During the early planning stage, Iwakami decided not to adapt an Puella Magi Madoka Magica: v. 2 work to give Shinbo more freedom in his direction style. Another goal of the project was to develop an that would appeal to a wider audience than the usual demographic for media within the magical girl subgenre. Iwakami and Shinbo intended their series to be accessible to "the general anime fan". Shinbo then asked Gen Urobuchi to work on the project as a scriptwriter and Ume Aoki as a character designer. Takahiro Kishida was engaged to adapt Aoki's character designs for the television series. In his role as producer, Iwakami took a mostly hands- off approach. Because Puella Magi Madoka Magica is an original series rather than an adaptation of an existing work, his main goal was "coming up with a high-quality piece of entertainment". After helping to recruit the staff, he allowed them freedom to develop the content of the story, providing minimal guidance. After viewing the character designs that Aoki created, he was sure he could trust the creative talent of the team. In an interview with Anime News Network after the series finished airing in Japan, Iwakami said, "I don't matter much; it's up to those talents to do their work. If something comes to a stand-still I might intervene, but they did an excellent job and I was very happy seeing the results in episode one. Scott Green of Ain't Puella Magi Madoka Magica: v. 2 Cool News called the series "hugely admirable"; he praised the animation team's attention to detail, stating that the series "would not work nearly as well if the characters in general and as magical girls specifically weren't presented so spectacularly winningly by the production". Anime reviewer Tim Jones criticized the show's "weak character development" but also called it "beautiful, well-written, and surprisingly dark", and gave it four out of five stars. Jones also commended the unique animation and design of the backdrops shown during witch fights, which he described as "surreal, beautiful, [and] trippy". In his review of the three BD volumes of the anime series, Zac Bertschy of Anime News Network characterized the story as very emotionally dark and "one of the most ambitious and beautiful anime series in recent memory. Awarding the series five stars out of five, Common Sense Media wrote that the "animation style is full of fluid motion and attention to detail that makes it a uniquely pleasurable experience to watch" and "the main characters [are] well developed and its hard not to get attached to them as the story progresses". Again a great volume, there's literally no flaws with this series. The story is great, the artwork is beautiful, and it just all round amazing! I can't wait to get to the final volume, which honestly I'm never ready for! View 2 comments. Some of the fight scenes are really messy and I can't make out what's going on. I can't even really tell what the witches look like. The story is your typical magical girl fare, but also It's way more mature than any other I've read, and I like that there's death and blood and not just transformations and monsters of the week. There's Puella Magi Madoka Magica: v. 2 a really interesting Puella Magi Madoka Magica: v. 2 underlying everything that I can't wait to 3. There's also a really interesting mystery underlying everything that I can't wait to see play out. Unfortunately, there hasn't been much character development yet, and I think by volume two there should be a lot more than what's been given. Each volume Puella Magi Madoka Magica: v. 2 been really short and hasn't really delved deeply into anything other than the magical girl parts. I'd like to see more of Madoka's and Sayaka's and the other girls' everyday lives. Other than that, the story is definitely interesting enough for me to want to continue on, and quite possibly check out the anime as well, which I think is probably better than the manga. And I kind of want a stuffed now too, he's just so adorably evil. View all 5 comments. Sep 20, Katie Kitkatscanread rated it liked it. This one was a bit confusing and odd at times. Aug 17, Brittany rated it liked it Shelves: readmanga-graphic-novels. Still enjoy the artwork greatly and really liked where the end of the volume was going. I want to know more about Homura! There were also a few great lines "You get drunk on your own "correctness" and the more stubborn you get". Jul 24, Nicko Moknu rated it really liked it Shelves: misc-books. Read at your own risk! Alas there are no new character designs that I could find pretty, but seeing recurring characters, made me realise something. This volume focused more on Sayaka's inner turmoil and her strug Spoilers! This volume focused more on Sayaka's inner turmoil and her struggle to cope with her new Magical Girl power which is closer to the anime than the first volume managed to do. Yet again the transitions are rather awkward and quick, like they where there, but here they kinna made more sense and I finally felt some atmosphere. And some chills down my spine, which is good. Giving Kyuubey expressions defeats the purpose of their mission. Their mission is not to care or feel worry about the Magical Girls or even show hints triumph when their goals are met. I was actually pleasant surprised by this volume and the way it conveyed the second part of the Madoka Magica story. My other reviews :D Oct 11, Mira Meteo rated it it was amazing Shelves: manga-and-graphic-novels5-star. This was much better than the first volume of the manga. The first volume was good, but this one was just great, wow. This is fairly more violent than the first one, and there's a bit more blood, too. But still just amazing. It really tugs on your feels. Also, this makes me want to start shipping HomuMado Homura x Madoka. When I was watching the anime for the first time, I didn't really notice the subtext, but reading this manga, you'll understand when you get to the part haha. Also, Manga! Kyuub This was much better than the first volume of the manga. Kyuubey is way creepier than the anime version, in my opinion. Giving him facial expressions adds to his, what's the word I'm looking for, character? I have no clue, whatever. Can't wait to read how they pull off the last four episodes in the next volume :D Another great translation by Yen Press! Madoka fans will LOVE this. Hopefully Yen or someone else here in the States will license the other two Madoka series Kasumi Magica and Oriko Magica if this sells enough. While I did not read these manga in order I read the different story first, when it was probably supposed to go lastI had already seen the anime and movies so I have an idea of how twisted this story is supposed to be. If you like plot twists, boy are you in for it, with the Madoka series. This series or sets This is for all three volumes of this series, though I tried to not put too many plot spoilers in this review. Combined with the first one this duology consists of a 4 hour film that synthesizes the plot of thre TV series and cuts Puella Magi Madoka Magica: v. 2 the fat, making it into an ever more powerful experience. So while some people may be disappointed that it isn't very different from the series in my opinion it does what it should since it only improves it without detracting elements that would make the series weaker.
