Last month, an American man named John Allen Chau was killed by the native people of . This small island is located in the Bay of Bengal, west of India.

Chau was a missionary who went onto the island because he wanted the native people to accept Christianity. But this tribe has had no contact with the outside world. They had no idea why Chau was coming onto their island, and they reacted with violence.

The incident brought a lot of attention to this tribe, who are referred to as the . Although India is technically responsible for the island, its government has no contact with the people there. However, India protects the island and has made it illegal for outsiders to visit since it could be dangerous for them as well as for the Sentinelese.

One reason outsiders are a threat to the Sentinelese is that they are not likely to have immunity from germs that outsiders could bring. Even a common cold could wipe out the entire tribe.

The Sentinelese are thought to be the most isolated group of people in the world. Very little is known about them, but some experts think their ancestors may have migrated from Africa tens of thousands of years ago.

Today, the population is estimated at no more than 100. They are the only inhabitants of the island, and they have resisted contact with the outside world for hundreds of years.

Tribes that have no communication with the outside world are often referred to as “uncontacted.” Around the world, about 100 uncontacted tribes continue to exist today.

Besides North Sentinel and its nearby islands, two other regions hold most of the world’s remaining uncontacted peoples. One is the island of New Guinea, which is north of and west of Indonesia. The other straddles several South American countries, and is known as the Uncontacted Frontier.

The Uncontacted Frontier includes parts of , , and Bolivia. This region is believed to have more uncontacted tribes than anywhere else on Earth. Some estimate the population of uncontacted people in this part of the world at around 3,000. Because these tribes live deep in the , they are very hard for outsiders to get to.

However, the amount of land available to these tribes, especially in , is shrinking. Some parts of the Amazon rainforest have been cut down for farms and other types of development. In addition to bringing in diseases that could be dangerous to the tribes, outsiders may also take over land for their own use and bring environmental pollution.
