ABSTRACT Jeremy Andrean Setiono. (2019). The Importance of Guiding Figure and Interaction Between Characters in Waver Velvet’s Character Development in Urobuchi’s Fate/Zero. Yogyakarta: Department of English Letters, Faculty of Letters, Universitas Sanata Dharma.

This undergraduate thesis discusses a light novel written by Urobuchi Gen, entitled Fate/Zero, using psychological approach to determine the development of character and personality of Waver Velvet. Fate/Zero takes the story in a fictional city of Fuyuki where the Holy Grail War happens. Fate/Zero is interesting because the story and the characters run deep and contain twist that is unpredictable.

The writer formulates three problems. First, what kind of person Waver is before the Holy Grail War. Second, what kind of character Rider is, and third, Rider’s importance in Waver’s character development.

To analyze the problem, the writer uses psychological approach from Rene Wellek and Austin Warren and uses theories related to the matter. First is theories of character and characterization from experts Hans P. Guth and M.H Abrams, second is theories of Character Development taken from books written by C. Carter Colwell and third is theories of personality development from Elizabeth Hurlock. The data about story comes from novel from volume one to volume four and data regarding the theories came from essay, book from experts, journal, and thesis.

The result of analysis are, first of all, Waver’s personality in the beginning is self-centered, arrogant, naïve, and motivated with addition of narcissist persona and round character; second, Rider is a contradiction of Waver characteristic because he is someone you see to have traits like experienced, anti-nihilist, heroic, nice, a teacher like persona which are important element as a guiding figure; third Rider’s importance in Waver’s character development lead Waver to gain positive development because Rider’s importance as guiding figure. As a guiding figure, Rider’s role is to guide Waver to become better person. Because of that role, Rider is vital to Waver development as a mentor, figure of Hero, father figure, lifetime best friend, and as a king that retainers want to follow until the end. All these factors lead Waver from being spoiled kid into a real man in another story.

Keywords: Character development, guiding figure, personality development, Fate/Zero.

ABSTRAK

Jeremy Andrean Setiono. (2019). The Importance of Guiding Figure and Interaction Between Characters in Waver Velvet’s Character Development in Urobuchi’s Fate/Zero. Yogyakarta: Program Studi Sastra Inggris, Fakultas Sastra, Universitas Sanata Dharma.

Masalah pertama membahas seperti apakah karakter Waver Velvet sebelum Perang Cawan Suci.

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study Character development is something that we often find in literature

such as novel, children story, movie, drama, and other media of literature.

What can incite the development is various elements depending on how the

story is told toward the reader and of course it also depends on how the writer

decides which character will be a round character or a flat one. Character

Development can be depicted like what Hellen Keller once wrote in Hellen

Keller’s Journal

Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired and success achieved (Hellen Keller, 1936, p.60).

Character development can be and is often seen in main character of

the story or can be the antagonist who can become the protagonist friend or

rival who can make the story more interesting and this kind of development

can make the antagonist character more popular than protagonist often

unavoidable. Character development is actually interesting because it can be

applied not to the protagonist and the antagonist only but also to the sub-

character or the supporting character making the story interesting especially

when the sub character get their own background. The difference between

developments can be based on the interaction between character especially

with ‘Guiding Figure’ in novel or literature. The ‘guiding figure’ can be

described as someone who will decide where the development go and it can be

1

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

2

good or bad development depending on how the ‘guiding figure’ interacts with the character. One of the ‘guiding figures’ that will be mentioned is Rider and the guided character is no other than Rider’s master, Waver Velvet from Light

Novel Fate/Zero.

Fate/Zero is a light novel written by Urobuchi Gen and Illustrated by

Takeuchi Takashi released by Type-moon in 2006 as one of the Type-Moon franchise of ‘Fate’ series which became prequel for Fate/Stay

Night. Nasu Kinoko the head of Type-moon stated that he was jealous about how Gen Urobuchi described Rider and decided to create character similar to

Rider especially when Rider managed to become number one male character in second animation award in 2012. The story takes place in fictional city named Fuyuki where the fourth Holy Grail War occur to gain possession of omnipotent magic tool called Holy Grail which has the ability to grant the wish of the winner. The participant of the war consists of seven Masters along their summoned ‘Servant’. Master here is known as the participant of the war which have many different backgrounds such as mercenary, magus from well- known family, priest from church which can be considered as observer of war to make sure that the Holy Grail War is unknown toward commoner and many other background that can be find in the story. The rule of War is the last one standing in war and the winner will get the Holy Grail. Not only ‘Master’ who will become the participant, their ‘Servant’ will also participate to help their

‘Master’ win the War. Servant is a being that is summoned via Holy Grail’s power and just like the number of participants, the primary servants which are

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

3

summoned by Holy Grail also will be seven and each servant will assist their master in winning the war.

As the Holy Grail War progressed many things happened. Servants vanish or retire from battle, one of the Masters was killed by other Master and scheme from church and one of the servant is involved until it reaches unexpected ending. Among one of the seven Masters, was Waver Velvet a student from Clock Tower a place where young magus were trained to be upstanding one participates in Holy Grail War by chance after steals his mentor relic and went to Fuyuki City in Japan where the Holy Grail War will be held.

Using his mentor stolen relic, Waver managed to summon Rider class servant with his servant true identity is Alexander the Great or Iskandar Zulkarnain as he was called in eastern region of world during his historical campaign in conquering Asia. The character development of Waver is mainly caused by the differences in his character and his servant character especially with Rider attitude toward his master. This difference caused their relationship more like father and son relationship rather than master and servant relationship. With their unique relationship unlike other masters and servants, Rider who is more experienced in life and with help of Holy Grail which provides him knowledge from past until today, he can be considered as Waver’s guiding figure as the story progress.

Waver at first can be considered as ‘spoiled brat’ who can be described as a narcissist who thinks himself as a genius. In the story he is also often shown as a coward, short tempered person and tends to show his

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

4

inferiority complex as both master and magus despite owning first rate servant like Iskandar or Alexander the Great. He also participates in Holy Grail War just to proof that he is a genius by the mage association. He also has a hard time coping with Iskandar’s personality that is self-centered but noble and physically overbearing. Because the combination of their personality, Waver almost fall into despair when he and Rider meet other servants for the first time as Waver is tormented by his mentor who is also the participant of the war but quickly surprised by Rider’s action that defended him from Waver’s mentor torment.

As the story progresses, readers may find that their first impression about Waver is wrong because of his quality seen in story and Rider is able to interpret Waver true quality like when Waver able to locate one of his enemy hideout by using simplest or worst way in magic user point view. The War keeps on continue and so does Waver and Rider’s bonds are become stronger as Waver understand Rider and why his servant has such attitude and charisma he doesn’t have and this lead Waver to become more mature as he saw the cruelty of Holy Grail War like when he saw what Caster and his Master atrocities toward children and what they did to the body of the children.

The turning point for Waver is at the end of the Holy Grail War when his Servant, Rider was defeated by Archer. Archer walks toward Waver and

Waver, remembering all of his experiences with Rider stood before the King of

Heroes Gilgamesh, Archer’s real name. Waver shows extraordinary courage

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

5

and loyalty which impress Archer resulting Archer to spare him which is unusual for Archer himself.

After the war, Waver decided he wants to go traveling, forgetting all stuffs about magic. This action is caused by the talk with Rider about his limited point view and his advice to take another view of world not only from point view of magic user but as a normal human from someone he acknowledge as king.

It can be concluded, Waver interaction with Rider gave him a good development to become more mature despite the harsh reality he has to face in

Holy Grail War. Despite Rider’s position as Waver’s servant he is able to act as a guiding figure for his master. Thus we can also see how guiding figure can become important element in character development to guide certain character to be what guiding figure wish.

The reason this topic is chosen is because guiding figure is applicable in real life. Some people can be considered lost and, because of that they in need something or someone that can guide them. However, depending on the guiding figure that person can either gain good development which can be called development or bad development that sometimes regarded as regression.

Despite all development and regression that guiding figure caused, it still depends on the figure which guiding figure guide whether he or she wants to accept the change from the guiding figure

B. Problem Formulation

After reading the novel, three problems to analyze are formulated

as follows:

1. What kind of person is Waver before meeting Rider and

participates in Holy Grail War?

2. What kind of character is Rider?

3. What kind of development happened to Waver’s character after

he meets Rider and survive the Holy Grail War?

C. Objectives of the Study Based on the questions above, the objectives of the study is to find

the importance of guiding figures, to determine the traits of guiding from Rider

and to find out how Rider can influence Waver to experience the development.

There are three objectives in this study. First is to examine what kind of person

is Waver is before meeting Rider and participating Holy Grail War. Second is

to examine what kind of character Rider is. Last is to find out what is the

importance of Rider as guiding figure in Waver’s character development which

is shown in his turning point.

7

D. Definition of Terms The first term to define is Guiding Figure. Guiding Figure or

Donor Character is a character that has a role to guide the guided character so

the guided character can either surpass the guiding figure, not repeat the

mistakes that guiding figure did in past or to become better or worse person

depending on the guiding figure characters (Propp, 1928, p.72).

The second term is Character Development. Character

Development is the portrayal of people in a work of fiction in such a way that

the reader or audience seems to learn more about them as they develop

(Collin’s Online Dictionary, 1999).

CHAPTER II REVIEW OF LITERATURE

This section consists of three parts of discussion. The first is the

review of related study done by other researcher. The studies contain

similarities that can be related with the thesis which the writer writes. The

second part is review of related theories. The theories in this part are the

theories used to support the thesis. The third is theoretical framework for this

study.

A. Review of Related Studies There are two studies in this research selected by the writer as they

can be used for writer thesis. The first one is Undergraduate thesis done by an

alumnus of Sanata Dharma University named Surya Pranata (2009). The thesis

is The Main Character’s Motivation of being a Samurai in Eiji Yoshikawa’s

Taiko. As written in thesis, the motivation of the main character is the focus of

the study as the main character was born as peasant and not born as samurai.

Although some Japanese are not born as Samurai they have chance to improve

their status. Surya also writes that peasants supposed to achieve status as

Samurai is harder than those who had been born so and as peasant and also as

peasant main character Hideyoshi was dreamt to change his life, to be seen as

equal and to serve his lord to unify all Japan which all were his dream in his

youth. The writer chooses this study because he can relate it with Waver

position as student in clock tower which shows his status as no one in world of

magic but can improve his status by achieving something or did a feat no one

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

9

could imagine which leads him to Holy Grail War and his encounter with Rider which will change his life. In Surya Pranata’s Undergraduate thesis there is theory about motivation written by Laming and the theory shows about how human action are reasonable as they do action for their needs. These theories what makes the study relatable to writer thesis which related to Waver motivation in Holy Grail War which can be served as his base character before the turning point in his life or development.

The second study is also an undergraduate thesis from Sanata Dharma written by Rengganis Hendryasari (2009) with title, The Effect of the Minor

Characters to the Development of Emma in Janne Austen’s Emma. The writer decides to take this as material especially in regard for guiding figure and guided figure in writer’s thesis. Though the study from Hendryasari is not mostly similar, the fact that the certain character’s character development affected by other people is still similar in writer’s topic for his thesis.

Especially since the writer write about character development, Hendryasari’s study will not miss about character development theory which involves the character’s personality in beginning of the story and character’s personality in the middle and after the turning point of the story and of course it did not change suddenly but step by step as ever stated by Laurence Perrine in the study.

10

B. Review of Related Theories In this part, Writer would like to present the relevant theories. The

theories are theories of character and characterization, theories of character

development and theories of comparison. These theories are useful because it

helps writer solve the problems in the thesis.

1. Theories of Character and Characterization

Since the writer involved in dealing character development problem,

the basic to solve problem is to understand what character is and needed to

understand the character well in this case as Waver shows quite problematic

and memorable character as one of Master involved in Holy Grail War and

Rider’s character which has unique charisma which makes people drawn and

like him.

There are two experts that the writer mentions in this thesis and first is

about character. The theory about character is provided by Hans P. Guth in his

book (1948, p.729) and the character can be understandable by reader

according to Hans P. Guth can be through:

 Outward Impression: this point often tells us about a character shown by

outer image like physical features, gestures, mannerism, clothing and voice.

However, this point can sometimes give us wrong impression.

 Dialogue: This point can become the clue to determine the character in the

story. Through this, we can learn about what the character think, feel and what

they say.

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

11

 Actions: Action speaks louder than words. Other way to understand someone is to see the action they made and it is relatable to decision the characters make in the story.

 Thoughts and feeling: writer often shares the reader what the character feels and think throughout the story. This is usually hidden to certain character but again to certain character and to certain event in story this will be exposed.

The second expert regarding the characterization comes from M.H

Abrams. In his book (1985, p.24), Abrams wrote that there are two method of characterization.

 Showing: this method can also be called as the dramatic method which makes the author shows the character talking, acting and leaves the reader to infer what motives behind the character’s action.

 Telling: this method makes author intervene authoritatively in order to describe and often evaluate the motive and dispositional qualities of characters.

2. Theories on Character Development

Writer’s thesis mainly spoke about character development and this theory of character development in this thesis is used to determine the development of characters in Fate/Zero. There are many types of characters in every literature like the normal one, gloomy, chivalric, void, arrogant, and many type of character in the novel. However, if it has to be divided, according to Colwell (1968, p.12), character development can be divided into two types.

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

12

 Round Character. This type is also called complex character by swinging to one aspect of his character to another that has been hinted at all along can develop without startling the reader. To conclude it, this is called ‘developing character’. The round character in literature mostly attached to main character or supporting characters can have a chance to develop themselves to become better. Waver Velvet is one of those round character to be mentioned by writer and another example of ‘developing character’ is Anakin Skywalker from Star

Wars Movie.

 Flat Character. According to Colwell, this type also called static character and the opposite of the type before which means this one did not develop.

However, despite the fact did not develop, flat character can develop depending on what kind of choice the character made. Flat character as seen in most literatures not developed and their characteristic are the same throughout the story. The story can also support the flat character depend on the situation to make sure the characteristic of flat character stay same throughout story.

Another example of flat but develop because of story is from Star Wars Trilogy

Darth Vader from episode IV until V he is considered most wicked villain but at the climax of the episode VI, he returns to his former self which save Luke

Skywalker from death by The Emperor.

Colwell also stated in his book how character can develop. The character can develop depending on how the involved character in story action and decision decide the result of his or her decision. The development can also

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

13

come from a viewpoint of the involved character how he or she see and feel about his or her surroundings. The example is Gulliver from Gulliver Travel where Gulliver develops satirist point view about human sin after involved with the small people in the story.

3. Theories of Personality Development

Fate/Zero character contains various personality and each of them quite interesting to be followed and Waver is one of them as he shows some development or change in his personality throughout the story and the writer will need theory regarding the personality development. This theory is taken from Elizabeth Hurlock’s book about Personality Development. Hurlock states that there are some conditions responsible for personality change which means personality can change if it meets these types of conditions. These are conditions that can change someone personality according to Hurlock.

 Changes in environment. Means changes in either the physical or social environment may produce changes in person self –concept and in turn, in his characteristic behavior (Hurlock 1974, p. 125). Relatable example would be

Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars Episode I, The Phantom Menace, where he is taken from his home planet to go on journey with Qui-Gon Jinn the jedi master and his comrade to save one planet from separatist which cause little Anakin to change his mindset from being worker in his home planet into Qui-Gon Jinn apprentice and has to be independent to stay alive in the midst of war against separatist.

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

14

 Strong Motivation. According to Hurlock, when motivation to improve the personality pattern is strong enough changes can be affected. Hurlock also gave an example regarding popular and unpopular person. A person who perceives himself/herself as popular will likely has less motivation to change because he is already satisfied and on the contrary with unpopular person who think himself as unpopular will have strong motivation to be popular (Hurlock 1974, p127). Take a look from Hideyoshi Toyotomi in Eiji Yoshikawa’s Taiko who want to raise his status from peasant into samurai through his competence and taken from thesis of Surya Pranata that talks about main character’s motivation shows that competence can become basic motivation to cause change.

 Changes in self-concept. According to Hurlock, self-concept is core of the personality pattern and as such determines the kind of adjustment person will make, a change in the self-concept will bring about a change in personality pattern. Changing one self-concept requires tremendous self-insight which means person must be able to see him as he actually is and not as he would like person to perceive him or her (Hurlock 1974, p. 128). In Ironman Tony Stark, the genius, billionaire, philanthropist, and playboy is a CEO of the weapon factory Stark Industries and as the director of the company he lead. He believes that the weapon he made is used to keep people safe but after his imprisonment by terrorist, he realized that the weapon he made is fall to the wrong hand and used to harm the innocent people which caused him to change inside especially after Yinsen, the person who helped Tony build Ironman suit Mk-I to escape terrorist camp died in front of him telling him to not waste his life. The

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

15

imprisonment from terrorist, the reality about his weapon and meeting with

Yinsen caused Tony to change his value inside and lead him to create suit of armor thus Tony is born as a superhero named Ironman.

 Physical Changes. According to Hurlock, this change may come from maturation and decline or from illness, organic and glandular disturbances, injuries or some other condition resulting from person’s life pattern but unrelated to normal changes in the body structures (Hurlock 1974, p. 124).

 Changes in significant people. According to Hurlock, when the significant people in individual’s life change and when he or she tries to adapt to his or her pattern of behavior and his attitudes, beliefs, values, and aspirations to theirs, changes in his or her personality pattern are inevitable (Hurlock 1974, p. 126).

 Changes in social pressures. This change happens because everyone normally has strong desire to be accepted by those who are significant to the subject of personality change. The subjects of change are traits that likely lead to social rejection like shyness, bossiness, aggressiveness and greed. Negative traits are often become subject of change in social pressure (Hurlock 1974, p.

126).

 Changes in roles. Role changes result in status change within the group.

The example of factor that causes role change is age. A child changes from being a dependent into being an independent person when he or she is old enough to earn wage. Other factor is economic in example like a sponsor of certain project must retire from his or her position when retirement or business reverses force him to count every single penny he or she spends (Hurlock 1974,

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

16

p. 127). This kind of change can be good but there also bad role change which can damage personality pattern. First is being prevented from making changes when one feel capable of doing so and when his or her peer permitted to do so.

Second is when individual are forced to play the role he or she does not want to play like women resent to give up career to play the role of mother and wife.

And the last is unprepared for the role change when he or she is needed to change can contribute to the personality damage.

C. Theoretical Framework The focus of this study is to analyze the development of certain character development when the certain character has guiding figure to nurture the guided character. The writer uses the source novel as the research material to learn about character’s personality before and after meeting with the guided character. The theories and studies exist to help the writer understand and analyze the novel, the characters and the interaction between the guide and the guided can lead toward development whether the development is regressing or progressing. The theory of characterization will be used to decide the characteristic of Waver and Rider to decide how their character can affect each other since characterization contains data regarding element of character in literature. Next the theory of personality development will be used for gaining and insight about the development of Waver Velvet’s character and to determine how Rider can affect greatly Waver personality so far until changing his initial bad personality until the turning point which turns him into better person in the end of the story.

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

17

This is done because the writer wants to show the importance of

someone to have some kind of teaching figure to guide them so they will not

do the mistake that the guide character did in his or her past or simply to make

the guided character to be better person or worst person depending on the

characteristic of guiding character. Also, the writer wishes to convey that

guiding figure is not always some kind of teacher but they can be found in your

surrounding like parent, best friend, figure of hero and figure of inspiration

whether the inspiration come from fiction or real fact of history.

CHAPTER III METHODOLOGY

A. Object of the Study The novel used for this study is entitled Fate/Zero, a Japanese novel written by Gen Urobuchi and illustrated by Takeuchi Takashi and published in 2006. The English translation was begun at 2007 by a couple of translators and all the volume was finished translated in 2011. The novel itself consists of four volumes and first volume was released in December 12, 2006 and published by Type-Moon. The novel also gets released as four sets of drama CD and later adapted into TV animation in 2011 by Studio .

The volumes that become object of study is volume one and volume four which can be considered two of four volume of Fate/zero. Volume one will serve as Waver Velvet base or prior character which noted him as narcissist spoiled brat who think he can do anything, volume two and three is serve as progress of Waver development and Rider’s guide to him. Lastly volume four is Waver’s turning point as he faces against Archer himself in word.

The Animation of Fate/Zero receives many positive reactions from viewers and on top of that some of review came from big shot like ANN

( News Network) and Kotaku. The animation also receives multiple awards from Newtype Anime Award based on soundtrack, animation, directors, commercial, theme song, and characters

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

19

B. Approach of the Study

The writer uses psychological approach taken by book written by

Rene Wellek and Austin Warren, Theory of Literature Third Edition.

According to Wellek, psychological approach is study of writer as type and as individual, or the study of the creative process, or the study of psychological types and laws present within work of literature or the effect of literature toward the reader (audience psychology) (Wellek 1956, p. 81). This method is applicable to analyze the character in the novel and answer the problem. The psychological approach is one of the methods that can be used to determine person’s characteristic and personality. This approach is defined as a method to determine person or character in literature based on what are inside them like ego, emotion or desire.

Elizabeth B. Hurlock in her book Personality Development stated that changes inside one did not occur on themselves and the change occurred because of multiple revisions in the thoughts and feelings related to the person point view. Hurlock also added there are variations of personality change and one of them is used by writer to know the character change in Waver after his meeting with Rider and as Hurlock stated in her book one of the variations caused the character change is caused by different kinds of people. People differ greatly in the degree of motivation they have to change their personalities. A person with satisfied with himself or herself as he or she is has little motivation to change (Hurlock 1974, p.123). This is related how Waver never satisfied to himself as he tries to proof himself that he is better than

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

20

anyone in his league which is very relatable to what Hurlock said and this

cause Rider attitude and word deeply absorbed to Waver causing personality

change to him.

C. Method of the Study This study used library research in searching related material for

the topic. In library research, the writer finds a physical material from book in

library and online material from internet. The main source for this study is

Japanese novel Fate/Zero by Gen Urobuchi. Other sources which to provide a

theory and base to explain the character development which experienced by

Waver Velvet during Holy Grail War with Rider which are: Personality

Development by Elizabeth B. Hurlock, Living Literature The Literary Heritage

by Hans P. Guth, A student’s Guide to Literature by C. Carter Colwell, and

Glossary of Literary Terms Fifth Edition by M. H Abrams.

To answer the problem formulations, the writer took some steps to

solve the problems. First, the writer read all of the volume of Fate/Zero to

understand the story and the development inside and this led the writer pin

point the early Waver personality and the turning point of Waver’s character

development. The second material mostly revolve around thesis theory and

topic where other material than main material come in play to get the data,

theory, argument, opinion revolving the novel itself like review from the

professional reviewer, article taken from other media like internet or magazine.

After the first and the second steps were done, the writer determined how Rider

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

21

could influence Waver character development which was from a spoiled brat into a better person with broader point of view in the end of Holy Grail War.

CHAPTER IV ANALYSIS

This chapter answers to the problems formulated in the first chapter. There are three parts in this analysis. The first part discusses the personality of Waver Velvet before he participated in the Holy Grail War and met Rider. His personality is based on his attitude and how he saw things before Holy Grail War is begin and before meeting Rider in the story. The second part determines what kind of person Rider is and the analysis is done by observing how he interacts with Waver as the story progresses. The last part is what becomes of Waver’s personality after the Holy Grail War and his meeting with Rider.

A. The Character of Waver Velvet before Participating in Holy Grail War

In Fate/Zero, Waver Velvet leaves an impression as a narcissist as he thinks to himself that he is the most capable person in Clock Tower and demands that everyone should respect him (Urobuchi, Vol.1, 2006, p.42).

Physically, Waver is just an average person with a height of 157 cm and with no distinctive physical traits. As a magus, he came from a family of magus with three generations lineage which is pale in comparison with normal magus family which makes him below average. However, the reason why Waver is a narcissist is because he has point of view that is different from other magus and his point of view is fundamentally a revolution in world of Magus. He

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

22

developed a concept that magus power can be increased through effort, knowledge and experience rather than increasing magical potential through genetic lineage. Although it is a revolutionary concept, the lecturer Kayneth

(Master of Lancer) dismissed the idea without second thought and lead a humiliation to Waver. This development eventually lead Waver to Holy Grail

War by stealing a relic that Kayneth, his mentor ordered for Holy Grail War and will actually lead his meeting with his fateful servant, Rider or known as

Alexander the Great as his true name.

From the beginning part of Fate/Zero, the writer is able to see some characteristics in Waver from his action and how he reacts toward what happened to him and come in several traits about Waver’s characters.

1. Self-Centered and Arrogant.

Waver gives an impression at the first part that he is superior compared to other

Clock Tower student and demand that everyone should respect him. According to Oxford Learner Dictionary, self-centered mean as tending to think about oneself and not thinking about the needs or other’s feeling. Proven from this part of the novel

“I am the most capable student of Clock Tower since its founding. Everyone would have to respect me.” At least, that was what Waver thought of himself (Urobuchi Vol.1, 2006, p.42).

This part shows how highly Waver think of himself compared to other student in the Clock Tower which proves arrogant is one of his characters in the beginning of the story. This part also proves Waver mindset that he thinks the

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

23

world revolves around him and he thinks that he is the right one compared to other. There is also matter of self-centered side of Waver and it is proven in this part.

“Oi, boy. Might you happen to be some great, excellent magus?” The response was so utterly unexpected that Waver could not take it as anything but a cynical insult. Snorting, he turned away. “This is not something great magi would do. It is the worst method among the worst. You—you’re making fun of me, huh?” (Urobuchi Vol.2, 2007, p. 216) This part shows how Waver is self-centered and this factor caused him unable to give credit to himself after he located Caster’s secret hideout. Self-centered only thinks about oneself thus he/she will fail to accept appreciation from other like Waver cannot accept Rider’s compliment.

2. Naïve.

It means lacking of experience or unknown to the reality surrounding the involved person and he/she is showing element of innocent toward reality of the world outside their comfort zone. This trait exist in Waver as he did not think a second time before he plunge himself into Holy Grail War only to earn recognition by winning in the Holy Grail War. This trait only exists until he realizes the terror of the War. The terror can be shown when he saw disfigured human and corpses in Caster’s hideout after he found it and realize that he is too naïve expecting good things from Holy Grail Wars and it is not easy as he thinks to seize the grail as he has to face the reality in front of his eyes.

None of the things here were the remains of a human body. Everything was a new creation, an art. The existences, the worth, the bodies of

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

24

human beings were discarded meaninglessly in the process of this art— such was the essence of the slaughter that took place here. Sheer murder—an act of creativity for one’s own amusement. This creation of art through death was more than Waver’s mind could possibly take. It was beyond simple emotions like horror and disgust. At such graphically realistic and alarming shock, Waver could not even stand straight; he was already on his hands and knees on the bloodstained floor before he realized, regurgitating the contents of his stomach (Urobuchi Vol.2, 2007, pp. 222-223).

The gruesome scene before Waver caused by Caster’s atrocities with his master caused Waver to vomit. Normal person will be disgusted through their heart because Caster’s workshop filled with dismembered children heads, hands, organ, legs, and everything that can be found in human body used as material to create artistic object like chair. In addition, Waver also see one kid still breathing but no longer has human function only to serve as material to create ‘art’.Waver’s reaction proved that he was naïve to think Holy Grail War is the same as magic practice but turns out it was not the same as practicing magic.

3. Motivated.

The trait of motivated come from someone who is motivated to do some change in his or her life. People with motivation are bound to change because motivation what drives person to change their life. For an example, when one person is called weak by other person, he or she is motivated to become stronger and set to surpass the person who called he or she weak. Waver gain this trait came after he is humiliated by Kayneth about his theory regarding talent of magus and cause him frustrated and angry. Later, when he is asked to deliver the relic of summoning servant to Kayneth, he hears about Holy Grail

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

25

War, he is motivated to seize the grail as the achievement seizing the grail is greater than graduating from Clock Tower and motivated to prove that he was right all along and make people acknowledge his talent and superiority.

Since he had the talent to be a lecturer, it was impossible for him not to comprehend Waver’s exceptional exposition. No, that man was probably jealous precisely because he understood. Afraid of Waver’s hidden talent, he had grown jealous, and treated Waver as a threat to his own position. That was probably why he responded in such a violent manner upon reading Waver’s exposition. Ripping an exposition of gathered wisdom; is this the attitude a scholar should assume?

Unforgivable. His world-shaking talent had been arbitrarily written off by a figure of authority; there was no justice. But not a single person sympathized with Waver’s frustration. The Magus Association was— from Waver’s point of view—already corrupt to the core (Urobuchi Vol.1, 2006, P. 45).

Frustration can become seed for doing something big or doing something beyond comprehension to fulfill someone objective. Most frustrated people are often annoyed because some reasons like defeat, humiliation, lost, and many other reasons that lead to create frustration in oneself. In Waver’s case his frustration came from humiliation. Waver’s concept are actually good and can be put into practice despite the method is deviating from traditional magus in the story, but Kayneth his lecturer is one of those traditional conservative magus who dislike new way thus Waver’s concept rejected and led to Waver frustration and which it leads to motivation to do something.

Waver immediately realized that it was a catalyst used to summon Servants in Heaven’s Feel. And thus, he received a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

He no longer had even a shred of love left for the corrupt Clock Tower. The glory of graduating as a valedictorian was mere chaff compared to the honor brought by Fuyuki’s Holy Grail. The moment of Waver

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

26

Velvet’s victory in the war would be the same moment when those insignificant members of the Magus Association grovel at his feet.

From that day on, Waver left England, heading for the island country in the Far East. Clock Tower immediately realized who had stolen Kayneth’s parcel, but did not chase after him. No one was aware of his interest in Heaven’s Feel (Urobuchi Vol.1, 2006, p.46).

This is the result of Waver led by his motivation to proof himself that he was right all along cause him to plunge himself into Holy Grail War and seize the grail for recognition he dreamt of.

4. Developing.

As the story progressed, he shows some development after meeting with Rider and involved in Holy Grail War fighting or works together with other servants.

The proof of the development showed by his attitude and how he is able to tolerate Rider’s recklessness, following him to the battle and in another occasion he showed his development and mature from brat into a true man. His growth is started with one compliment which marks his beginning of change.

“What are you talking about? Achieve good results using a poor method; isn’t that a much greater achievement than starting from better methods? You should be proud of yourself! As a Servant, I am proud as well.” Laughing boldly, Rider clapped the diminutive Master on the shoulder. Increasingly upset, Waver tried to retort, but realizing the uselessness of preaching the mysteries of magecraft to this Servant, he held his silence and shrugged off the matter (Urobuchi Vol. 2, 2007, P. 216, 217).

The compliment from Rider may become Waver’s first step to change as no one in clock tower praised him for what he did there. As the story progressed,

Waver interaction with Rider also increased and he realised that Rider may make fun of him and often smack his back but Rider also compliment him.

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

27

This also marks Waver’s development as he started to accept things like his inferiority, reality and Rider’s advices that prove to be useful for his future.

B. The Description of Rider Rider or known in real name as Alexander the Great is the servant of Waver Velvet. However, despite his role as Waver’s servant, one could describe their relationship as mentor and pupil or father and son relationship which surprised the reader. Physically Rider is a big person with height over two meters, has a muscular body with overbearing presence and a contrast to

Waver’s physical build (Urobuchi Vol.1, 2006, p. 96). The first impression when Rider appear in the story, he often takes Waver lightly in the story and creating a jokes on how small Waver’s ambition is and sometime misunderstands the purpose of Waver’s motivation in Holy Grail War to increase his height. However, despite Waver’s lack of ability, Rider still remains the same and sticks with Waver until his end by Archer’s hand.

Based on his attitude and his demeanor in Fate/Zero, the writer determines several traits in Rider’s characteristic in the novel from his action, how he reacts, his decision, and why he is considered as guiding figure to

Waver.

1. Anti-Nihilist and Expert

Nihilist according to Oxford Dictionary is known as someone who believes life is meaningless and rejects all religious and moral principles. Rider got this trait because he was willing to see the good and the bad of his ideal through the end.

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

28

As historical person, Rider or Alexander the Great had experienced a lot of things like victory, defeat, betrayal, death of companion, and many experience that historical figure in war could experience. However, despite all of those experiences, he still accepts the good and the bad of his life and wish for the

Holy Grail to get a human body. This is stated in these parts of the novel.

Unexpectedly Rider smiled rather shyly and he replied after a sip of wine: “I want to become human.” (Urobuchi Vol. 2, 2007, 255)

This part shows Rider ambition after returning to world not as a human but as a

Servant. This wish shows Rider characteristic that he is an anti-nihilist which able to see the bright side of life even after his kingdom fell into ruin. As an anti-nihilist, he accepts the result of the history which recorded his kingdom fell apart and filled with new ambition of conquest and to fulfill the ambition, he wants to be a human once again.

“Alexander, you… Your own empire—it became four separate warring factions that quickly disappeared to sands of history. Have you no regret at such an end? If you could redo it… you would want to save your motherland… don’t you think about that”

“No.” Raising himself to his full height, the King of Conquerors met ’s furious gaze with his own. “No, I do not. If my generals and I have acted to cause the eventual demise of my own nation, I will accept it as it is! Yes, I will grieve. Yes, I will shed tears. But I will not have a single regret!” (Urobuchi Vol. 2, 2007, 262).

From these parts above, it is decided that Rider is anti-nihilist that can see a bright side of his new life despite his kingdom historically led to ruin by his men. Rider did not regret his action during his lifetime as human in history, he sets a new ambition to start a new conquest if he manage to win the war and

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

29

gains the body human. This part also prove that Rider is a person with experience or expert due to his previous live as human involved with war in history. As an expert who lived in age of war, he is filled with a lot of experience during his life and these factors for being an expert and an anti- nihilist makes Rider qualified as guiding figure.

2. Hero

Shown during the fight between Lancer and Saber, Kayneth found out that it was Waver who stole Rider’s catalyst and begin to berate and torment Waver by calling him incompetent and that is where Rider step in the middle of the two. He proclaims despite Waver incompetence, he is brave enough to follow him in the midst of battle inside his chariot and told Kayneth that the real coward is actually Kayneth who hid in the shadow and refuse to show himself.

This trait can be attached on rider because hero commonly described as someone who defends the weak.

Something enfolded the slender, lone shoulders of the boy shivering from terror, in a gentle, powerful embrace. Waver was befuddled by the rough yet gentle touch. The hand of the stalwart Servant, coarse fingers thick with calluses, previously only induced dread from the short Master.

“Oi, magus. If I am not mistaken, you were supposed to be my Master instead of this kid.”

Rider called out to the unseen Master, whose face was covered, twisted by a huge smile of malevolent pity.

“Ridiculous! A man who deserves to be my Master should be a warrior who rides with me into the battlefield, not a coward who does not even dare to show his face.”

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

30

Silence descended; only the anger of the unseen Master could be felt spreading across the night’s air. Rider suddenly laughed into the empty sky, a roaring laugh that exhausted the air in his lungs (Urobuchi vol.1, 2006, p. 245).

The action of Rider in the first paragraph was to calm Waver who is struck by terror from his teacher Kayneth. One of traits that element of hero has is gentle side shown at the paragraph which used by Rider to calm Waver from terror.

The next paragraph seen as Rider allied himself to Waver despite know the fact that Kayneth supposed to be his master instead of Waver. The xest paragraph shows another of hero element to help the weak one as Waver is not talented mage and just student of Clock Tower while Kayneth himself is instructor at

Clock Tower and experienced magic user. By bad-mouthing Kayneth and allied to Waver, it is clear that Rider has the traits of hero which is also the part of guiding figure.

3. Mentor and Friend

These traits exist within Rider as in the most of the story, Rider spend his time nurturing Waver’s growth to the point that he even considered Waver as his friend even though Waver used all of his command seals, the symbol of Holy

Grail Wars participant causing him lost the right as Rider’s Master.

“After going forth into battle with me so many times, why are you saying all this? You idiot.” The King of Conquerors poked fun at the youth’s tears like one at a bantering banquet. He slapped his thin, weak shoulders. “Aren’t you a real man who has faced enemies with me? That makes you a friend. Stick out your chest and stand shoulder to shoulder with me.” (Urobuchi Vol.4, 2007, p. 173).

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

31

This action proof that Rider thought Waver more than just a Master of Holy

Grail War and showed that Waver is more than just a Master of servant. Their relationship also improved further.

4. Static

This trait sticks with Rider because from the beginning until the end of the story, Rider remained to his ideal and not affected by anything despite many conflicts happened in the story. For a guiding figure, this quite important because as someone who guide must have strong conviction to nurture the growth of the guided one. Proved as Rider stay and stick with Waver until the bitter end.

“I don’t have my Command Seals anymore! I don’t want to be a Master anymore! Why do you still want to take me with you? I—” “Master or otherwise, you are my friend, and that will never change.” Waver knew that these words, spoken with the selfsame smile, were directed at him. In that instant, the hardest part of his heart crumbled— only a moment was required to destroy what he had protected all his life. (Urobuchi vol. 4, 2007, p. 173).

The part above prove that from beginning of the story to the point where that part happen, Rider’s character remain the same. In the beginning when he defend Waver from Kayneth’s torment until this point, he remains as Waver’s

Servant. Furthermore, despite Waver lost the command spells, the qualification of participant in Holy Grail War, that fact did not bother Rider at all as he declare that Waver is his friend no matter what. The part above clearly shows that Rider characteristics remain same throughout the story as Waver’s ally.

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

32

C. Waver’s Character Development in the Middle and After Holy Grail

War

Aftermath of the Holy Grail War, only few survived the war and it includes Waver as one of the three survivor. The story progressed and so bond between Waver and Rider also shown to become stronger as they fight other servant and this shows how important Rider as guiding figure toward Waver which shows their relationship instead of master and servant relationship their relationship more like father and son relationship, mentor and pupil relationship, friend-like relationship and King and retainer relationship which differ greatly from other masters relationship with their servant. How Rider affect Waver personality and his role as guiding figure are consist of:

1. Patient

Waver develop this characteristic after his interaction and his fight together with Rider. In beginning of story, Waver unable to stomach what Rider did to him especially when Rider drags Waver to any place without thinking his opinion and Rider’s impulse to decide whatever he thinks right and benefits

Waver and him. However as the story progressed he is understand Rider’s action in Holy Grail War because Rider in sense far more experienced than

Waver who still new to the war itself and shown in one of the story parts when

Rider decide to attack Caster base promptly after Waver manages to locate

Caster’s location.

“All right! Now that we have the location, it is my turn! Hey boy, do you plan to strike at once?”

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

33

“Hey, wait! The enemy is Caster. Attacking immediately may be a little stupid.”(Urobuchi, Vol.2, 2007, p.217)

This part shows conversation between Waver and Rider after they locate the location of Caster hideout. Logically when someone finds out enemy secret base they immediately send scout to spy the base in order to gain information is something common to do. Rider on the other hand decides to strike immediately which leads Waver to ask Rider’s reason.

“Look. In a war, the camp’s position changes every now andthen. If you’ve grasped their position but fail to strike immediately … If you let them slip past your fingers, it would be too late for regrets.” “… Why are you so fired up again today?” “Of course! My Master has finally shown some achievement which is likely to get us results. Bringing back the head of the enemy and repaying my master is my duty as a Servant.” Such amusing manner left Waver at a loss for an appropriate reply. As if taking that silence as consent, Rider laughed heartily, hit his Master’s slender shoulder and nodded. “Don’t give up at such a beginning. For the time being, let’s just try to strike them. We might pull this off unexpectedly!” (Urobuchi Vol.2, 2007, pp. 217-218).

After dragged many times by Rider, Waver bit by bit able to be patient of

Rider’s characteristic and consented about his plan to strike enemy base immediately. This shows how Waver grows to understand someone intention toward him and of course to be patient because of Rider’s personality.

2. Caring

This trait is build inside Waver after battle between all servants against

Caster’s monster that gone wild. Due to his inexperience and low supply of energy as magus, cause Rider unable to manifest physically forcing him in his

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

34

spiritual state to conserve Rider’s energy. Spiritual state is conditions where servant is present beside master side but they are not appear physically and in this state they are unable to fight. Furthermore with his low energy he cannot supply Rider with his energy immediately like other master and has to be patient until Rider gains enough energy to materialize. This caused Waver has to go camping in a place where he summoned Rider for the first time so Rider can recover fast because Rider’s trump card that consumes a lot of energy. If this Waver is the initial Waver, he will be dense and unable to understand

Rider condition after unleashing his trump card but the Waver here is someone who had undergone process. How Waver care about Rider can be seen from this part.

“Your trump card was surprisingly prana-hungry, wasn’t it?” “Not at all, but its size grew bigger. Those army guys weren’t summoned, so it did not cost too much prana to maintain.” “Liar. Magecraft of that degree needs an enormous amount of prana just to be activated. Once activated, the army summoned within was a pretty surprising expenditure for you, wasn’t it?” “…” “When I first saw it, I really did think it was a very efficient Noble Phantasm, just like you said. In retrospect, the amount of prana you took from my Magic Circuits when you first fought Assassin was really too small.” That was when Waver had misunderstood the amount of prana required for Ionioi Hetairoi. Even magecraft must obey the greater rule of equivalent exchange. Activating large magecraft of that degree was definitely not easy. Waver could not help but feel angry once again at his own naivete. The excessive intake of energy drinks made Waver nauseous, and his chest felt like it was on fire. Waver sat up on the thermal mat, took off his boots, and dived into his sleeping bag. “Rider, why did you use your own stored prana instead of mine? It is my duty to provide it. And you made that decision twice in a row without consulting me. Just what are you trying to do?” “As for … that.” Rider sighed deeply; it was difficult to explain.

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

35

“As a Servant, I am purely a killer of souls. If I had involved you when I released all of my prana, it could have threatened your life.” (Urobuchi Vol. 4, 2007, pp. 52-53)

Element of caring is shown when person is able to point something out of order. In Waver’s case he manages to understand the energy usage of Rider trump card and finally understand that Rider has force himself to not use

Waver energy which can cause death to Waver. Further prove can be shown after Rider tells Waver his story of conquest that ends up in fail because some of Rider subordinate unable to trust his dream and his failure to prove that world is globe. Despite that, Waver says that despite what had happened to

Rider, Waver still his master and he want to stick with Rider until bitter end.

“I’m tired of others sacrificing themselves because of my whims. If I can ascertain that the Grail indeed exists somewhere, then I will obtain it even if it means your life and mine … but unfortunately, we still don’t know whether the Holy Grail really exists. I don’t want to make the same mistake, a mistake like not knowing the world is a globe.” “But I … even so, I’m still your Master.” Waver wanted to argue, but he immediately mocked himself in his heart. He could not even provide prana, which should have been the least he could do. He could not even detect the weakness of his Servant, who pushed himself to participate in battle. (Urobuchi Vol. 4, 2007, p. 55).

Waver conversation with Rider and his frustration toward his inability to support Rider prove that Waver grows to care about his surrounding and self- centered persona almost completely gone. The feeling of frustration is happen when someone is unable to do something when they should do something. But the feeling of frustration is also prove of someone is actually care about something. This is also mark halfway of Rider guidance in progress so Waver can be better person.

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

36

3. Tolerant

Bit by bit and as story progress almost at the end, this characteristic is build inside Waver. Tolerant element is when someone can be patient toward something, know the situation and finally going with the flow of event happened right now whether the event is bad or good. Waver grows to tolerate his Servant way of thinking right after his conversation regarding the trump card energy usage and his strategy of winning the war. Despite not understand

Rider intention of challenging Saber might be meaningless, he give up on what his servant think and understand Rider’s personality is still same like when he is summoned first time. After thinking a bit, Waver agree and go with Rider’s plan to face Saber first before archer despite know that might be meaningless.

Though Waver had a hard time understanding his intentions, he understood his feelings as King of Conquerors, this guy who was willing to let even the War of the Holy Grail go. As a Master, distracting thoughts were best discarded—in fact, Waver did not even have the optimism to wish for someone else to finish off Saber. The Servant called Saber was truly too powerful. That mysterious golden Servant, Archer, was also a mighty competitor; Waver thought him very shrewd, and it was nearly impossible that Saber would damage him before Rider fought her. For Rider, a face-to-face confrontation with Saber was more or less inevitable. “… Never mind, if that’s how you want it to be … fine …” Waver wanted to argue a bit more, but realized that nothing would change no matter what he said, so he gave up. Feeling so tired that he could not fend off sleep, he tucked himself into his brand new sleeping bag, feeling the warmth of the down quilt. .” (Urobuchi Vol. 4, 2007, pp. 57-58).

Tolerant is a characteristic when someone shows a willingness to allow something when he/she doesn’t actually have to agree with that something. In

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

37

this case Waver able to tolerate Rider’s impulsive decision when he even doesn’t understand what Rider think at all. Even though challenging Saber in late game can actually be fatal for the next fight against Archer as their next opponent. Rider’s decision may reckless and bears no fruit at all in next battle but Waver still going along with it. This proves that Waver actually grows to some degree where he agrees with Rider decision. another note, Waver can actually stays silent when rider propose something reckless once again when fighting Saber and did not complain like he usually did in beginning of the story.

“Hmph, she dares to challenge me, one who possesses the mighty title of Rider.” Rider gave off a ferocious smile as if satisfied. “Haha, this is so interesting. Since she’s caught up with us, we don’t need to go into that weird forest anymore … I’ll have one heck of a good fight with her.” Rider grasped the divine bulls’ reins and suddenly slowed the war chariot’s speed. “Hey, are we landing?!” “I changed my mind. I have decided to battle that little girl of ordinary wheels. There’s still a long way to go to get through the forest in front of us, right? This will be the most ideal battleground!” Waver originally wanted to complain about giving away their advantage of height and falling into Saber’s trap. However, Waver remembered the power of Excalibur he had seen the day before yesterday. From the characteristics exhibited by Saber’s Noble Phantasm, the further away they were from her, the more dangerous it would get. It would probably be safer to have a close-range melee battle that could limit the destructive power of the enemy’s Noble Phantasm. “All right, that’s decided then. You should be careful!” “Hahaha! Kid, you’ve finally understood the exquisite taste of battle. Don’t worry! Nothing in heaven and on earth can hinder me in my path!” (Urobuchi Vol. 4, 2007, p. 90).

Waver shows a degree of toleration toward Rider decision again in this part.

Waver about to complain to Rider about his reckless method but remembering recent event that brought Rider and him to fight against Saber this time, he

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

38

decide to keep silent about complaining Rider and go with Rider’s plan.

Hearing this actually make Rider happy that Waver finally understands part of his intention and goes along with it. Tolerating reckless decision and Rider’s impulsive decision shows how Waver actually grows as person and master.

4. Courageous and Dignified

This new characteristic developed after through many deadly battles against many strong servants, unpredictable masters, unknown things like Caster’s sea monster, and Rider reckless decision. Waver is pure in the world of Holy Grail

War that requires blood, effort, determination, and especially talent to survive the event where not everyone can survive event filled unknown aspect.

However, Waver’s courage is not only in a fight between master and servant because he has to face his own battle when Waver is revealed not the grandson of the old couple. The old couple already appeared in the beginning of the story but their appearance is not major until the volume four of Fate/Zero when the old man from the couple is know that Waver is not actually his grandson.

What injured Waver more than the awkwardness and the sense of crisis was the feeling of humiliation. “Say, Waver, you aren’t our grandson, right?” The subliminal hint had been removed—moreover, by a gentle old man with no training in magecraft. “I—” “Mmm, who are you? It doesn’t matter. It’s incredible that Martha and I actually believed you were our grandson. But even after living for so long, I’ve found that some incredible things in this world remain incredible no matter how hard you think about them … Your usual behavior was gentler than our grandson’s, anyway.” “… Aren’t you angry?” Waver asked in a small voice. Old man Glen said with a complex but calm expression.

“As for that … of course I’m angry. But Martha smiles all the time now; that used to be impossible. I should thank you for that. Also, you don’t seem to harbor any ill intent. Straightforward youths like you and that man Alex are so hard to find these days. As to why you deceived us … I couldn’t understand it even if I wanted to.” (Urobuchi Vol. 4, 2007, p. 144).

The interaction between Waver and the old man named Glen shows that Waver bear a guilt and humiliation from deceiving the old couple. Even someone needs to muster a lot of courage when they admit a lie and try to be honest.

Waver at that time had no choice but to ask whether the old man is angry or not and on the contrary to what Waver expect, the old man did angry but when he sees through Waver and his wife is also happy he cast aside such feeling and accept Waver like their true grandson despite he and his wife hypnotized by

Waver through magic. After being revealed that Waver is not the old couple actual grandson, the next event is finally showdown against Archer. Before facing Archer, Waver is no longer Rider Master but nonetheless Rider still drags Waver to watch his match against Archer. The aftermath of the battle between Rider and Archer end up with Rider’s defeat and left Waver alone against Archer with no servant and lack of talent as magus. Although Waver faces the possibly strongest opponent in his life, the experience with Rider as figure to him lead Waver toward the turning point of his life. The courage he built after through harsh battle of Holy Grail War and Waver new quality finally appeared when he faces Archer.

The golden Archer, gazing at Waver with his brutal blood-colored eyes, slowly walked up to him. He must not avert his eyes. His entire body was frozen with terror, but he understood that one thing. He would not survive if he averted his eyes now; shaking with unconcealed fear, he

stubbornly refused to avert his eyes. Archer, standing before him, posed a question in a voice completely devoid of emotion. “Boy, are you Rider’s Master?” He had thought it impossible to speak with a throat frozen by terror, but at this question he was released from his stiffness for a short moment. Waver shook his head, and replied in a hoarse voice. “No. I’m—his servant.” “Hmn?” Archer narrowed his eyes, looking Waver over in his entirety, and finally noticed the absence of the Command Seals. “—I see. But, boy, if you truly are a loyal subject, you have a duty to take revenge for your deceased King, do you not?” (Urobuchi Vol. 4, 2007, p. 218).

Standing against Archer is almost impossible especially from youth like Waver who know nothing about Holy Grail War but Waver in that scene muster all courage he has and he answers Archer question with hoarse voice. If Waver averts his eye from Archer he will definitely killed immediately by Archer but

Waver muster all of his courage to face Archer. Archer after asked one question he asks another question to Waver whether he is able to avenge

Rider’s death but Waver’s answer surprises Archer.

Even with the second question, Waver answered with a strangely calm heart. “… If I challenge you, I would die.” “Of course.” “I can’t do that. I was ordered to live.” Yes, he could not die. Not now, when the last words entrusted to him by the King were engraved into his heart. Waver must escape from this dilemma at any cost. He was before an enemy Servant with no way to defend himself. Though it was a desperate, helpless situation, the one thing he definitely could not do was give up. He could not ignore the way he had made the oath. And that was perhaps a pain far more cruel than resigning himself to death. The boy shook helplessly before the death he could not escape from, but his gaze alone made his adamancy known. Looking down wordlessly on that diminutive stature for a short while, Gilgamesh simply nodded once. “The path of devotion is a great labor. Never mar it.” He had no reason to raise his hand against a mongrel who was neither Master nor traitor. That was his decision as the king. (Urobuchi Vol. 4, 2007, pp. 218-219).

Waver’s answer came from the oath he made with Rider to live and because

Archer sees Waver’s adamancy from his gaze and determination to live, Archer decides to spare Waver as he impressed with Waver’s courage and has no reason to kill someone who is no longer involved with Holy Grail War. With

Archer decision to spare Waver’s life, his real journey starts now as he finally passes his turning point. With the end of the Holy Grail War, Waver’s turning point and his survival, Rider’s guiding role to Waver finally come to an end celebrating the birth of new man.

CHAPTER V CONCLUSION

From the analysis conducted on the novel, this study is able to answer three problems mentioned in previous chapter. First of all, Waver initial personality is often related to immature person who know nothing and has yet to experience something outside the comfort zone. Waver initial personality displays someone immature who has yet to know how harsh the reality of the world and that is applied to common person in reality. Based on the writer analysis, Waver is an immature brat and initially lack of knowledge how the world work but at the same time he is a developing character but lack of guidance and need someone to guide him to know what he should really do just like children need a parent, most people in this world need someone to guide them so they find their purpose to live in this world. The writer analysis on Waver proves that some people need right person to guide the lost person.

Second, judging from Rider characteristics, he is total contrast to

Waver. While Waver is short person, lack of power and oblivious to his ability, Rider is big and tall person, filled with masculinity of every man wants and experienced as he is person of the past who return to live through power of Holy Grail. From the second conclusion, it is proofed that to change someone, same person with the same view is unneeded in change because same type person tend to conservative and to change you need someone who is different in point view, how he or she sees things, person with experience in real life, and someone who is adored as great person in real life. Through these

analyses Rider meets all criteria for Waver’s development. Rider is big and tall, filled with experience and knows how harsh the world, he sees bigger vision and filled with bigger ambition for future, and wise enough to nurture

Waver’s growth whose traits are total contrast to him.

Lastly, the writer state how important is guiding figure in life taken from how Rider can cause great change in Waver’s personality. The third conclusion the writer wants to show how Rider can affect Waver’s personality and how he can transform Waver into dignified person in his turning point. It is safe to say that guiding figures played critical role in almost everyone life and they play big role for the guided future.
