This delightful comedy by Laurence Schwab and B. G. DeSylva with Music by Ray Henderson, Lyrics by B. G. DeSylva and Lew Brown, was later revived and rewritten to star Alice Faye, John Payne and Stubby Kaye in a special road show version. The score had several hit songs including "Varsity Drag," "The Best Things in Life Are Free," "Lucky In Love," and the title song. ROBERT GIBBS (Curly) This is Bob's fifth show with WVLO, his third "on stage." In productions of "Rose Marie" and "South Pacific," he played leading roles, then became Choral Director for "Camelot," and made headlines for our last production, "Brigadoon." This time he combines his vocal talents and directing abilities by acting both 'on stage' as Curly and "in the pit" as Musical Director. He has performed in "Oklahoma!" before as well as a number of other appear- ances with the King Family, Hayward Symphony and "The Overtures" and "Footliters." We hope to see more of Bob in the future both on and off the stage. ROBERT P BERGMAN *(Curly) This Bob makes his debut with our Association and brings a long list of theatrical credits; among them leading roles in "West Side Story," "Irene," "1776," "Damn Yankees," "Oliver," "HMS Pinafore," "Anything Goes," "Annie Get Your Gun," and several others. He recently graduated from the University of Santa Clara's Law School and in addition to his legal profes- sion has aspirations of directing in the future. VIVIAN C. ALBRECHT (Laurey) A resident of Half Moon Bay, Vivian is also making her debut with this production. She has an extensive background in theater including por- trayals of Laurey, Julie Jordon in "Carousel," Hodel in "Fiddler on the Roof" and Annie Sullivan in "Miracle Worker." Vivian studied directing at USC and has directed both musicals and dramas. She is studying voice at the Peninsula Conservatory of Music and still manages time for her hus- band and two children. We are happy to have Vivian commute so far to share her talents with us. MICHELLE D. FERCHAU*(Laurey) A newcomer to our stage, Michelle is quite a veteran in theater. She began her career at 14 in the title role of "Gypsy" and has since been seen in leading roles in "Robin Hood," "Anything Goes," "Bye, Bye Birdie," and "Godspell." She sang with a 10-piece jazz group, "Mainsqueeze," for four years and has been married "... for 2'/2 wonderful years to a trumpet player named Charlie." She is involved in various Church activities in her spare time. HOWARD GRAY (Will Parker) A Freshman in Combined Sciences at the University of Santa Clara, Howard is taking time to make his debut with WVLO in this production. He has appeared in "Oklahoma" before as well as leading roles in "Music Man," "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown," and "Harvey." He loves music, has been playing the piano for 12years and even though he plans to attend Med School, he will stay involved with theater in some way. We will always be glad to have Howard's energy and talent in our productions. DEE DEE BROWN (Ado Annie) You may not have seen Dee Dee on stage in "My Fair Lady," but you saw her creative talents on stage in the costumes which later won her an award. Even though she has worked with us before, this does mark her debut as a performer.

First, I would like to thank Mari Yoshihara for her guidance and mentorship in many capacities throughout my graduate career. She challenged me to think deeply and critically about music and storytelling. • Music in GUNSMOKE Half-Hour Seasons (Bernard Herrmann, Jerry Goldsmith, Fred Steiner Etc)
Music in GUNSMOKE Half-Hour Seasons (Bernard Herrmann, Jerry Goldsmith, Fred Steiner etc) PART I [End of Season 2 thru End of Season Five] NOTE: Unless otherwise indicated as another composer, music is by Bernard Herrmann. While I will specifically focus on Herrmann's music, I will nevertheless concentrate on the music of other composers later in the series. It was not until Season Five that original scores were commissioned for the series, starting with "Brother Whelp" (airdate November 7, 1959) by Paul Dunlap. Up to then only CBS Music Library so-called "stock music" was used. http://www.filmscorerundowns.net/other/cbs_collection.pdf As I wrote in my paper on the CBS Collection (see blue link immediately above), much of the music in the early seasons was largely a collection of mood titles or other descriptive names. The music editor(s) would then insert the music as he saw fit. Principal composers then first were Lucien Moraweck (such as CBS cue #312 "Tension on the Trail" muted horn at 21 seconds), Rene Garriguenc, Fred Steiner, Jerry Goldsmith and others, soon followed by early 1957 with Bernard Herrmann. The various suites Herrmann composed (summer 1957) such as Police Force cues, so-called Climax and Indian Suite and Western Saga (etc) did not really begin until the Fall 1957-Spring 1958 season (CBS Library VIII). This would equate in Gunsmoke with its third season. I have no information available that I could find regarding what music was used in Season One of Gunsmoke. Officially the CBS Music Library for television did not really establish itself until the 2nd season (CBS Library VII, 1967-1957 season).

  • 'The Dick Van Dyke Show' Opera | Arts and Music
ʻThe Dick Van Dyke Showʼ Opera By ADAM SCHWARTZ Posted January 17, 2011 Consider the sources of operas. There have been operas based on plays, novels, poems, original librettos, short stories, historical events, the Bible, myths, and goodness knows what else. Now, from a Harvard-trained composer and librettist who plays violin for the New York City Opera orchestra, comes whatʼs likely the first opera based on a TV situation comedy. This September saw the premiere of The Life and Love of Joe Coogan, a one-act chamber opera based on an episode of the same name from the 1960s sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show. The opera was given two performances at Lehigh University, where the composer Paul Salerni is a professor of music as well as the the NEH Distinguished Chair in the Humanities. The performances took place at the Zoellner Arts Center; Salerni conducted the Monocacy Chamber Orchestra. Twentieth Century Commedia DellʼArte The opera came into being when Salerni needed a companion piece for his one-act opera, Tony Carusoʼs Final Broadcast, which—with a libretto by poet Dana Gioia—won the 2007 National Opera Association Chamber Opera Competition. One evening Salerni and his wife, theater director Laura Johnson, were watching a DVD of The Dick Van Dyke Show, which he describes as his favorite TV series: “Iʼve probably seen every episode twenty times and know most of them by heart.” As they watched the show, Johnson told him, “Boy, you need to do something like this. This would be a great companion piece.” “She thought the nature of the episode itself and the showʼs wonderful comic writing would lend itself to an opera,” Salerni recalls, “and she was right.” Explains Johnson, “Thereʼs a wonderful tradition in opera of commedia-based pieces—comic opera, opera buffa—that works off of commedia dellʼarte.
