiming to be Pope is an anpope. In the first thousand years of , priests and deacons elected the Pope, while a er that me it became the of the College of Cardinals. The papal elecon procedures is controlled by the current Pope at the me, and he can make any changes he wants to that procedure. His changes remain in effect unl a newly elected Pope changes them again. Any papal claimant not following the current elecon procedures is also an anpope. Since all anpopes are defying Church authority in making their claim to be Pope, they have all been harmful to the Church, although a few have later reformed and given up their claim. But for some reason somemes not following the elecon rules does not maer. Pope Innocent II was elected in secret by only a minority of cardinals, but he is treated as a legimate Pope today. To complicated things more, the Vacan over me has moved names back and forth between the official list of Popes and the list of anpopes because those in charge have changed their minds. There sll remain four instances where it is not absolutely clear if someone was a legimate Pope or an anpope. And moral character doesn’t maer either, since some of the legimate Popes lead terrible lives, while the first anpope, Hippolytus as an example was made a . Hippolytus was part of a group of conservave church leaders who opposed Pope Callixtus I (217-222) who gave absoluon to those Chrisans that had commied grave sins like adultery. Hippolytus was the leader of the Greek speaking Chrisans in and he allowed himself to be elected as a rival Pope. For 15 years he opposed the legimately elected leaders: Pope Urban I and Pope Ponan. He and Pope Ponan were persecuted by the Roman Emperor Maximinus Thrax and were exiled together to the mines in Sardinia where they died. It is likely that before his death Hippolytus reconciled with the legimate secon of the Church because later had the bodies of both men interred in Rome with Hippolytus’ placed in a cemetery, given the rank of priest and considered a martyr. Legend has it that Hippolytus was dragged to death by horses, and he was considered the patron saint of horses during the Middle Ages. Sources: thoughtco.com, medievalists.net, wikipedia.com
